This commit adds some missing symbols and other minor enhancements.
In particular, it establishes the term 'channel' as a synonym for
a BIO object attached to a trace category, and introduces the
concept of a 'simple' channel versus a 'callback' channel.

Provide a number of functions to allow parameters to be set and
retrieved in a type safe manner. Functions are provided for many
integral types plus double, BIGNUM, UTF8 strings and OCTET strings.
All of the integer functions will widen the parameter data as
required. This permits a degree of malleability in the parameter
definition. For example a type can be changed from a thirty two bit
integer to a sixty four bit one without changing application code.
Only four and eight byte integral sizes are supported here.
A pair of real functions are available for doubles.
A pair of functions is available for BIGNUMs. These accept any sized
unsigned integer input and convert to/from a BIGNUM.
For each OCTET and UTF8 strings, four functions are defined. This
provide get and set functionality for string and for pointers to
strings. The latter avoiding copies but have other inherent risks.
Finally, some utility macros and functions are defined to allow
OSSL_PARAM definition arrays to be specified in a simple manner.
There are two macro and one function for most types. The exception
being BIGNUM, for which there is one macro and one function.

Adding a provider means creating an internal provier object and adding
it to the store. This allows the addition of built in providers, be it
in the OpenSSL libraries or in any application.
"Loading" a provider is defined broadly. A built in provider is already
"loaded" in essence and only needs activating, while a provider in a
dynamically loadable module requires actually loading the module itself.
In this API, "loading" a provider does both.

The idea is that the application shall be able to register output
channels or callbacks to print tracing output as it sees fit.
OpenSSL internals, on the other hand, want to print thoses texts using
normal printing routines, such as BIO_printf() or BIO_dump() through
well defined BIOs.
When the application registers callbacks, the tracing functionality
sets up an internal BIO that simply forwards received text to the
appropriate application provided callback.

A CAdES Basic Electronic Signature (CAdES-BES) contains, among other
specifications, a collection of Signing Certificate reference attributes,
stored in the signedData ether as ESS signing-certificate or as
ESS signing-certificate-v2. These are described in detail in Section 5.7.2
of RFC 5126 - CMS Advanced Electronic Signatures (CAdES).
This patch adds support for adding ESS signing-certificate[-v2] attributes
to CMS signedData. Although it implements only a small part of the RFC, it
is sufficient many cases to enable the `openssl cms` app to create signatures
which comply with legal requirements of some European States (e.g Italy).

Add platform::VMS, which is a generic VMS module. Additional modules
to support specific building aspects (such as specific compilers) may
be added later, but since we currently work on file names and those
are generic enough, this is also enough.
This reworks Configurations/descrip.mms.tmpl to work out product names
in platform::VMS terms. Something to be noted is that the new
functionality ignores the *_extension config attributes, as they were
never used. VMS is very consistent in its use of extensions, so there
is no reason to believe much will change in this respect.

This is the start of a major work to correct some quirks in the
buiding system. The base for this is to move certain attributes that
lack desired flexibility from Configurations/*.conf to perl modules
that can be selected with one single attribute in the config targets.
The way this is meant to work is by adding this attribute in select
config targets:
perl_module => 'Name'; # Name to be replaced
Then, in the perl scripts or modules that need the functionality,
these lines should be added:
use lib catdir($srcdir, 'Configurations'); # Ensure access to platform.pm
use lib $blddir; # Ensure access to configdata.pm

1. In addition to overriding the default application name,
one can now also override the configuration file name
and flags passed to CONF_modules_load_file().
2. By default we still keep going when configuration file
processing fails. But, applications that want to be strict
about initialization errors can now make explicit flag
choices via non-null OPENSSL_INIT_SETTINGS that omit the
CONF_MFLAGS_IGNORE_RETURN_CODES flag (which had so far been
both undocumented and unused).
3. In OPENSSL_init_ssl() do not request OPENSSL_INIT_LOAD_CONFIG
if the options already include OPENSSL_INIT_NO_LOAD_CONFIG.
4. Don't set up atexit() handlers when called with INIT_BASE_ONLY.

