27fe5f2e67 Linux: Require properly configured /dev/pts for PTYs
Current systems do not have BSD terminals, so the fallback code in
posix_openpt/getpt does not do anything. Also remove the file system
check for /dev/pts. Current systems always have a devpts file system
mounted there if /dev/ptmx exists.

grantpt is now essentially a no-op. It only verifies that the
argument is a ptmx-descriptor. Therefore, this change indirectly
addresses bug 24941.

d3c5702747 Reversing calculation of __x86_shared_non_temporal_threshold
The __x86_shared_non_temporal_threshold determines when memcpy on x86
uses non_temporal stores to avoid pushing other data out of the last
level cache.

This patch proposes to revert the calculation change made by H.J. Lu's
patch of June 2, 2017.

H.J. Lu's patch selected a threshold suitable for a single thread
getting maximum performance. It was tuned using the single threaded
large memcpy micro benchmark on an 8 core processor. The last change
changes the threshold from using 3/4 of one thread's share of the
cache to using 3/4 of the entire cache of a multi-threaded system
before switching to non-temporal stores. Multi-threaded systems with
more than a few threads are server-class and typically have many
active threads. If one thread consumes 3/4 of the available cache for
all threads, it will cause other active threads to have data removed
from the cache. Two examples show the range of the effect. John
McCalpin's widely parallel Stream benchmark, which runs in parallel
and fetches data sequentially, saw a 20% slowdown with this patch on
an internal system test of 128 threads. This regression was discovered
when comparing OL8 performance to OL7. An example that compares
normal stores to non-temporal stores may be found at
https://vgatherps.github.io/2018-09-02-nontemporal/. A simple test
shows performance loss of 400 to 500% due to a failure to use
nontemporal stores. These performance losses are most likely to occur
when the system load is heaviest and good performance is critical.

The tunable x86_non_temporal_threshold can be used to override the
default for the knowledgable user who really wants maximum cache
allocation to a single thread in a multi-threaded system.
The manual entry for the tunable has been expanded to provide
more information about its purpose.

.so files. When COMMON_CPUID_INDEX_MAX is increased to support new
processor features, __x86_get_cpu_features in the older glibc binaries
returns NULL and HAS_CPU_FEATURE/CPU_FEATURE_USABLE return false on the
new processor feature. No new symbol version is neeeded.

Both CPU_FEATURE_USABLE and HAS_CPU_FEATURE are provided. HAS_CPU_FEATURE
can be used to identify processor features.

Note: Although GCC has __builtin_cpu_supports, it only supports a subset
of <sys/platform/x86.h> and it is equivalent to CPU_FEATURE_USABLE. It
doesn't support HAS_CPU_FEATURE.

Sun RPC was removed from glibc. This includes rpcgen program, librpcsvc,
and Sun RPC headers. Also test for bug #20790 was removed

Backward compatibility for old programs is kept only for architectures
and ABIs that have been added in or before version 2.28.

libtirpc is mature enough, librpcsvc and rpcgen are provided in
rpcsvc-proto project.

NOTE: libnsl code depends on Sun RPC (installed libnsl headers use
installed Sun RPC headers), thus --enable-obsolete-rpc was a dependency
for --enable-obsolete-nsl (removed in a previous commit).

The arc ABI list file has to be updated because the port was added

ffb17e7ba3 rtld: Avoid using up static TLS surplus for optimizations [BZ #25051]
On some targets static TLS surplus area can be used opportunistically
for dynamically loaded modules such that the TLS access then becomes
faster (TLSDESC and powerpc TLS optimization). However we don't want
all surplus TLS to be used for this optimization because dynamically
loaded modules with initial-exec model TLS can only use surplus TLS.

The new contract for surplus static TLS use is:

- libc.so can have up to 192 bytes of IE TLS,
- other system libraries together can have up to 144 bytes of IE TLS.
- Some "optional" static TLS is available for opportunistic use.

The optional TLS is now tunable: rtld.optional_static_tls, so users
can directly affect the allocated static TLS size. (Note that module
unloading with dlclose does not reclaim static TLS. After the optional
TLS runs out, TLS access is no longer optimized to use static TLS.)

The default setting of rtld.optional_static_tls is 512 so the surplus
TLS is 3*192 + 4*144 + 512 = 1664 by default, the same as before.

Fixes BZ #25051.

Tested on aarch64-linux-gnu and x86_64-linux-gnu.

17796419b5 rtld: Account static TLS surplus for audit modules
The new static TLS surplus size computation is

  surplus_tls = 192 * (nns-1) + 144 * nns + 512

where nns is controlled via the rtld.nns tunable. This commit
accounts audit modules too so nns = rtld.nns + audit modules.

rtld.nns should only include the namespaces required by the
application, namespaces for audit modules are accounted on top
of that so audit modules don't use up the static TLS that is
reserved for the application. This allows loading many audit
modules without tuning rtld.nns or using up static TLS, and it
fixes

FAIL: elf/tst-auditmany

Note that DL_NNS is currently a hard upper limit for nns, and
if rtld.nns + audit modules go over the limit that's a fatal
error. By default rtld.nns is 4 which allows 12 audit modules.

Counting the audit modules is based on existing audit string
parsing code, we cannot use GLRO(dl_naudit) before the modules
are actually loaded.

0c7b002fac rtld: Add rtld.nns tunable for the number of supported namespaces
TLS_STATIC_SURPLUS is 1664 bytes currently which is not enough to
support DL_NNS (== 16) number of dynamic link namespaces, if we
assume 192 bytes of TLS are reserved for libc use and 144 bytes
are reserved for other system libraries that use IE TLS.

A new tunable is introduced to control the number of supported
namespaces and to adjust the surplus static TLS size as follows:

surplus_tls = 192 * (rtld.nns-1) + 144 * rtld.nns + 512

The default is rtld.nns == 4 and then the surplus TLS size is the
same as before, so the behaviour is unchanged by default. If an
application creates more namespaces than the rtld.nns setting
allows, then it is not guaranteed to work, but the limit is not
checked. So existing usage will continue to work, but in the
future if an application creates more than 4 dynamic link
namespaces then the tunable will need to be set.

