Look for WORDS_LITTLEENDIAN instead of the gcc-specific __BYTE_ORDER.
Use our existing "compiler.h" portability layer.
Make functions which are not exported static.

Fixes Visual C++ 2010 breakage in recently added Codeview 8 code;
these are C99 features which were not necessary to introduce.

This implementation was written by Colin Plumb and
is in the public domain.
I've updated it to use stdint.h and the standard C types rather than
sys/types.h for portability.