Previously, the API version limit was indicated with a numeric version
number. This was "natural" in the pre-3.0.0 because the version was
this simple number.
With 3.0.0, the version is divided into three separate numbers, and
it's only the major number that counts, but we still need to be able
to support pre-3.0.0 version limits.
Therefore, we allow OPENSSL_API_COMPAT to be defined with a pre-3.0.0
style numeric version number or with a simple major number, i.e. can
be defined like this for any application:
-D OPENSSL_API_COMPAT=0x10100000L
-D OPENSSL_API_COMPAT=3
Since the pre-3.0.0 numerical version numbers are high, it's easy to
distinguish between a simple major number and a pre-3.0.0 numerical
version number and to thereby support both forms at the same time.
Internally, we define the following macros depending on the value of
OPENSSL_API_COMPAT:
OPENSSL_API_0_9_8
OPENSSL_API_1_0_0
OPENSSL_API_1_1_0
OPENSSL_API_3
They indicate that functions marked for deprecation in the
corresponding major release shall not be built if defined.

We're strictly use version numbers of the form MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH.
Letter releases are things of days past.
The most central change is that we now express the version number with
three macros, one for each part of the version number:
OPENSSL_VERSION_MAJOR
OPENSSL_VERSION_MINOR
OPENSSL_VERSION_PATCH
We also provide two additional macros to express pre-release and build
metadata information (also specified in semantic versioning):
OPENSSL_VERSION_PRE_RELEASE

To get the library's idea of all those values, we introduce the

Since recently, OpenSSL tarballs are produced with 'make tar' rather
than 'make dist', as the latter has turned out to be more troublesome
than useful.
The next step to look at is why we would need to configure at all to
produce a Makefile just to produce a tarball. After all, the tarball
should now only contain source files that are present even without
configuring.
Furthermore, the current method for producing tarballs is a bit
complex, and can be greatly simplified with the right tools. Since we
have everything versioned with git, we might as well use the tool that
comes with it.
Added: util/mktar.sh, a simple script to produce OpenSSL tarballs. It
takes the options --name to modify the prefix of the distribution, and
--tarfile tp modify the tarball file name specifically.
This also adds a few entries in .gitattributes to specify files that
should never end up in a distribution tarball.

When libssl and libcrypto are compiled on Linux with "-rpath", but
not "--enable-new-dtags", the RPATH takes precedence over
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and we end up running with the wrong libraries.
This is resolved by using full (or at least relative, rather than
just the filename to be found on LD_LIBRARY_PATH) paths to the
shared objects.

We currently implement EVP MAC methods as EVP_PKEY methods. This
change creates a separate EVP API for MACs, to replace the current
EVP_PKEY ones.
A note about this EVP API and how it interfaces with underlying MAC
implementations:
Other EVP APIs pass the EVP API context down to implementations, and
it can be observed that the implementations use the pointer to their
own private data almost exclusively. The EVP_MAC API deviates from
that pattern by passing the pointer to the implementation's private
data directly, and thereby deny the implementations access to the
EVP_MAC context structure. This change is made to provide a clearer
separation between the EVP library itself and the implementations of
its supported algorithm classes.

OpenSSL::ParseC is a module that parses through a C header file and
returns a list with information on what it found. Currently, the
information it returns covers function and variable declarations,

The generation of linker scripts was badly balanced, as all sorts of
platform dependent stuff went into the top build.info, when that part
should really be made as simply and generic as possible.
Therefore, we move a lot of the "magic" to the build files templates,
since they are the place for platform dependent things. What remains
is to parametrize just enough in the build.info file to generate the
linker scripts correctly for each associated library.
"linker script" is a term usually reserved for certain Unix linkers.
However, we only use them to say what symbols should be exported, so
we use the term loosely for all platforms. The internal extension is
'.ld', and is changed by the build file templates as appropriate for
each target platform.
Note that this adds extra meaning to the value of the shared_target
attribute.

BIO_s_log() is declared for everyone, so should return NULL when not
actually implemented. Also, it had explicit platform limitations in
util/mkdef.pl that didn't correspond to what was actually in code.