In this patch DL_NNS is a fixed value and provides a maximum to
the rtld.nns setting.

Static linking used fixed 2048 bytes surplus TLS, this is changed
so the same contract is used as for dynamic linking. With static
linking DL_NNS == 1 so rtld.nns tunable is forced to 1, so by
default the surplus TLS is reduced to 144 + 512 = 656 bytes. This
change is not expected to cause problems.

Tested on aarch64-linux-gnu and x86_64-linux-gnu.

ae7a94e5e3 Remove --enable-obsolete-nsl configure flag
this means that *always* libnsl is only built as shared library for
backward compatibility and the NSS modules libnss_nis and libnss_nisplus
are not built at all, libnsl's headers aren't installed.

This compatibility is kept only for architectures and ABIs that have

Replacement implementations based on TIRPC, which additionally support
IPv6, are available from <https://github.com/thkukuk/>.

This change does not affect libnss_compat which does not depended
on libnsl since 2.27 and thus can be used without NIS.

libnsl code depends on Sun RPC, e.g. on --enable-obsolete-rpc (installed
libnsl headers use installed Sun RPC headers), which will be removed in
the following commit.

61af4bbb2a mbstowcs: Document, test, and fix null pointer dst semantics (Bug 25219)
The function mbstowcs, by an XSI extension to POSIX, accepts a null
pointer for the destination wchar_t array. This API behaviour allows
you to use the function to compute the length of the required wchar_t
array i.e. does the conversion without storing it and returns the
number of wide characters required.

We remove the __write_only__ markup for the first argument because it
is not true since the destination may be a null pointer, and so the
length argument may not apply. We remove the markup otherwise the new
test case cannot be compiled with -Werror=nonnull.

We add a new test case for mbstowcs which exercises the destination is
a null pointer behaviour which we have now explicitly documented.

The mbsrtowcs and mbsnrtowcs behave similarly, and mbsrtowcs is
documented as doing this in C11, even if the standard doesn't come out
and call out this specific use case. We add one note to each of
mbsrtowcs and mbsnrtowcs to call out that they support a null pointer
for the destination.

The wcsrtombs function behaves similarly but in the other way around
and allows you to use a null destination pointer to compute how many
bytes you would need to convert the wide character input. We document
this particular case also, but leave wcsnrtombs as a references to
wcsrtombs, so the reader must still read the details of the semantics
for wcsrtombs.

When CET is enabled, it is an error to dlopen a non CET enabled shared
library in CET enabled application. It may be desirable to make CET
permissive, that is disable CET when dlopening a non CET enabled shared
library. With the new --enable-cet=permissive configure option, CET is
disabled when dlopening a non CET enabled shared library.

Add DEFAULT_DL_X86_CET_CONTROL to config.h.in:

/* The default value of x86 CET control. */
 #define DEFAULT_DL_X86_CET_CONTROL cet_elf_property

which enables CET features based on ELF property note.

--enable-cet=permissive it to

/* The default value of x86 CET control. */
 #define DEFAULT_DL_X86_CET_CONTROL cet_permissive

which enables CET features permissively.

Update tst-cet-legacy-5a, tst-cet-legacy-5b, tst-cet-legacy-6a and
tst-cet-legacy-6b to check --enable-cet and --enable-cet=permissive.

50545f5aa0 powerpc64le: raise GCC requirement to 7.4 for long double transition
Add compiler feature tests to ensure we can build ieee128 long double.
These test for -mabi=ieeelongdouble, -mno-gnu-attribute, and -Wno-psabi.

Likewise, verify some compiler bugs have been addressed. These aren't
helpful for building glibc, but may cause test failures when testing
the new long double. See notes below from Raji.

On powerpc64le, some older compiler versions give error for the function
signbit() for 128-bit floating point types. This is fixed by PR83862
in gcc 8.0 and backported to gcc6 and gcc7. This patch adds a test
to check compiler version to avoid compiler errors during make check.

Likewise, test for -mno-gnu-attribute support which was

On powerpc64le, a few files are built on IEEE long double mode
(-mabi=ieeelongdouble), whereas most are built on IBM long double mode
(-mabi=ibmlongdouble, the default for -mlong-double-128). Since binutils
2.31, linking object files with different long double modes causes
errors similar to:

ld: libc_pic.a(s_isinfl.os) uses IBM long double,
      libc_pic.a(ieee128-qefgcvt.os) uses IEEE long double.
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
  make[2]: *** [../Makerules:649: libc_pic.os] Error 1

The warnings are fair and correct, but in order for glibc to have
support for both long double modes on powerpc64le, they have to be
ignored. This can be accomplished with the use of -mno-gnu-attribute
option when building the few files that require IEEE long double mode.

However, -mno-gnu-attribute is not available in GCC 6, the minimum
version required to build glibc, so this patch adds a test for this
feature in powerpc64le builds, and fails early if it's not available.

This is a thorough revision of all the material relating to the

discussion of time-related data types (which now get their own
section) and touching the adjtime family as well (which deserves its
own thorough revision, but I'd have to do a bunch of research first).

Substantive changes are:

 * Document clock_gettime, clock_getres, and clock_settime.  (Only
CLOCK_REALTIME and CLOCK_MONOTONIC are documented; the others are
either a bit too Linux-specific, or have more to do with measuring
CPU/processor time. That section _also_ deserves its own thorough
revision but again I'd have to do a bunch of research first.)

 * Present gettimeofday, settimeofday, and struct timeval as obsolete
   relative to clock_*.

 * Remove the documentation of struct timezone. Matching POSIX,
say that the type of the second argument to gettimeofday and
   settimeofday is [const] void *.

 * Clarify ISO C and POSIX's requirements on time_t. Clarify the
circumstances under which difftime is equivalent to simple
   subtraction.

 * Consolidate documentation of most of the time-related data types
into a new section "Time Types," right after "Time Basics." (The
exceptions are struct tm, which stays in "Broken-down Time," and
struct times, which stays in "Processor And CPU Time."

 * The "Elapsed Time" section is now called "Calculating Elapsed Time"
and includes only difftime and the discussion of how to compute
   timeval differences by hand.

