The current tables controlling the fraction of tests skipped as a function
of express test level is a guess at what will be needed. It will be necessary
to tune this table against the express test targets and our worst case system.
Initially commit tested on Jam, Koala, and Heiwa, but ran into an unrelated
failure on Heiwa (bug reported). Replaced Heiws with Linew and got a clean
h5commit test.
Also tested parallel on Koala. Initially got very bad results (test timed out
roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the way through). Discussed matters with Matthew, and moved
the build to the solid state drive on Koala. This dealt with the performance
issues completely.
Ran bin/reconfigure to update the Makefile.in in directories not part of the fortran directory check=in. Updates Makefile.in due to changes made in configure.in for the Fortran 2003 additions.
Tested on all platforms run under daily tests.
Purpose:
Remove H5_MPI_SPECIAL_COLLECTIVE_IO_WORKS and
H5_MPI_COMPLEX_DERIVED_DATATYPE_WORKS #defines from source.
Description:
Two advanced parallel functionalities, special collective IO and
complex derived datatypes, are not supported by older
implementations of mpi, and thus our code limits the use of these
features with #ifdefs and has checks in configure to set them (or
not). Unfortunately, configure can't actually run a parallel check
to see if these features are working (nor not) so it resorts to
looking in the config files where they are explicity enabled or
disabled based on versions of mpi, sytems being built on, or for
no documented reason at all (i.e. just set to on or off as some
'default'). Overriding these settings is easy if need be, provided
it is known that it needs to be done to get improved performance,
and oftentimes it is not.
Most new MPI implementations successfully handle the functionality
requested when these #defines are set, and many of the "turn these
features off" cases in the config files are for old (> 5 years)
versions of MPI and retired systems (such as NCSA's tungsten).
Therefore, the decision has been made to remove the support for
these old versions of MPI and systems that cannot handle these
behaviors. The #ifdefs and supporting setup in the config/ files
and configure script has been removed, and the code executed when
these options were not set removed from the source.
In passing, this commit also cleans up some whitespace issues in
both t_mpi.c and H5Dmpio.c. Furthermore, in t_mpi.c, the special
collective IO test was not getting regularly run due to it being
written to work only with four processes (we regularly test with
six, previously with three), and thus it failed when actually run
due to an out of bounds data buffer assignment. It has been
modified to run at any number of processes greater than four, and
the memory problem has been fixed so the test passes.

General shared library improvements for CYGWIN / AIX
Description:
Shared libraries are disabled on both CYGWIN and AIX due
to inability to build them correctly. Part of the problem
in both of these situations is the lack of the libtool
flag -no-undefined, which tells libtool that all needed
symbols are defined at link time (a requirement on these
systems) and that it's okay to build shared libraries.
Another problem are lack of dependencies between wrapper
libraries and core C HDF5 library.
This patch addresses both of these by fixing configure to
add in -no-undefined flag for libtool during linking and
adds automake dependencies in the Makefile.am files.
After testing, both CYGWIN and AIX now generate shared
libraries, but there are still some test failures in each.
(cache_api, dt_arith, and testerror.sh on CYGWIN, and
fortran tests on AIX).
Even though the shared libraries are not quite perfect,
this is a general improvement to what we had before, so
I'm applying the patch anyways. Note that default behavior
of shared libraries on these systems being disabled has
NOT been changed and requires the use of the
--enable-unsupported to attempt to build them.
We will need to address the test failures in each
architecture prior to formally supporting shared
libraries on each.

Add "silent make" mode configure option.
Description:
Automake 1.11 has a new option available that allows for a
silent make mode. This functionality needs to be explicitly
enabled in configure.in via the use of the automake macro
AM_SILENT_RULES, which is what this commit is adding.
This introduces a new configure option:
--{en|dis}able-silent-rules
This option is on by default, and simplies compile and link
line outputs when building the library. Disabling this option
will print full "verbose" output (i.e., full compile and
linking lines for each target).