CRYPTO_atomic_read was added with intention to read statistics counters,
but readings are effectively indistinguishable from regular load (even
in non-lock-free case). This is because you can get out-dated value in

It seems that nmake first tries to run executables on its own, and
only pass commands to cmd if that fails. That means it's possible to
have nmake run something like 'echo.exe' when the builtin 'echo'
command was expected, which might give us unexpected results.
To get around this, we create our own echoing script and call it
explicitly from the nmake makefile.

Previoulsy we just had max_early_data which controlled both the value of
max early_data that we advertise in tickets *and* the amount of early_data
that we are willing to receive from clients. This doesn't work too well in
the case where we want to reduce a previously advertised max_early_data
value. In that case clients with old, stale tickets may attempt to send us
more early data than we are willing to receive. Instead of rejecting the
early data we abort the connection if that happens.
To avoid this we introduce a new "recv_max_early_data" value. The old
max_early_data becomes the value that is advertised in tickets while
recv_max_early_data is the maximum we will tolerate from clients.

This allows operation inside a chroot environment without having the
random device present.
A new call, RAND_keep_random_devices_open(), has been introduced that can
be used to control file descriptor use by the random seed sources. Some
seed sources maintain open file descriptors by default, which allows
such sources to operate in a chroot(2) jail without the associated device
nodes being available.

OpenSSL 1.1.0 made the X509_LOOKUP_METHOD structure opaque, so
applications that were previously able to define a custom lookup method
are not able to be ported.
This commit adds getters and setters for each of the current fields of
X509_LOOKUP_METHOD, along with getters and setters on several associated
opaque types (such as X509_LOOKUP and X509_OBJECT).

In commit 6decf9436f, fourteen public symbols were removed from
util/libcrypto.num on the master branch and the following symbols
renumbered. Unfortunately, the symbols `OCSP_resp_get0_signer` and
`X509_get0_authority_key_id` were not adjusted accordingly on the
OpenSSL_1_1_0-stable branch. This commit fixes the collision by
doing a 'double swap'.

The scrypt and RSA-PSS documents were a mixture of section 3 and
section 7 material. With pre-1.1.1 OpenSSL, this is understandable,
since we had a different directory layout. With 1.1.1, we've moved to
the typical man-page directory layout, and the documents need to be
updated accordingly.
Also, the scrypt document contained a description of
EVP_PKEY_CTX_set1_pbe_pass(), which is a generic function rather than
an scrypt specific function, and therefore should be documented
separately.

Original logic was "if no records found *or* last one is truncated, then
leave complete records in queue." Trouble is that if we don't pass on
complete records and get complete packet in opposite direction, then
queued records will go back to sender. In other words complete records

The GOST engine needs to be loaded before we initialise libssl. Otherwise
the GOST ciphersuites are not enabled. However the SSL conf module must
be loaded before we initialise libcrypto. Otherwise we will fail to read
the SSL config from a config file properly.
Another problem is that an application may make use of both libcrypto and
libssl. If it performs libcrypto stuff first and OPENSSL_init_crypto()
is called and loads a config file it will fail if that config file has
any libssl stuff in it.
This commit separates out the loading of the SSL conf module from the
interpretation of its contents. The loading piece doesn't know anything
about SSL so this can be moved to libcrypto. The interpretation of what it
means remains in libssl. This means we can load the SSL conf data before
libssl is there and interpret it when it later becomes available.

By asking for port 0, you get a free port dynamically assigned by OS.
TLSProxy::Proxy now asks for 0 and asks s_server to do the same. The
s_server's port is reported in "ACCEPT" line, which TLSProxy::Proxy
parses and uses.
Because the server port is now a random affair in TLSProxy::Proxy,
it's no longer possible to change it with the method 'server_port',
and it has become an accessor only. For the sake of orthogonality, so
has the method 'server_addr'.
Remove all fork calls on Windows, as fork is not to be trusted there.
This naturally minimized amount of fork calls on POSIX systems, to 1.
Sink s_server's output to 'perl -ne print' which ensures that output
is written strictly in lines. This keeps TAP parser happy.
Improve synchronization in -naccept +n cases by establishing next
connection to s_server *after* s_client finishes instead of before it
starts.
Improve error handling and clean up some methods.