 * Fold the "Simple Calendar Time," "High Resolution Calendar," and
"High Accuracy Clock" sections together into two new sections titled
"Getting the Time" and "Setting and Adjusting the Time."

7f0e1933f0 manual: Remove warning in the documentation of the abort function
The warning is confusing to those who do not understand the context,
and the warning is easy to misunderstand:

A reader needs to know that it was written by someone who is generally
skeptical of government influence and control, otherwise it reads as
an affirmation of the U.S. government's role as the ultimate editor of
the manual. This is precisely the opposite of what the warning
intends to convey. (Reportedly, it criticizes that several
U.S. administrations have tried to restrict the medical advice that
U.S.-funded health care workers can provide abroad, considering that
censorship.)

The warning is also misleading on a technical level. A reader who
makes the connection to pregnancy termination will get the wrong
impression that calling the abort function will terminate subprocesses
of the current process, but this is not what generally happens.

Finally, for both GNU and the FSF, it is inappropriate to use female
reproductive health as mere joke material, since these organizations
do not concern themselves with such issues otherwise, and the warning
is purportedly about something else entirely.

This reinstates commit 340d9652b9
("manual/startup.texi (Aborting a Program): Remove inappropriate
joke."), effectively reverting the revert in commit
ffa81c22a3 ("Revert:").

42760d7646 Make totalorder and totalordermag functions take pointer arguments.
The resolution of C floating-point Clarification Request 25
<http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/docs/n2397.htm#dr_25> is
that the totalorder and totalordermag functions should take pointer
arguments, and this has been adopted in C2X (with const added; note
that the integration of this change into C2X is present in the C
standard git repository but postdates the most recent public PDF
draft).

This patch updates glibc accordingly. As a defect resolution, the API
is changed unconditionally rather than supporting any sort of TS
18661-1 mode for compilation with the old version of the API. There
are compat symbols for existing binaries that pass floating-point
arguments directly. As a consequence of changing to pointer
arguments, there are no longer type-generic macros in tgmath.h for
these functions.

Because of the fairly complicated logic for creating libm function
aliases and determining the set of aliases to create in a given glibc
configuration, rather than duplicating all that in individual source
files to create the versioned and compat symbols, the source files for
the various versions of totalorder functions are set up to redefine
weak_alias before using libm_alias_* macros to create the symbols
required. In turn, this requires creating a separate alias for each
symbol version pointing to the same implementation (see binutils bug
<https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=23840>), which is
done automatically using __COUNTER__. (As I noted in
<https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2018-10/msg00631.html>, it might
well make sense for glibc's symbol versioning macros to do that alias
creation with __COUNTER__ themselves, which would somewhat simplify
the logic in the totalorder source files.)

It is of course desirable to test the compat symbols. I did this with
the generic libm-test machinery, but didn't wish to duplicate the
actual tables of test inputs and outputs, and thought it risky to
attempt to have a single object file refer to both default and compat
versions of the same function in order to test them together. Thus, I
created libm-test-compat_totalorder.inc and
libm-test-compat_totalordermag.inc which include the generated .c
files (with the processed version of those tables of inputs) from the
non-compat tests, and added appropriate dependencies. I think this
provides sufficient test coverage for the compat symbols without also
needing to make the special ldbl-96 and ldbl-128ibm tests (of
peculiarities relating to the representations of those formats that
can't be covered in the generic tests) run for the compat symbols.

Tests of compat symbols need to be internal tests, meaning _ISOMAC is
not defined. Making some libm-test tests into internal tests showed
up two other issues. GCC diagnoses duplicate macro definitions of
__STDC_* macros, including __STDC_WANT_IEC_60559_TYPES_EXT__; I added
an appropriate conditional and filed
<https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=91451> for this issue.
On ia64, include/setjmp.h ends up getting included indirectly from
libm-symbols.h, resulting in conflicting definitions of the STR macro
(also defined in libm-test-driver.c); I renamed the macros in
include/setjmp.h. (It's arguable that we should have common internal
headers used everywhere for stringizing and concatenation macros.)

Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py.

777d75fbc0 Add feature test macro _ISOC2X_SOURCE.
This patch starts preparation for C2X support in glibc headers by
adding a feature test macro _ISOC2X_SOURCE and corresponding
__GLIBC_USE (ISOC2X). (I chose to use the newer __GLIBC_USE style for
this rather than the older __USE_* macros tested with #ifdef.) As
with other such macros, C2X features are also enabled by compiling for
a standard newer than C17, or by using _GNU_SOURCE.

This patch does not itself enable anything new in the headers for C2X;
that is to be done in followup patches. (For example, most of the TS
18661-1 functions should be declared for C2X without any
__STDC_WANT_IEC_60559_BFP_EXT__ being needed, but the ones that
18661-1 adds to Annex F because of their close relation to IEEE 754
formats do still need the WANT macro in C2X.)

Once C2X becomes an actual standard we'll presumably move to using the
actual year in the feature test macro and __GLIBC_USE, with some
period when both macro spellings are accepted, as was done with
_ISOC9X_SOURCE.

Tested for x86_64.

	* include/features.h (_ISOC2X_SOURCE): New feature test macro.
Undefine and define to 1 if [_GNU_SOURCE].
(__GLIBC_USE_ISOC2X): New macro. Undefine and redefine depending
	on [_ISOC2X_SOURCE] and [__STDC_VERSION__ > 201710L].
	(__USE_ISOC11): Also define to 1 if [_ISOC2X_SOURCE].
	(__USE_ISOC99): Likewise.
	(__USE_ISOC95): Likewise.
	* manual/creature.texi (_ISOC2X_SOURCE): Document.

e996fa72a9 nptl: Add POSIX-proposed pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock & pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock
Add:
 int pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock (pthread_rwlock_t *rwlock,
                                 clockid_t clockid,
                                 const struct timespec *abstime)
and:
 int pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock (pthread_rwlock_t *rwlock,

                                 const struct timespec *abstime)

which behave like pthread_rwlock_timedrdlock and
pthread_rwlock_timedwrlock respectively, except they always measure
abstime against the supplied clockid. The functions currently support
CLOCK_REALTIME and CLOCK_MONOTONIC and return EINVAL if any other
clock is specified.