Description:
Shared Fortran libraries are not supported on Mac, but were being
disabled by configure in a way that also forced the C libraries
to be static-only. This has been fixed, so now only shared Fortran
is disabled while shared C can remain.
This prompted two additional changes:
1. While working on the check that addresses whether or not
shared Fortran libraries are allowed, removed old and no
longer needed check(s) that disable shared Fortran
libraries with HP, Intel 8, PGI, and Absoft compilers.
(Essentially, Mac is the only situation in which Fortran
shared are disabled by configure.)
2. Having two different states of libraries (i.e. shared C
library with static-only Fortran library) was not apparent
in the configure summary, which labeled all libraries as
either shared and/or static. I've added lines to both the
C++ and Fortran output sections to list shared/static-ness
of these libraries specifically.
Additionally, I've made sure that the new --enable-unsupported
configure option correctly overrides configure if it tries to
disable a shared library.

This continues the previous work and this one breaks the
checker_board_hyperslab_dr_pio_test() into 4 smaller
sub-tests.
Tested: h5committest plus jam serial.
The shape same tests ran too long. Break them into smaller subtests
so that they can finish sub-test in a shorter time. Easier to tell
which one sub-test is taking too much time and/or errors occur in
one fo the sub-tests.
This one breaks the contig_hyperslab_dr_pio_test() into 4 smaller
sub-tests.
Tested: h5committest
error and wanted to exit the test program. This was not good since if only a
subset of processes called MPI_Finalize(), the other processes will likely
hang. That happened in AIX that it would waited till the alarm signal to kill
the processes. Definitely a waste of time.
Solution: Changed it to call MPI_Abort.
That showed another problem. HDF5 has setup atexit post-process to try to close
unclose objects, release resources, etc. But if the MPI processes have
encountered an error and has been aborted, it is not likely any more MPI calls
can function properly. E.g., it would attempt to free some communicators in
the HDF5 MPIO file handle. It would again hang.
Solution: need to call H5dont_atexit() to disable any atexit post-processing.
This must be done early, like before calling H5open. This is added to each
parallel test main program.

not find t_shapesame in daily test. Turned out the mpiexec launcher is
working like real shell and the daily test signon (hdftest) does not have
"." in its $PATH. So, it could not automatically look for executables in
the current directory.
Solution:
Change the executable to an explicit ./t_shapesame. Now mpiexec can "find"
it.
Tested by hand in Amani.
Moved the two shape same tests from testphdf5 to a separated executables,
named t_shapesame. The shape same tests runs too long for testphdf5.
In a separated executalbe, it will be easier to separate any errors in
testphdf5 sub-tests from the shape same tests.
t_shapesame.c:
Contains the shape same tests (cloned from t_rank_projection.c) plus
a duplicate of "testphdf5.c" for now. After verifying it is correct, more
cleanup is needed.

Checked in fix for failure in shape same tests that appeared after
Quincy's recent massage of the test code. The problem was a race
condition created when Quincey re-worked the code selecting either
collective or independant I/O.
Previously, when independant I/O was selected in the test, I had
used H5Pset_dxpl_mpio() and H5Pset_dxpl_mpio_collective_opt() to
select collective semantics with independant I/O going on under
the hood. Quincey modified this to call H5Pset_dxpl_mpio() when
collective I/O was selected, and do nothing in the independant I/O
case. As a result, processes were able to race ahead and
modify the initial values of the data set before some processes
had verified that the initialization was correct.
Solved the problem by adding barriers, and making all barriers
dependant on independant I/O being selected.
Tested parallel on amani and phoenix. h5committested.
Note that parallel on amani and h5committest on heiwa failed
several times before I got a clean pass without code changes.
The failures on amani seemed to be time outs caused by contention
for the machine -- worryingly, they occurred in the shape same
tests. However, given subsequent passes and passes on jam and
phoenix, I am going ahead with the commit.
The failure on heiwa was in the fheap test. I don't see how
this can be related to changes in testpar, and in any case, it
went away on the second try.
Correct tests to use native datatypes consistently, and also to use
"normal" methods for performing collective I/O. Also, minor cleanups for
zeroing out buffers, etc.