requires that the shared library it runs against matches what it was
built for. test/recipes/test_cipherlist.t is made to refuse running
unless library version and build version match.
This adds a helper program test/versions.c, that simply displays the

It seems that only gcc -MMD produces dependency files that are "sane"
for our needs. For all other methods, some post processing is needed:
- 'makedepend' (Unix) insists that object files are located in the
same spot as the source file.
- 'cl /Zs /showIncludes' (Visual C) has "Note: including file: " where
we'd like to see the object.
- 'CC/DECC' (VMS) insists that the object file is located in the
current directory, i.e. it strips away all directory information.
So far, we've managed this (except for the VMS case) with individual
uncommented perl command lines directly in the build file template.
We're now collecting these diverse hacks into one perl script that
takes an argument to tell what kind of input to expect and that
massages whatever it gets on STDIN and outputs the result on STDOUT.

With the current mechanism, old cipher strings that used to work in 1.1.0,
may inadvertently disable all TLSv1.3 ciphersuites causing connections to
fail. This is confusing for users.
In reality TLSv1.3 are quite different to older ciphers. They are much
simpler and there are only a small number of them so, arguably, they don't
need the same level of control that the older ciphers have.
This change splits the configuration of TLSv1.3 ciphers from older ones.
By default the TLSv1.3 ciphers are on, so you cannot inadvertently disable
them through your existing config.

makes it very cumbersome to change the reseeding (time) intervals for
those instances. This commit provides a function to set the default
values for all subsequently created DRBG instances.

Add functions that will do the work of assigning certificate, privatekey
and chain certs to an SSL or SSL_CTX. If no privatekey is given, use the
publickey. This will permit the keys to pass validation for both ECDSA
and RSA. If a private key has already been set for the certificate, it
is discarded. A real private key can be set later.
This is an all-or-nothing setting of these parameters. Unlike the
SSL/SSL_CTX_use_certificate() and SSL/SSL_CTX_use_PrivateKey() functions,
the existing cert or privatekey is not modified (i.e. parameters copied).
This permits the existing cert/privatekey to be replaced.
It replaces the sequence of:
* SSL_use_certificate()
* SSL_use_privatekey()
* SSL_set1_chain()
And may actually be faster, as multiple checks are consolidated.
The private key can be NULL, if so an ENGINE module needs to contain the
actual private key that is to be used.
Note that ECDH (using the certificate's ECDSA key) ciphers do not work
without the private key being present, based on how the private key is
used in ECDH. ECDH does not offer PFS; ECDHE ciphers should be used instead.

When the proxy re-encrypted a TLSv1.3 record it was adding a spurious
byte onto the end. This commit removes that.
The "extra" byte was intended to be the inner content type of the record.
However, TLSProxy was actually adding the original encrypted data into the
record (which already has the inner content type in it) and then adding
the spurious additional content type byte on the end (and adjusting the
record length accordingly).
It is interesting to look at why this didn't cause a failure:
The receiving peer first attempts to decrypt the data. Because this is
TLSProxy we always use a GCM based ciphersuite with a 16 byte tag. When
we decrypt this it actually gets diverted to the ossltest engine. All this
does is go through the motions of encrypting/decrypting but just passes
back the original data. Crucially it will never fail because of a bad tag!
The receiving party thinks the spurious additional byte is part of the
tag and the ossltest engine ignores it.
This means the data that gets passed back to the record layer still has
an additional spurious byte on it - but because the 16 byte tag has been
removed, this is actually the first byte of the original tag. Again
because we are using ossltest engine we aren't actually creating "real"
tags - we only ever emit 16, 0 bytes for the tag. So the spurious
additional byte always has the value 0. The TLSv1.3 spec says that records
can have additional 0 bytes on the end of them - this is "padding". So the
record layer interprets this 0 byte as padding and strips it off to end up
with the originally transmitted record data - which it can now process
successfully.

In PR #5295 it was decided that the locking api should remain private
and used only inside libcrypto. However, the locking functions were added
back to `libcrypto.num` by `mkdef.pl`, because the function prototypes
were still listed in `internal/rand.h`. (This header contains functions
which are internal, but shared between libcrypto and libssl.)
This commit moves the prototypes to `rand_lcl.h` and changes the names
to lowercase, following the convention therein. It also corrects an
outdated documenting comment.