	* sysdeps/nptl/pthread.h: Add pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock and

a0a0dc8317 Remove obsolete, never-implemented XSI STREAMS declarations
The stub implementations are turned into compat symbols.

Linux actually has two reserved system call numbers (for getpmsg
and putpmsg), but these system calls have never been implemented,
and there are no plans to implement them, so this patch replaces
the wrappers with the generic stubs.

According to <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=436349>,
the presence of the XSI STREAMS declarations is a minor portability
hazard because they are not actually implemented.

This commit does not change the TIRPC support code in
sunrpc/rpc_svcout.c. It uses additional XTI functionality and
therefore never worked with glibc.

4dcbbc3b28 Require GCC 6.2 or later to build glibc.
As discussed during development for glibc 2.29, when we increased the
required minimum GCC version for building glibc to GCC 5, working
purely based on the times at which such requirements have been
increased in the past it would be appropriate for glibc 2.30 to
require GCC 6 (matching GCC 4.9 having been required for glibc 2.26).
Naming 6.2 specifically as the minimum version then means a separate
version requirement no longer needs to be specified for powerpc64le.

Thus, this patch increases the minimum to 6.2, removing the
documentation of the separate requirement for powerpc64le. It does
not remove the powerpc64le configure test, or any __GNUC_PREREQ that
could be removed as not being in installed headers or files shared
with gnulib; I think such cleanups are best done separately.

b22eed3710 strftime: Set the default width of "%Ey" to 2 [BZ #23758]
In Japanese locales, strftime's alternative year format (%Ey) produces
a year numbered within a time period called an _era_. A new era
typically begins when a new emperor is enthroned. The result of "%Ey"
is therefore usually a one- or two-digit number.

Many programs that display Japanese era dates assume that the era year
is two digits wide. To improve how these programs display dates
during the first nine years of a new era, change "%Ey" to pad one-
digit numbers on the left with a zero. This change applies to all
locales. It is expected to be harmless for other locales that use the
alternative year format (e.g. lo_LA and th_TH, in which "%Ey" produces
the year of the Buddhist calendar) as those calendars' year numbers
are already more than two digits wide, and this is not expected to
change.

This change needs to be in place before 2019-05-01 CE, as a new era is
scheduled to begin on that date.

192963be49 Require GCC 5 or later to build glibc (bug 23993).
We know that building glibc with GCC 4.9 is broken on various
platforms (bug 23993). As it's more than a year since we last
increased the minimum GCC version to build glibc, this patch changes
the requirement to be GCC 5 or later (indeed, based on 4.9 having been
required for building 2.26, it would be consistent in terms of timing
to require GCC 6 or later from the 2.30 release onwards). It
deliberately just updates the configure test and corresponding
documentation, leaving removal of no-longer-needed __GNUC_PREREQ tests
for a separate patch.

In the NEWS entry, the requirement for a newer GCC version for
powerpc64le is reiterated (as in the entry for the 4.9 requirement in
2.26) to avoid suggesting the version requirement there has gone down.
(If that version goes up further as part of support for binary128 long
double, of course the wording would change at that time.)

cb7be1590e Use gen-as-const.py to process .pysym files.
This patch eliminates the gen-py-const.awk variant of gen-as-const,
switching to use of gnu-as-const.py (with a new --python option) to
process .pysym files (i.e., to generate nptl_lock_constants.py), as
the syntax of those files is identical to that of .sym files.

Note that the generated nptl_lock_constants.py is *not* identical to
the version generated by the awk script. Apart from the trivial
changes (comment referencing the new script, and output being sorted),
the constant FUTEX_WAITERS, PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_BITS,
PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_PSHARED and PTHREAD_MUTEX_PRIO_CEILING_MASK are
now output as positive rather than negative constants (on x86_64
anyway; maybe not necessarily on 32-bit systems):

< FUTEX_WAITERS = -2147483648
---
> FUTEX_WAITERS = 2147483648

< PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_BITS = -251662336
< PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_PSHARED = -2147483648
---
> PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_BITS = 4043304960
> PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_PSHARED = 2147483648

< PTHREAD_MUTEX_PRIO_CEILING_MASK = -524288
---
> PTHREAD_MUTEX_PRIO_CEILING_MASK = 4294443008

This is because gen-as-const has a cast of the constant value to long
int, which gen-py-const lacks.

I think the positive values are more logically correct, since the
constants in question are in fact unsigned in C. But to reliably
produce gen-as-const.py output for constants that always (in C and
Python) reflects the signedness of values with the high bit of "long
int" set would mean more complicated logic needs to be used in
computing values.

The more correct positive values by themselves produce a failure of
nptl/test-mutexattr-printers, because masking with
~PTHREAD_MUTEXATTR_FLAG_BITS & ~PTHREAD_MUTEX_NO_ELISION_NP now leaves
a bit -1 << 32 in the Python value, resulting in a KeyError exception.
To avoid that, places masking with ~ of one of the constants in
question are changed to mask with 0xffffffff as well (this reflects
how ~ in Python applies to an infinite-precision integer whereas ~ in
C does not do any promotions beyond the width of int).

6310e6be9b Mutex: Add pthread mutex tunables
This patch does not have any functionality change, we only provide a spin
count tunes for pthread adaptive spin mutex. The tunable
glibc.pthread.mutex_spin_count tunes can be used by system administrator to
squeeze system performance according to different hardware capabilities and
workload characteristics.

The maximum value of spin count is limited to 32767 to avoid the overflow
of mutex->__data.__spins variable with the possible type of short in
pthread_mutex_lock ().

The default value of spin count is set to 100 with the reference to the
previous number of times of spinning via trylock. This value would be
architecture-specific and can be tuned with kinds of benchmarks to fit most
cases in future.