metadata confusion test that appeared after Albert modified the test.
Cursory commit test. No test on Abe as that system is down, the
fix is very minor, and it seems to work in the 1.8.6 branch
John Mainzer fixed the bug and added a test which wrote file and flush a few
time; close the file then open it by serial and read simple structure. I
changed the test to two parallel running parts of ..._writer and ..._reader
and have the reader verify the file after every flush by the writer.
Tested: parallel in Jam and Amani.
Replaced calls to H5Dcreate() and H5Acreate() with calls to H5Dcreate2()
and H5Acreate2() respectively in t_mdset.c.
This was done to repair a compile failure that occured on a build
with the --with-default-api-version=v16 config option

This should fix the compile failure when we used --disable-deprecated-symbols
Cursory commit test
of the H5Ocache.c code to update its image of the on disk representation
of the object header on a call to the clear callback.
This wasn't an issue as long as all flushes of the object header were
made from the same process, but if an object header is modified, and
then flushed on one process and cleared on the rest, the changes were
not be reflected in the images of the on disk representation on all
processes where the object header was cleared rather than flushed.
If one of these processes did the next flush, the changes were lost in
the on disk representation.
Fixed this by causing all dirty messages and to be written to the copy
of the on disk image maintained by the object header code on both flush
and clear.
Also added associated test code in t_mdset.c.
Also checking in some cache debug code developed while chasing this bug.
Commit tested and tested (parallel) on phoenix.
Problem appears to have been caused by file system contention.
In the chunked dataset case, reshaping the chunks so that only one
process would touch each chunk and setting the alignment equal to the
default Lustre block size more or less dealt with the problem.
For contiguous datasets, the problem was a bit more difficult, as
re-working the test to avoid contention would have been very time
consuming.
Instead, I added code to time one execution of each type of shape
same test, and skip additional tests of that type if the duration
of the test exceeded some threshold
In all cases, I set up code to turn off the above fixes if express
test is 0.
Tested on Abe and commit tested. On the commit test, the configure
test failed -- probably because I was h5committest from heiwa due
to some ssh wierdness. In any case a manual reconfigure run on
jam seemed to work fine.
Also, in h5committest, I ran into some data conversion warnings.
I didn't worry about them as the only code I changed was in testpar.
Corrected use/name of source folder aliases.
Duplicated FindMPI.cmake so that non-c++ compiler is found first (recommemded commands did not work).

Commit metadata tagging framework.
Description:
This check-in contains a new framework whose goal is to apply
a tag value to each new entry in the metadata cache as it is created.
This tag value is such that it relates each piece of metadata to the
HDF5 object that it belongs to (dataset, group, et cetera).
This changeset includes the framework that applies the tags as
well as a suite of tests to verify correct tag application, though does
not yet make use of the tag values to flush/evict individual objects.
Please refer to the "flush/evict individual objects" RFC for further
discussion of these changes.

Improve configure's large-file support control.
Description:
Modified configure to now attempt to add defines necessary for
supporting largefiles on all systems, instead of solely on linux. This
is in response to user requests to enable largefile support on Solaris
by default, as well as to give extra control on AIX (instead of just
jamming the necessary flag into the config files).
The old --enable-linux-lfs flag has been removed in favor of the
--enable-largefile flag (enabled by default), which can be used on all
platforms.
On systems where large files cannot be supported in this manner,
configure will report as such.

Autotool Upgrade / Libtool Bug Fix
Description:
Updated autotools referenced in bin/reconfigure as follows:
Autoconf 2.64 --> Autoconf 2.65
Automake 1.11 --> Automake 1.11.1
Libtool 2.2.6a --> Libtool 2.2.6b-mcg
The referenced libtool version is a custom version of 2.2.6b. It
has been tweaked to fix a bug in libtool that occurs
when using PGI 10.0 compilers. A check incorrectly categorizes
the C++ compiler as version 1.0 instead of 10.0, and the link
line is subsequently set up incorrectly and fails to compile.
A patch has been made available and will be included in the next
release of libtool, but in the meantime I've applied the patch to a custom
installation as indicated above. This bin/reconfigure now references
the custom installation, and the resulting configure script will correctly
categorize the PGI 10.0 C++ compiler.
Ran bin/reconfigure to regenerate configure and makefiles.
Tested:
jam and amani with PGI 10.0 compilers.