This commit adds three new accessors to the internal DRBG lock
int RAND_DRBG_lock(RAND_DRBG *drbg)
int RAND_DRBG_unlock(RAND_DRBG *drbg)
int RAND_DRBG_enable_locking(RAND_DRBG *drbg)
The three shared DRBGs are intended to be used concurrently, so they
have locking enabled by default. It is the callers responsibility to
guard access to the shared DRBGs by calls to RAND_DRBG_lock() and
RAND_DRBG_unlock().
All other DRBG instances don't have locking enabled by default, because
they are intendended to be used by a single thread. If it is desired,
locking can be enabled by using RAND_DRBG_enable_locking().

This script kept its own database of disablable algorithms, which is a
maintenance problem, as it's not always perfectly in sync with what
Configure does. However, we do have all the data in configdata.pm,
produced by Configure, so let's use that instead.
Also, make sure to parse the *err.h header files, as they contain
function declarations that might not be present elsewhere.

DTLS and TLS behave ever-so-slightly differently. So, when DTLS1.3 is
implemented, it's PHA support state machine may need to be different.
Add a TODO and a #error
Update handshake context to deal with PHA.
The handshake context for TLSv1.3 post-handshake auth is up through the
ClientFinish message, plus the CertificateRequest message. Subsequent
Certificate, CertificateVerify, and Finish messages are based on this
handshake context (not the Certificate message per se, but it's included
after the hash). KeyUpdate, NewSessionTicket, and prior Certificate
Request messages are not included in post-handshake authentication.
After the ClientFinished message is processed, save off the digest state
for future post-handshake authentication. When post-handshake auth occurs,
copy over the saved handshake context into the "main" handshake digest.
This effectively discards the any KeyUpdate or NewSessionTicket messages
and any prior post-handshake authentication.
This, of course, assumes that the ID-22 did not mean to include any
previous post-handshake authentication into the new handshake transcript.
This is implied by section 4.4.1 that lists messages only up to the
first ClientFinished.

The reason to do this is that some output might start with an 'ok',
which TAP catches and takes for TAP output. The TAP compatible way is
to make all output it shouldn't catch look like comments.
We do this by setting the environment variable HARNESS_OSSL_PREFIX
during tests. When that is set, apps/openssl uses BIO_f_linebuffer
and sets its prefix to the content of that environment variable.

But there were some intervening commits that made neither revert apply
cleanly, so instead do it all as one shot.
The crypto global locks were an attempt to cope with the awkward
POSIX semantics for pthread_atfork(); its documentation (the "RATIONALE"
section) indicates that the expected usage is to have the prefork handler
lock all "global" locks, and the parent and child handlers release those
locks, to ensure that forking happens with a consistent (lock) state.
However, the set of functions available in the child process is limited
to async-signal-safe functions, and pthread_mutex_unlock() is not on
the list of async-signal-safe functions! The only synchronization
primitives that are async-signal-safe are the semaphore primitives,
which are not really appropriate for general-purpose usage.
However, the state consistency problem that the global locks were
attempting to solve is not actually a serious problem, particularly for
OpenSSL. That is, we can consider four cases of forking application
that might use OpenSSL:
(1) Single-threaded, does not call into OpenSSL in the child (e.g.,
the child calls exec() immediately)
For this class of process, no locking is needed at all, since there is
only ever a single thread of execution and the only reentrancy is due to
signal handlers (which are themselves limited to async-signal-safe
operation and should not be doing much work at all).
(2) Single-threaded, calls into OpenSSL after fork()
The application must ensure that it does not fork() with an unexpected
lock held (that is, one that would get unlocked in the parent but
accidentally remain locked in the child and cause deadlock). Since
OpenSSL does not expose any of its internal locks to the application
and the application is single-threaded, the OpenSSL internal locks
will be unlocked for the fork(), and the state will be consistent.
(OpenSSL will need to reseed its PRNG in the child, but that is
an orthogonal issue.) If the application makes use of locks from
libcrypto, proper handling for those locks is the responsibility of
the application, as for any other locking primitive that is available
for application programming.
(3) Multi-threaded, does not call into OpenSSL after fork()
As for (1), the OpenSSL state is only relevant in the parent, so
no particular fork()-related handling is needed. The internal locks
are relevant, but there is no interaction with the child to consider.
(4) Multi-threaded, calls into OpenSSL after fork()
This is the case where the pthread_atfork() hooks to ensure that all
global locks are in a known state across fork() would come into play,
per the above discussion. However, these "calls into OpenSSL after
fork()" are still subject to the restriction to async-signal-safe
functions. Since OpenSSL uses all sorts of locking and libc functions
that are not on the list of safe functions (e.g., malloc()), this
case is not currently usable and is unlikely to ever be usable,
independently of the locking situation. So, there is no need to
go through contortions to attempt to support this case in the one small
area of locking interaction with fork().
In light of the above analysis (thanks @davidben and @achernya), go
back to the simpler implementation that does not need to distinguish
"library-global" locks or to have complicated atfork handling for locks.