I would extend my appreciation sincerely to H.J.Lu for his help to refine
this patch series.

c75772e3f0 Use STRFMON_LDBL_IS_DBL instead of __ldbl_is_dbl.
On platforms where long double used to have the same format as double,
but later switched to a different format (alpha, s390, sparc, and
powerpc), accessing the older behavior is possible and it happens via
__nldbl_* functions (not on the API, but accessible from header
redirection and from compat symbols). These functions write to the
global flag __ldbl_is_dbl, which tells other functions that long double
variables should be handled as double. This patch takes the first step
towards removing this global flag and creates __vstrfmon_l_internal,
which takes an explicit flags parameter.

This change arguably makes the generated code slightly worse on
architectures where __ldbl_is_dbl is never true; right now, on those
architectures, it's a compile-time constant; after this change, the
compiler could theoretically prove that __vstrfmon_l_internal was
never called with a nonzero flags argument, but it would probably need
LTO to do it. This is not performance critical code and I tend to
think that the maintainability benefits of removing action at a
distance are worth it. However, we _could_ wrap the runtime flag
check with a macro that was defined to ignore its argument and always
return false on architectures where __ldbl_is_dbl is never true, if
people think the codegen benefits are important.

Tested for powerpc and powerpc64le.

c6982f7efc Patch to require Python 3.4 or later to build glibc.
This patch makes Python 3.4 or later a required tool for building
glibc, so allowing changes of awk, perl etc. code used in the build

This patch makes the configure test for Python check the version and

b71ac2b9ce Use gen-libm-test.py to generate ulps table for manual.
This patch extends gen-libm-test.py to generate the ulps table for the

3c1622eb77 Update install.texi documentation of uses of Perl and Python.
The install.texi documentation of uses of Perl and Python is
substantially out of date.

The description of Perl is "to test the installation" (which I
interpret as referring to test-installation.pl), but it's used for
more tests than that, and to build the manual, and to regenerate one
file in the source tree.

The description of Python is only for pretty-printer tests, but it's
used for other tests / benchmarks as well (and for other internal uses
such as updating Unicode data, for which we already require Python 3,
but I think install.texi only needs to describe uses from the main
glibc Makefiles).

This patch updates the descriptions of what those tools are used for.
The Python information (and information about other tools for testing
pretty printers) was awkwardly in the middle of the general
description of building and testing glibc, rather than with the rest
of information about tools used in glibc build and test; this patch
moves the information about those tools into the main list.

Tested with regeneration of INSTALL as well as "make info" and "make
pdf".

841785bad1 manual: Revise crypt.texi.
This is a major rewrite of the description of 'crypt', 'getentropy',
and 'getrandom'.

A few highlights of the content changes:

 - Throughout the manual, public headers, and user-visible messages,
I replaced the term "password" with "passphrase", the term
"password database" with "user database", and the term
"encrypt(ion)" with "(one-way) hashing" whenever it was applied to
passphrases. I didn't bother making this change in internal code
or tests. The use of the term "password" in ruserpass.c survives,
because that refers to a keyword in netrc files, but it is adjusted
   to make this clearer.

There is a note in crypt.texi explaining that they were
traditionally called passwords but single words are not good enough
anymore, and a note in users.texi explaining that actual passphrase
hashes are found in a "shadow" database nowadays.

 - There is a new short introduction to the "Cryptographic Functions"
section, explaining how we do not intend to be a general-purpose
cryptography library, and cautioning that there _are_, or have
been, legal restrictions on the use of cryptography in many
countries, without getting into any kind of detail that we can't
promise to keep up to date.

 - I added more detail about what a "one-way function" is, and why
they are used to obscure passphrases for storage. I removed the
paragraph saying that systems not connected to a network need no
user authentication, because that's a pretty rare situation
nowadays. (It still says "sometimes it is necessary" to
   authenticate the user, though.)

 - I added documentation for all of the hash functions that glibc
actually supports, but not for the additional hash functions
supported by libxcrypt. If we're going to keep this manual section
around after the transition is more advanced, it would probably
make sense to add them then.

 - There is much more detailed discussion of how to generate a salt,
and the failure behavior for crypt is documented. (Returning an
invalid hash on failure is what libxcrypt does; Solar Designer's
notes say that this was done "for compatibility with old programs
that assume crypt can never fail".)

 - As far as I can tell, the header 'crypt.h' is entirely a GNU
invention, and never existed on any other Unix lineage. The
function 'crypt', however, was in Issue 1 of the SVID and is now
in the XSI component of POSIX. I tried to make all of the
@standards annotations consistent with this, but I'm not sure I got
   them perfectly right.

 - The genpass.c example has been improved to use getentropy instead
of the current time to generate the salt, and to use a SHA-256 hash
instead of MD5. It uses more random bytes than is strictly
necessary because I didn't want to complicate the code with proper
   base64 encoding.

 - The testpass.c example has three hardwired hashes now, to
demonstrate that different one-way functions produce different
hashes for the same input. It also demonstrates how DES hashing
only pays attention to the first eight characters of the input.

 - There is new text explaining in more detail how a CSPRNG differs
from a regular random number generator, and how
getentropy/getrandom are not exactly a CSPRNG. I tried not to make
specific falsifiable claims here. I also tried to make the
blocking/cancellation/error behavior of both getentropy and
   getrandom clearer.

6ab902e4de manual: Reorganize crypt.texi.
In preparation for a major revision of the documentation for
crypt(_r), getentropy, and getrandom, reorganize crypt.texi. This
patch does not change any text; it only deletes and moves text.

The description of 'getpass' moves to terminal.texi, since all it does
is read a password from the controlling terminal with echo disabled.
The "Legal Problems" section of crypt.texi is dropped, and the
introductory text is shifted down to the "Encrypting Passwords"
section; the next patch will add some new introductory text.

Also, it is no longer true that crypt.texi's top @node needs to have
no pointers. That was a vestige of crypt/ being an add-on. (makeinfo
itself doesn't need @node pointers anymore, but the scripts that
assemble the libc manual's topmost node rely on each chapter-level
node having them.)

b10a0accee Disallow use of DES encryption functions in new programs.
The functions encrypt, setkey, encrypt_r, setkey_r, cbc_crypt,
ecb_crypt, and des_setparity should not be used in new programs,
because they use the DES block cipher, which is unacceptably weak by
modern standards. Demote all of them to compatibility symbols, and
remove their prototypes from installed headers. cbc_crypt, ecb_crypt,
and des_setparity were already compat symbols when glibc was
configured with --disable-obsolete-rpc.