Unify srcdir handling for test executables and allow them to use the srcdir
setting from configure time without requiring the 'srcdir' environment variable
be set (although you still can, to override the built in setting). Attempted
to get this right for Windows builds also.
Also add dependency between src/H5Tinit.c and src/libhdf5.settings, so
that the test/testcheck_version.sh script works correctly.

The mixed use of RUNTEST (original) and RUNTESTS (new) caused
confusion. E.g., the timings in test/ was still using the old
$RUNTEST. It made more sense to use $RUNTEST which is used
by the dejagnu feature of automake. So, I changed all
$RUNTEST or $RUNTESTS to $RUNEXEC.
config/commence.am & config/conclude.am are the two files
that got changes. Also fixed an error in test/Makefile.am.
The rest are changed by bin/reconfigure.

CFLAGS overhaul
Description:
Modified the way configure handles CFLAGS.
(note: all changes also apply to FCFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, CPPFLAGS, and LDFLAGS).
1. The configure process will now always preserve a user's CFLAGS
environment variable setup. Any additional flags necessary for compilation
added at configure time will be passed into the Makefiles as AM_CFLAGS,
which is an automake construct to be used in addition to CFLAGS.
This will allow a user to have the final say, as CFLAGS will always appear
later in the compile line than AM_CFLAGS. Additionally, setting CFLAGS
during make will no longer completely erase all flags set by configure,
since they're maintained in AM_CFLAGS.
2. Additionally, where possible, flags previously being assigned directly
into CFLAGS (and thus propagating into h5cc) have now been redirected into
H5_CFLAGS, so they're used ONLY for compiling hdf5, and not embedded into
the h5cc wrapper script as well.
*Note that H5_CFLAGS ultimately is assigned into AM_CFLAGS for use in the
Makefiles. Complete description of changes and build process will be
included in a Configure Document that Elena and I are working on.
3. Removed unsupported config files. This includes:
config/dec-osf*
config/hpux11.00
config/irix5.x
config/powerpc-ibm-aix4.x
config/rs6000-ibm-aix5.x

4. Modified configure summary to display additional values. Specifically,
appropriate AM_* variables are being shown, as well as H5_FCFLAGS and
H5_CXXFLAGS, which were for some reason not already present.

prominent configure options (c++, fortran, szip, threadsafe, parallel,

- With regards to new automated testing, anything *necessary* for
compilation will be caught by the daily tests as it stands now. (i.e.,
if LDFLAGS is not properly set when szip is used, linking will fail).
Additionally, with regards to which flags get into h5cc, if any
*necessary* flags have been improperly removed, then daily tests should
fail during make installcheck. Additional machine-specific desired
behaviors and/or checks may have to be set up separately within the
daily tests, so this is something to work on.
Make H5AC_flush just flush the cache and make H5AC_dest perform the
proper parallel synchronization before destroying the cache. Also, further
discriminate between 'closing' and 'non-closing' actions in H5F_flush.

Add 'notify' callback to metadata cache clients, so that they can be
aware when the cache has taken/will take certain actions. Notifications are
urrently limited to when an entry has successfully entered the cache (via an
insertion or a load from the file) and when an entry is about to be evicted
from the cache.