Add a -rsigopt option to the ocsp command that allows signature parameters to be provided for the signing of OCSP responses. The parameters that may be provided to -rsigopt are the same as may be provided to -sigopt in the ca, req, and x509 commands.
This PR also defines a OCSP_basic_sign_ctx() function, which functions in the same way as OCSP_basic_sign(), except that it accepts a EVP_MD_CTX rather than a key and digest. The OCSP_basic_sign_ctx() function is used to implement the -rsigopt option in the ocsp command.

On Windows, we sometimes see a behavior with SO_REUSEADDR where there
remains lingering listening sockets on the same address and port as a
newly created one.
To avoid this scenario, we don't create a new proxy port for each new
client run. Instead, we create one proxy socket when the proxy object
is created, and close it when destroying that object.

On Windows, it seems that doing so in a forked (pseudo-)process
sometimes affects the parent, and thereby hides all the results that
are supposed to be seen by the running test framework (the "ok" and
"not ok" lines).
It turns out that our redirection isn't necessary, as the test
framework seems to swallow it all in non-verbose mode anyway.
It's possible that we did need this at some point, but the framework
has undergone some refinement since then...

A third shared DRBG is added, the so called master DRBG. Its sole purpose
is to reseed the two other shared DRBGs, the public and the private DRBG.
The randomness for the master DRBG is either pulled from the os entropy
sources, or added by the application using the RAND_add() call.
The master DRBG reseeds itself automatically after a given number of generate
requests, but can also be reseeded using RAND_seed() or RAND_add().
A reseeding of the master DRBG is automatically propagated to the public
and private DRBG. This construction fixes the problem, that up to now
the randomness provided by RAND_add() was added only to the public and
not to the private DRBG.

one, but it must additionally include supported_versions. The version

Because this also includes handling all sorts of non-object files when
linking a program, shared library or DSO, this also includes allowing
general recognition of files such as .res files (compiled from .rc
files), or .def / .map / .opt files (for export and possibly
versioning of public symbols only).
This does mean that there's a tangible change for all build file
templates: they must now recognise and handle the `.o` extension,
which is used internally to recognise object files internally. This
extension was removed by common.tmpl before this change, but would
mean that the platform specific templates wouldn't know if "foo.map"
was originally "foo.map.o" (i.e. an object file in its own right) or
"foo.map" (an export definition file that should be treated as such,
not as an object file).
For the sake of simplifying things, we also modify util/mkdef.pl to
produce .def (Windows) and .opt (VMS) files that don't need additional
hackery.

This small change in the Unix template and shared library build
scripts enables building "variant" shared libraries. A "variant"
shared library has a non-default SONAME, and non default symbol
versions. This makes it possible to build (say) an OpenSSL 1.1.0
library that can coexist without conflict in the same process address
space as the system's default OpenSSL library which may be OpenSSL
1.0.2.
Such "variant" shared libraries make it possible to link applications
against a custom OpenSSL library installed in /opt/openssl/1.1 or
similar location, and not risk conflict with an indirectly loaded
OpenSSL runtime that is required by some other dependency.
Variant shared libraries have been fully tested under Linux, and
build successfully on MacOS/X producing variant DYLD names. MacOS/X
Darwin has no symbol versioning, but has a non-flat library namespace.
Variant libraries may therefore support multiple OpenSSL libraries
in the same address space also with MacOS/X, despite lack of symbol
versions, but this has not been verified.
Variant shared libraries are optional and off by default.