POSIX requires encrypt and setkey to be available when _XOPEN_CRYPT
is defined, so this change also removes the definition of X_OPEN_CRYPT
from <unistd.h>.

The entire "DES Encryption" section is dropped from the manual, as is
the mention of AUTH_DES and FIPS 140-2 in the introduction to
crypt.texi. The documentation of 'memfrob' cross-referenced the DES
Encryption section, which is replaced by a hyperlink to libgcrypt, and
while I was in there I spruced up the actual documentation of
'memfrob' and 'strfry' a little. It's still fairly jokey, because
those functions _are_ jokes, but they do also have real use cases, so
people trying to use them for real should have all the information
they need.

DES-based authentication for Sun RPC is also insecure and should be
deprecated or even removed, but maybe that can be left as TI-RPC's
problem.

06ab719d30 Fix Linux fcntl OFD locks for non-LFS architectures (BZ#20251)
This patch fixes the OFD ("file private") locks for architectures that
support non-LFS flock definition (__USE_FILE_OFFSET64 not defined). The
issue in this case is both F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} and
F_{SET,GET}L{W}K64 expects a flock64 argument and when using old
F_OFD_* flags with a non LFS flock argument the kernel might interpret
the underlying data wrongly. Kernel idea originally was to avoid using
such flags in non-LFS syscall, but since GLIBC uses fcntl with LFS
semantic as default it is possible to provide the functionality and
avoid the bogus struct kernel passing by adjusting the struct manually
for the required flags.

The idea follows other LFS interfaces that provide two symbols:

  1. A new LFS fcntl64 is added on default ABI with the usual macros to
     select it for FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64.

  2. The Linux non-LFS fcntl use a stack allocated struct flock64 for
F_OFD_{GETLK,SETLK,SETLKW} copy the results on the user provided
     struct.

  3. Keep a compat symbol with old broken semantic for architectures
     that do not define __OFF_T_MATCHES_OFF64_T.

So for architectures which defines __USE_FILE_OFFSET64, fcntl64 will
aliased to fcntl and no adjustment would be required. So to actually
use F_OFD_* with LFS support the source must be built with LFS support
(_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64).

Also F_OFD_SETLKW command is handled a cancellation point, as for
F_SETLKW{64}.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu and i686-linux-gnu.

69a01461ee Add narrowing multiply functions.
This patch adds the narrowing multiply functions from TS 18661-1 to
glibc's libm: fmul, fmull, dmull, f32mulf64, f32mulf32x, f32xmulf64
for all configurations; f32mulf64x, f32mulf128, f64mulf64x,

with _Float64x and _Float128; __nldbl_dmull for ldbl-opt.

The changes are mostly essentially the same as for the narrowing add
functions, so the description of those generally applies to this patch
as well. f32xmulf64 for i386 cannot use precision control as used for
add and subtract, because that would result in double rounding for
subnormal results, so that uses round-to-odd with long double
intermediate result instead. The soft-fp support involves adding a
new FP_TRUNC_COOKED since soft-fp multiplication uses cooked inputs
and outputs.

Tested for x86_64, x86, mips64 (all three ABIs, both hard and soft
float) and powerpc, and with build-many-glibcs.py.

* manual/startup.texi (Aborting a Program): Remove inappropriate joke.

This complies with the decision of the project leader and primary and
ultimate maintainer, who partially delegated maintainership to myself
and others under certain constraints.

This is also in line with the community-agreed procedures.

It is obvious that we didn't have consensus on a decision to install
that patch, since both sides are still arguing over it.

As for the decision to reverse the deletion, if we even need one to
counter a move that did not have consensus, although nobody else offered
to install the reversal and restore the status prior to the fait
accompli, and some explicitly refused to do so themselves, nobody
objected when I offered to do so. Therefore, by the same reasoning that
led to the mistaken installation of the patch, and after a much longer
wait for objections, I understand there is consensus on my reverting it.

a3fb6b6bc3 Remove tilegx port.
Since tile support has been removed from the Linux kernel for 4.17,
this patch removes the (unmaintained) port to tilegx from glibc (the
tilepro support having been previously removed). This reflects the
general principle that a glibc port needs upstream support for the
architecture in all the components it build-depends on (so binutils,
GCC and the Linux kernel, for the normal case of a port supporting the
Linux kernel but no other OS), in order to be maintainable.

Apart from removal of sysdeps/tile and sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/tile,
there are updates to various comments referencing tile for which
removal of those references seemed appropriate. The configuration is
removed from README and from build-many-glibcs.py. contrib.texi keeps
mention of removed contributions, but I updated Chris Metcalf's entry
to reflect that he also contributed the non-removed support for the
generic Linux kernel syscall interface.

cf138b0c83 manual: Various fixes to the mbstouwcs example, and mbrtowc update
The example did not work because the null byte was not converted, and
mbrtowc was called with a zero-length input string. This results in a
(size_t) -2 return value, so the function always returns NULL.

The size computation for the heap allocation of the result was
incorrect because it did not deal with integer overflow.

Error checking was missing, and the allocated memory was not freed on
error paths. All error returns now set errno. (Note that there is an
assumption that free does not clobber errno.)

The slightly unportable comparision against (size_t) -2 to catch both
(size_t) -1 and (size_t) -2 return values is gone as well.

A null wide character needs to be stored in the result explicitly, to
terminate it.

The description in the manual is updated to deal with these finer
points. The (size_t) -2 behavior (consuming the input bytes) matches
what is specified in ISO C11.

8d3f9e85cf Add narrowing subtract functions.
This patch adds the narrowing subtract functions from TS 18661-1 to
glibc's libm: fsub, fsubl, dsubl, f32subf64, f32subf32x, f32xsubf64
for all configurations; f32subf64x, f32subf128, f64subf64x,
f64subf128, f32xsubf64x, f32xsubf128, f64xsubf128 for configurations
with _Float64x and _Float128; __nldbl_dsubl for ldbl-opt.