Description:
Fixing BZ #1381. The --includedir=DIR configure option, which is used
to specify the installation location of C header files, did not work
correctly as the path was hard-coded in config/commence.am. I'm presuming
this is because an older version of automake didn't know where to put
c header files. In any case, removing this line now defaults the includedir
to the same directory that it is currently hard-coded to, and also fixes
the configure flag to allow customization of this value.

the way h5ls prints types, it starts searching for NATIVE types first. One solution would be h5ls not to detect these native types, using for example the same print datatype function that h5dump does, that would make the output look the same on all platforms ("32-bit little-endian integer" would be printed instead). Drawback, this "native" information would not be available. Other solution is to have not one but 2 expected outputs and make the shell script detect the endianess and compare with one output or other

The failure was caused by some over active sanity checking code in
unlock_entry(). In essence the code did not consider the possibility
that under certain, very unusual circumstances, an entry could be flushed
to disk during the H5AC_unprotect() call. Instead, it simply failed
if a dirty entry was marked clean after the call to H5AC_unprotect().
This bug in the test code was exposed by recent changes to the default
cache configuration made as part of the "metadata blizard" bug fix.
Fixed the bug by adding code to detect when an entry is flushed during
the call to H5AC_unprotect(), and not trigger a failure if a dirty entry
is marked clean after a call to H5AC_unprotect() if the entry has been
flushed.
In passing also found and fixed another test bug in which expunged
entries were erroneously marked as dirty in the test code's independant
register of entry status.
Tested parallel on Phoenix (AMD64 Linux) and Jam. Also ran t_cache
manually hundreds of times looking for intermittant failures.
Larry kindly tested (parallel) on Mercury.

When enable-debug is turned on, a special macro block H5_HAVE_INSTRUMENTED_LIBRARY inside HDF5 will be executed to check if some collective chunk IO test cases are being run with the correct settings(one link, multiple chunk etc.). However,when complicated derived datatype in some mpi-io packages are not supported, the library has to switch one link IO with/without the optimization to multiple chunk IO with/without the optimization. The current testsuite doesn't know this and generates a false assertion failure message.
This check-in fix this problem by providing a second property to avoid the false faiure message.

Description:
As part of our Windows cleanup, we try to remove windows-specific tweaks in the source code. There are many instances where Windows code is introduces via ifdef's. We re-evaluate whether they are still required, and found that many of them are not. Others we change to "feature"-specific code, rather than Windows-specific.

Description:
The fortran Makefile.am used HDF_FORTRAN to indicate it is part of the
Fortran API source so that conclude.am will give fortran api prefix in the
test output. The symbox HDF_FORTRAN is also used in configure for a different
purpose (indicated --enable-fortran). They conflicted.
Similar problem for the symbol HDF_CXX.
Solution:
Changed all the involved Makefile.am to use "FORTRAN_API" instead. It is
a more appropriate name. Same for CXX_API.
Along the way, discovered that the Makefile.am of hl/fortran/test and
hl/cxx/test did not have those symbols at all. Added them in.
Platform tested:
Kagiso only. It is a trivia change.

Description:
src/libhdf5.settings was the initial configure summary and is installed.
Then configure is changed to dump a summary of the configure settings to
the output and also append it to src/libhdf5.settings. That created
two different output formats and duplicated information. This is the
initial attempt to clean up this confusion and unify the output format.
It is decided to use the src/libhdf5.settings template as the unified means.

The src/libhdf5.settings.in has CONDITIONAL's added to it too. The
untrue conditions turned into a "#" and these lines are cleaned by the
post processing script.

Description: Applying update to autotools that was applied to 1.8 a couple
of weeks ago to the trunk.
Updated bin/reconfigure script to reflect the new versions of
libtool and automake in the /home1/packages/ directory.
Rearranged configure.in script. When using libtool 2.2.2, the
libtool script doesn't generate until later in the configuration
process, so I had to move a test that parsed through the libtool
script to a point after where it was actually being generated.
Ran libtoolize on the project, and ran bin/reconfigure to
regenerate configure and Makefile.in's throughout.
Tested: kagiso, smirom, linew (h5committest)
large entry, or to a large increases in the size of an existing entry.
This required some additions to the cache configuration structure, and
thus will require changes in the metadata cache documentation.
The basic idea is to monitor the size of entries as they are loaded,
inserted, or increased in size. If the size of the entry (or increase)
exceeds some user selected fraction of the size of the cache, increase
the size of the cache.
Note that this fix was designed quickly -- while it deals with the
use case that exposed the problem, we may have to revisit the issue
later.
Tested serial and parallel on Phoenix, and h5committest.
Correct the prototype for H5Sselect_elements() to take an 'hsize_t *' for
the coordinates, instead of 'hsize_t **'.

