d7a89d6c7b [svn-r18818] Bug fix:
Fixed a bug in the H5DSdetach_scale function when 0 bytes
were allocated after the last reference to a dim. scale
was removed from the list of references in a VL element of the
DIMENSION_LIST attribute; modified the function to comply
with the Spec: DIMENSION_LIST attribute is deleted now when no
     dimension scales left attached.

Platforms tested: jam with electric fence, amani amd linew

CFLAGS overhaul

Description:

Modified the way configure handles CFLAGS.

(note: all changes also apply to FCFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, CPPFLAGS, and LDFLAGS).

    1. The configure process will now always preserve a user's CFLAGS
environment variable setup. Any additional flags necessary for compilation
added at configure time will be passed into the Makefiles as AM_CFLAGS,
which is an automake construct to be used in addition to CFLAGS.

This will allow a user to have the final say, as CFLAGS will always appear
later in the compile line than AM_CFLAGS. Additionally, setting CFLAGS
during make will no longer completely erase all flags set by configure,
    since they're maintained in AM_CFLAGS.

    2. Additionally, where possible, flags previously being assigned directly
into CFLAGS (and thus propagating into h5cc) have now been redirected into
H5_CFLAGS, so they're used ONLY for compiling hdf5, and not embedded into
the h5cc wrapper script as well.

*Note that H5_CFLAGS ultimately is assigned into AM_CFLAGS for use in the
Makefiles. Complete description of changes and build process will be
included in a Configure Document that Elena and I are working on.

    3. Removed unsupported config files. This includes:

       config/dec-osf*
       config/hpux11.00
       config/irix5.x
       config/powerpc-ibm-aix4.x
       config/rs6000-ibm-aix5.x
       config/unicos*

     4. Modified configure summary to display additional values. Specifically,
appropriate AM_* variables are being shown, as well as H5_FCFLAGS and
H5_CXXFLAGS, which were for some reason not already present.

Tested:

    - H5committest
    - Tested on all THG / NCSA machines, using several combinations of the more
prominent configure options (c++, fortran, szip, threadsafe, parallel,
et cetera). (Thanks to Quincey for rysnc testing setup!)
    - With regards to new automated testing, anything *necessary* for
compilation will be caught by the daily tests as it stands now. (i.e.,
if LDFLAGS is not properly set when szip is used, linking will fail).
Additionally, with regards to which flags get into h5cc, if any
*necessary* flags have been improperly removed, then daily tests should
fail during make installcheck. Additional machine-specific desired
behaviors and/or checks may have to be set up separately within the
daily tests, so this is something to work on.

98f6b609ad [svn-r17566] Fix for Bug 1562. H5DSis_attached needed to account for platform dependent types. Added test and test files for LE and BE dimension scales. Reworked part of test_ds file as part of debug.
Added missing H5Tclose in region reference routines.
H5DS.c checked for other locations which need to account for platform dependent types in dealing with ds_list_t. Added generator program for test files of LE and BE dimension scales.

Tested: local linux, h5committest

f098d20ab9 [svn-r16847] Description:
Bring r16846 from revise_chunks branch back to trunk:

Fix broken (for how long?) H5_ASSIGN_OVERFLOW macro to actually detect
overflows during assignments, along with several errors it [now] detected.

Cleaned up a fix minor warnings and/or pieces of code also.

Tested on:
FreeBSD/32 6.3 (duty) in debug mode
(h5committest not needed - multi-platform test performed on branch)

14c697f7e4 [svn-r12792] Fixed a Makefile.am to clean up a test file generated by the Packet Table
compression test.

Tested that the file is removed on juniper and heping.

Running reconfigure also regenerated the H5E* files (I think this means
somebody updated these files but didn't run reconfigure).

6aeb73dd44 [svn-r12686] Added compression to Packet Tables. Now both C and C++ packet tables
have an extra parameter that sets the deflate filter.

Added tests, made examples use the new APIs.

Cleaned up include files a little and removed some casts that I hope are
superfluous. If anybody encounters strange errors in the packet table
tests where the chunk size is set to some extremely large value, please
let me know, but I was unable to reproduce this error on any system.

Tested on mir, heping, sol, juniper, VS 6.0. Looked for the chunk size
error on several other systems a month or two ago.

e75a185eca [svn-r11185] Purpose:
Makefile feature

Description:
'make check-clean' now cleans *.h5 files created by tests as well as
.log and .chkexe files.

Solution:
check-clean is now a separate target in its own right, which cleans less
than mostlyclean (check-clean < mostlyclean < clean < distclean).

Platforms tested:
mir, heping, modi4 (serial and parallel)

43f091f462 [svn-r11008] Purpose:
Feature: tests now use parallel make and only run once

Description:
When make is invoked in parallel (using the -j option), several tests will
now be run simultaneously. This should speed up testing on a number of
systems.
When a test passes, it creates a foo.chkexe or foo.chksh file, which prevents
the test from running again unless the test or library changes.

Solution:
Most of the changes live in config/conclude.am. Added *.chkexe and *.chksh
files to the list of files to be cleaned at "make mostlyclean" time.
Parallel tests still run one at a time, but use the same make instructions
as serial tests.

Platforms tested:
mir, eirene, sleipnir, pommier, copper, modi4 (some errors occurred, probably
due to the test being run before updating hdf5. Will re-run tests after
checkin.)

349ca8daa9 [svn-r10234] Purpose:
Added Packet Table to high-level APIs

Description:
The Packet Table is an API that allows the user to append records
("packets") to a table, and read the back again. It supports
fixed-length records with a defined datatype and variable-length
records. It also supports a "current record" index to track the
user's position in the table.

Solution:
The Packet Table code lives in hl/src, and its tests in hl/test.
Some code is shared between the H5TB table and the H5PT Packet Table
in the form of functions in H5HL_private.c.
Some documentation exists for a previous version of the API. Updated
documentation and C++ wrapper API coming soon.

643e9a38bd [svn-r10062] Purpose:
Bug fix

Description:
Discovered two small bugs.
When MAKE is defined as the empty string, a test in configure incorrectly
identifies it as pmake. Skipped this test if $MAKE is the empty string.
Two .h5 files produced by a test in the hl directory were not cleaned.
Updated the Makefile.am.

Description:
Parallel builds were breaking in tools/lib

Solution:
talign didn't realize it depended on libh5tools.la because its