The changes are essentially the same as for the narrowing add
functions, so the description of those generally applies to this patch
as well.

Tested for x86_64, x86, mips64 (all three ABIs, both hard and soft

862b45026f manual: Update _DEFAULT_SOURCE. [BZ #22862]
The description of the interplay between feature test macros and
compiler options in the description of _DEFAULT_SOURCE is a little
confusing, and dated, so clarify the situation, and don't assume a
specific value for _DEFAULT_SOURCE.

Also, _DEFAULT_SOURCE is supposed to be defined if none of the C/POSIX
feature test macros are defined, but the condition was lacking a test
for _ISOC11_SOURCE, so that is also addressed.

db9881ecd7 Document use of CC and CFLAGS in more detail (bug 20980, bug 21234).
There are some bug reports from people setting CFLAGS not including a
-O option and then being confused when the build fails. This patch
addresses this by documenting the proper use of CC and CFLAGS in more
detail - saying what options should go where and specifying the
requirement to compile with optimization.

The previous text incorrectly used @var markup with CC and CFLAGS.
The correct markup for environment variables is @env, but it's also
the case that passing such variables explicitly on the configure
command line is preferred to passing them in the environment, so this
patch changes the documentation to describe passing them on the
command line (and uses @code).

In many cases putting options in the wrong place may in fact work, but
I believe what I've specified is the correct rule for which options to
put where.

	requirement to compile with optimization.

c3d466cba1 Remove slow paths from pow
Remove the slow paths from pow. Like several other double precision math
functions, pow is exactly rounded. This is not required from math functions
and causes major overheads as it requires multiple fallbacks using higher
precision arithmetic if a result is close to 0.5ULP. Ridiculous slowdowns
of up to 100000x have been reported when the highest precision path triggers.

All GLIBC math tests pass on AArch64 and x64 (with ULP of pow set to 1).
The worst case error is ~0.506ULP. A simple test over a few hundred million
values shows pow is 10% faster on average. This fixes BZ #13932.

d8742dd82f Add narrowing add functions.
This patch adds the narrowing add functions from TS 18661-1 to glibc's
libm: fadd, faddl, daddl, f32addf64, f32addf32x, f32xaddf64 for all
configurations; f32addf64x, f32addf128, f64addf64x, f64addf128,
f32xaddf64x, f32xaddf128, f64xaddf128 for configurations with
_Float64x and _Float128; __nldbl_daddl for ldbl-opt. As discussed for
the build infrastructure patch, tgmath.h support is deliberately
deferred, and FP_FAST_* macros are not applicable without optimized
function implementations.

Function implementations are added for all relevant pairs of formats
(including certain cases of a format and itself where more than one
type has that format). The main implementations use round-to-odd, or
a trivial computation in the case where both formats are the same or
where the wider format is IBM long double (in which case we don't
attempt to be correctly rounding). The sysdeps/ieee754/soft-fp
implementations use soft-fp, and are used automatically for
configurations without exceptions and rounding modes by virtue of
existing Implies files. As previously discussed, optimized versions
for particular architectures are possible, but not included.

i386 gets a special version of f32xaddf64 to avoid problems with
double rounding (similar to the existing fdim version), since this
function must round just once without an intermediate rounding to long
double. (No such special version is needed for any other function,
because the nontrivial functions use round-to-odd, which does the
intermediate computation with the rounding mode set to round-to-zero,
and double rounding is OK except in round-to-nearest mode, so is OK
for that intermediate round-to-zero computation.) mul and div will
need slightly different special versions for i386 (using round-to-odd
on long double instead of precision control) because of the
possibility of inexact intermediate results in the subnormal range for
double.

To reduce duplication among the different function implementations,
math-narrow.h gets macros CHECK_NARROW_ADD, NARROW_ADD_ROUND_TO_ODD
and NARROW_ADD_TRIVIAL.

In the trivial cases and for any architecture-specific optimized
implementations, the overhead of the errno setting might be
significant, but I think that's best handled through compiler built-in
functions rather than providing separate no-errno versions in glibc
(and likewise there are no __*_finite entry points for these function
provided, __*_finite effectively being no-errno versions at present in
most cases).

Tested for x86_64 and x86, with both GCC 6 and GCC 7. Tested for
mips64 (all three ABIs, both hard and soft float) and powerpc with GCC
7. Tested with build-many-glibcs.py with both GCC 6 and GCC 7.

A number of cross-references to the GCC info manual cause Texinfo
warnings; e.g.:

./creature.texi:11: warning: @xref node name should not contain `.'

This is due to "gcc.info" being used in the INFO-FILE-NAME (fourth)

b7c83ca30e Remove slow paths from log
Remove the slow paths from log. Like several other double precision math
functions, log is exactly rounded. This is not required from math functions
and causes major overheads as it requires multiple fallbacks using higher
precision arithmetic if a result is close to 0.5ULP. Ridiculous slowdowns
of up to 100000x have been reported when the highest precision path triggers.

Interestingly removing the slow paths makes hardly any difference in practice:
the worst case error is still ~0.502ULP, and exp(log(x)) shows identical results
before/after on many millions of random cases. All GLIBC math tests pass on
AArch64 and x64 with no change in ULP error. A simple test over a few hundred
million values shows log is now 18% faster on average.

6fd0a3c6a8 Improve __ieee754_exp() performance by greater than 5x on sparc/x86.
These changes will be active for all platforms that don't provide
their own exp() routines. They will also be active for ieee754
versions of ccos, ccosh, cosh, csin, csinh, sinh, exp10, gamma, and
erf.

Typical performance gains is typically around 5x when measured on
Sparc s7 for common values between exp(1) and exp(40).

Using the glibc perf tests on sparc,
      sparc (nsec) x86 (nsec)
      old new old new
max 17629 395 5173 144
min 399 54 15 13
mean 5317 200 1349 23

The extreme max times for the old (ieee754) exp are due to the
multiprecision computation in the old algorithm when the true value is
very near 0.5 ulp away from an value representable in double
precision. The new algorithm does not take special measures for those
cases. The current glibc exp perf tests overrepresent those values.
Informal testing suggests approximately one in 200 cases might
invoke the high cost computation. The performance advantage of the new
algorithm for other values is still large but not as large as indicated
by the chart above.