Add work-around to allow reading files that were produced with a buggy
earlier version of the library, which could create objects with the wrong
object header message count. There is now a configure flag
"--enable-strict-format-checks" which triggers a failure on reading a file
with this sort of corruption (when enabled) and allows the object to be read
(when disabled). The default value for the "strict-format-checks" flag is
yes when the "debug" flag is enabled and no when the "debug" flag is disabled.
Note that if strict format checks are disabled (allowing objects with
this particular kind of corruption to be read) and the file is opened with
write access, the library will re-write the object header for the corrupt
object with the correct # of object header messages.
This closes bugzilla bug #1010.

1. In H5Dwrite and H5Dread, let the data buffer point to a fake address if the application passes
in an empty buffer. This is mainly for MPIO programs that some processes may not have any
data to write or read but still participate the I/O. This solution solves some MPI's problem
like the ChaMPIon on tungsten which doesn't support empty buffer.
2. The ChaMPIon on tungsten doesn't support complex derived MPI data type correctly and collective
I/O when some processes don't have any data to write or read correctly. Detect the compiler
"cmpicc" in the system-specific config file and set the variables for these two cases to false.
The PHDF5 library already has set up a way to switch collective chunked I/O to independent
under these two cases.
3. A bug fix - During the work of the optimization for compound data I/O, the case for switching
collective chunked I/O to independent I/O was leftout. Fixed it by adding I/O caching to it in
H5D_multi_chunk_collective_io in H5Dmpio.c.
Tested on tungsten, cobalt, and kagiso for parallel; on linew and smirom for serial.
Add --enable-deprecated-symbols configure option, to allow users to
remove deprecated public API symbols at configure time.
Add bin/make_vers script to bin/reconfigure actions.
Run bin/reconfigure to regenerate autotool components.

2) Removing configuration of c++/src/H5cxx_pubconf.h file.
Reasoning: the additional pubconf file caused compilation complications, this is cleaner.

Description: added new configuration to generate a pubconf file
in the c++/src directory, H5cxx_pubconf.h. When C++
compiler recognizes 'offsetof', the macro
H5_CXX_HAVE_OFFSETOF is defined in the new
pubconf file.

Description: a new configure flag has been created that will now set a macro
in the test/Makefile. The flag is with-default-vfd=. When set to
a virtual file driver (e.g. "--with-default-vfd=sec2"), the macro
DEFAULT_VFD will hold this value.
Tested: kagiso, smirom, linew
file size from MPI_File_get_size. Bypass this problem by replacing it with
stat. Add an option --disable-mpi-size in configure to indicate this function
doesn't work properly. Add a test in testpar/t_mpi.c, too. If it returns wrong
file size, print out a warning.
Tested on kagiso (parallel) because already tested the same change to v1.6 on
several platforms (kagiso, cobalt, copper, and sol).
Added a header message showing the purpose and explanation that the test is
for inoformation and always exits 0.
Also added a summary at the end.
Some other cosmetic changes (moved couple function code up, added some more
printf, fflush statements.)