Normally TLSProxy waits for the s_server process to finish before
continuing. However in cases where serverconnects > 1 we need to keep the
s_server process around for a later test so we continue immediately. This
means that TAP test output can end up being printed to stdout at the same
time as s_server is printing stuff. This confuses the test runner and can
cause spurious test failures. This commit introduces a small delay in cases
where serverconnects > 1 in order to give s_server enough time to finish
what it was doing before we continue to the next test.

Reseeding is handled very differently by the classic RAND_METHOD API
and the new RAND_DRBG api. These differences led to some problems when
the new RAND_DRBG was made the default OpenSSL RNG. In particular,
RAND_add() did not work as expected anymore. These issues are discussed
on the thread '[openssl-dev] Plea for a new public OpenSSL RNG API'
and in Pull Request #4328. This commit fixes the mentioned issues,
introducing the following changes:
- Replace the fixed size RAND_BYTES_BUFFER by a new RAND_POOL API which
facilitates collecting entropy by the get_entropy() callback.
- Don't use RAND_poll()/RAND_add() for collecting entropy from the
get_entropy() callback anymore. Instead, replace RAND_poll() by
RAND_POOL_acquire_entropy().
- Add a new function rand_drbg_restart() which tries to get the DRBG
in an instantiated state by all means, regardless of the current
state (uninstantiated, error, ...) the DRBG is in. If the caller
provides entropy or additional input, it will be used for reseeding.
- Restore the original documented behaviour of RAND_add() and RAND_poll()
(namely to reseed the DRBG immediately) by a new implementation based
on rand_drbg_restart().
- Add automatic error recovery from temporary failures of the entropy

This allows the caller to guarantee that there is sufficient space for a
number of insertions without reallocation.
The expansion ratio when reallocating the array is reduced to 1.5 rather than 2.
Change bounds testing to use a single size rather than both INT_MAX and
SIZE_MAX. This simplifies some of the tests.
Switch the stack pointers to data from char * to void *

OpenSSL 1.1.0 made SSL_CTX and SSL structs opaque and introduced a new
API to set the minimum and maximum protocol version for SSL_CTX with
TLS_method(). Add getters to introspect the configured versions:
int SSL_CTX_get_min_proto_version(SSL_CTX *ctx);
int SSL_CTX_get_max_proto_version(SSL_CTX *ctx);
int SSL_get_min_proto_version(SSL *ssl);
int SSL_get_max_proto_version(SSL *ssl);
NOTE: The getters do not resolv the version in case when the minimum or
maxium version are configured as '0' (meaning auto-select lowest and
highst version number).

A new method is added to EVP_PKEY_METH as:
int (*check) (EVP_PKEY_CTX *ctx);
and to EVP_PKEY_ASN1_METHOD as:
int (*pkey_check) (EVP_PKEY_CTX *ctx);
This is used to check the validity of a specific key.
The order of calls is:
EVP_PKEY_check -> pmeth.check -> ameth.pkey_check.

When parsing the header files, mkdef.pl didn't clear the line
terminator properly. In most cases, this didn't matter, but there
were moments when this caused parsing errors (such as CRLFs in certain
cases).

The one creating the DRBG should instantiate it, it's there that we
know which parameters we should use to instantiate it.
This splits the rand init in two parts to avoid a deadlock
because when the global drbg is created it wands to call
rand_add on the global rand method.

With the introduction of RAND_poll_ex(), the `RAND_add()` calls were
replaced by meaningless cb(...). This commit changes the 'cb(...)'
calls back to 'rand_add(...)' calls by changing the signature as follows:
-int RAND_poll_ex(RAND_poll_fn cb, void *arg);
+int RAND_poll_ex(RAND_poll_cb rand_add, void *arg);
Changed the function typedef name to 'RAND_poll_cb' to emphasize the fact
that the function type represents a callback function.