Description: Multiple copies of Copyright appeared in Makefile.in. This was
due to automake copying the copyright right in the included files such as
config/commence.am.
Solution: Automake treats double hashes as comments and does not copy them
to Makefile.in. Changed all the copyright notices in config/*.am to use
double hashes for the Copyright right notice.
Tested: kagiso via bin/reconfigure.
Tested platform:
Kagiso only since it is only a comment block change. If it works in one
machine, it should work in all, I hope. Still need to check the parallel
build on copper.
It seems that while Cygwin supports the time command, it has trouble with
the syntax
srcdir="../../hdf5/test" time ./testhdf5
and complains.
The solution is to test the above case in configure and not to use the time
command if it fails; Cygwin is fine with
srcdir="../../hdf5/test" ./testhdf5
Tested on Cygwin and kagiso. This feature shouldn't be a major compatibility
problem since every platform but Cygwin is already fine with the current
syntax.
The h5_mpi_get_file_size() is no longer used. The unused code caused some
compiling warning messages. Removed the whole routine.
Tested in heping pp mode.
The version of libtool used by HDF5 isn't directly affected by the reconfigure
script; instead, libtoolize --force must be used by hand. Libtool was the
source of the problem, so rolling its version back to 1.5.14 should solve the
issue (at least temporarily).
Reconfigure should still work on both heping and kagiso.
Tested on heping, kagiso, and tg-login3.
Should disable linking against shared libraries in Fortran for compilers that
don't support shared libraries.
Should also fix problem when the wrong Fortran file extension was specified.
If these changes don't solve the Daily Test issues, I'll look at backing out
the autotool version change until I have time to fix them.
Tested on heping, kagiso, juniper.
Bug fix.
Description:
AIX complained if some files are still open when MPI_Finalize is called,
so code called _exit without calling MPI_Finalize. But in Linux hosts
with MPICH, the MPI processes terminated but the launch processes got
stuck waiting for those processes to end properly and they would hang
on forever. As more tests ran, more processes got stuck.
Solution:
In order to please both AIX and MPICH, the MPI file handles are retrieved
and closed outside of the HDF5 library, then call MPI_Finalize and then
_exit.
Tested:
in heping and copper.

It seems that, on AIX, calling MPI_Finalize without closing all files results in an error.
This causes t_pflush1 to fail because the whole point of the test is to see what happens if you
don't close a file. Try getting rid of the call to MPI_Finalize to see if this will silence the error.

and quote its arguments. Also checks for the 'socket' library on
Solaris.
If this patch passes the Daily Tests and makes the user happy, I'll
port it back to the 1.6 branch.

Since these examples need to follow filesystem paths, the Makefiles need
to create directories in the examples directory; added this to the
Makefile.am.

To activite this test,
add the command option -i.
For example, at IBM AIX, type "poe testphdf5 -i" will test the library with independent IO with file setview. It simply replaces all the collective IO tests with independent IO with file setview.
"make check-vfd" will now run all tests in the test directory with different
file drivers (at least, all of those tests that use the testing framework's
FAPL). Tests that fail will be skipped.
This is not a perfect fix, but is better than nothing.
Along with this change, check-vfd should be added to the Daily Tests.
1) Added trace file support to the metadata cache. This allows capture
of all metadata cache calls in trace files for purposes of optimization
and debuging.
2) Added an expunge entry function. This allows an entry to be deleteded
from the cache without writing it to disk even if it is dirty.
3) Added a function call to resize pinned entries.
4) Added code to deal with entries that are dirty on load. This is
needed in support of a bug fix which can alter object headers on
load to repair files.
5) Added progress reporting code to the "MDC API smoke check" test in
cache_api.c. To enable the progress reporting, set report_progress
to TRUE in mdc_api_call_smoke_check().
Tested with h5committest, and a parallel test on phoenix (dual athelon
linux box).

ti-chunk IO with collective in chunking storage directly. That is, the library won't do an
alyses to determine this.
The flags for the enum type we used before are:

was unable to reproduce the bug on Cobalt, so we don't know if my
fix actually addressed the problem.

relatively trivial, but required substantial new test code.

The ${TR}, though avoid the error, is inconvenient. It is needed
because configure.in use the char range in the style of 'a-z'.
The other style of '[a-z]' is more commonly accepted by all tr
but autoconf tends to strip away [], making the syntax rather
clumsy.
Solution:
Learned from autoconf that it avoids the use of character range
by just spell all the letters out. Changed our tr commands to
use those variables defined by autoconf. Also removed the
definition of ${TR} since it will cause inconsistancy when
autoconf also use plain 'tr' in its generated code.
The Makefile.in are changed because the elimination of ${TR} from
configure triggered its removal from all Makefil.in. That is okay
because ${TR} is not used at all in Makefile.

evicted, but can be flushed or modified.