Glibc correctness tests for exp() and expf() were run. Within the
test suite 3 input values were found to cause 1 bit differences (ulp)
when "FE_TONEAREST" rounding mode is set. No differences in exp() were
seen for the tested values for the other rounding modes.
Typical example:
exp(-0x1.760cd2p+0) (-1.46113312244415283203125)
 new code: 2.31973271630014299393707e-01 0x1.db14cd799387ap-3
 old code: 2.31973271630014271638132e-01 0x1.db14cd7993879p-3
    exp    =  2.31973271630014285508337 (high precision)
Old delta: off by 0.49 ulp
New delta: off by 0.51 ulp

In addition, because ieee754_exp() is used by other routines, cexp()
showed test results with very small imaginary input values where the
imaginary portion of the result was off by 3 ulp when in upward
rounding mode, but not in the other rounding modes. For x86, tgamma
showed a few values where the ulp increased to 6 (max ulp for tgamma
is 5). Sparc tgamma did not show these failures. I presume the tgamma
differences are due to compiler optimization differences within the
gamma function. The gamma function is known to be difficult to compute
accurately.

9d7a3741c9 Add --enable-static-pie configure option to build static PIE [BZ #19574]
Static PIE extends address space layout randomization to static
executables. It provides additional security hardening benefits at
the cost of some memory and performance.

Dynamic linker, ld.so, is a standalone program which can be loaded at
any address. This patch adds a configure option, --enable-static-pie,
to embed the part of ld.so in static executable to create static position
independent executable (static PIE). A static PIE is similar to static
executable, but can be loaded at any address without help from a dynamic
linker. When --enable-static-pie is used to configure glibc, libc.a is
built as PIE and all static executables, including tests, are built as
static PIE. The resulting libc.a can be used together with GCC 8 or
above to build static PIE with the compiler option, -static-pie. But
GCC 8 isn't required to build glibc with --enable-static-pie. Only GCC
with PIE support is needed. When an older GCC is used to build glibc
with --enable-static-pie, proper input files are passed to linker to
create static executables as static PIE, together with "-z text" to
prevent dynamic relocations in read-only segments, which are not allowed
in static PIE.

The following changes are made for static PIE:

1. Add a new function, _dl_relocate_static_pie, to:
   a. Get the run-time load address.
   b. Read the dynamic section.
   c. Perform dynamic relocations.
Dynamic linker also performs these steps. But static PIE doesn't load
any shared objects.
2. Call _dl_relocate_static_pie at entrance of LIBC_START_MAIN in
libc.a. crt1.o, which is used to create dynamic and non-PIE static
executables, is updated to include a dummy _dl_relocate_static_pie.
rcrt1.o is added to create static PIE, which will link in the real
_dl_relocate_static_pie. grcrt1.o is also added to create static PIE
with -pg. GCC 8 has been updated to support rcrt1.o and grcrt1.o for
static PIE.

Static PIE can work on all architectures which support PIE, provided:

1. Target must support accessing of local functions without dynamic
relocations, which is needed in start.S to call __libc_start_main with
function addresses of __libc_csu_init, __libc_csu_fini and main. All
functions in static PIE are local functions. If PIE start.S can't reach
main () defined in a shared object, the code sequence:

pass address of local_main to __libc_start_main
	...

local_main:
tail call to main via PLT

can be used.
2. start.S is updated to check PIC instead SHARED for PIC code path and
avoid dynamic relocation, when PIC is defined and SHARED isn't defined,
to support static PIE.
3. All assembly codes are updated check PIC instead SHARED for PIC code
path to avoid dynamic relocations in read-only sections.
4. All assembly codes are updated check SHARED instead PIC for static
symbol name.
5. elf_machine_load_address in dl-machine.h are updated to support static
PIE.
6. __brk works without TLS nor dynamic relocations in read-only section
so that it can be used by __libc_setup_tls to initializes TLS in static
PIE.

NB: When glibc is built with GCC defaulted to PIE, libc.a is compiled
with -fPIE, regardless if --enable-static-pie is used to configure glibc.
When glibc is configured with --enable-static-pie, libc.a is compiled
with -fPIE, regardless whether GCC defaults to PIE or not. The same
libc.a can be used to build both static executable and static PIE.
There is no need for separate PIE copy of libc.a.

On x86-64, the normal static sln:

text data bss dec hex	filename
 625425 8284 5456 639165 9c0bd	elf/sln

the static PIE sln:

text data bss dec hex	filename
 657626 20636 5392 683654 a6e86	elf/sln

The code size is increased by 5% and the binary size is increased by 7%.

Linker requirements to build glibc with --enable-static-pie:

1. Linker supports --no-dynamic-linker to remove PT_INTERP segment from
static PIE.
2. Linker can create working static PIE. The x86-64 linker needs the
fix for

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21782

The i386 linker needs to be able to convert "movl main@GOT(%ebx), %eax"
to "leal main@GOTOFF(%ebx), %eax" if main is defined locally.

Binutils 2.29 or above are OK for i686 and x86-64. But linker status for
other targets need to be verified.

3. Linker should resolve undefined weak symbols to 0 in static PIE:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22269

4. Many ELF backend linkers incorrectly check bfd_link_pic for TLS
relocations, which should check bfd_link_executable instead:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22263

Tested on aarch64, i686 and x86-64.

8df5d34720 Remove --with-fp / --without-fp.
There is a configure option --without-fp that specifies that nofpu
sysdeps directories should be used instead of fpu directories.

For most glibc configurations, this option is of no use: either there
is no valid nofpu variant of that configuration, or there are no fpu
or nofpu sysdeps directories for that processor and so the option does
nothing. For a few configurations, if you are using a soft-float
compiler this option is required, and failing to use it generally
results in compilation errors from inline asm using unavailable
floating-point instructions.

We're moving away from --with-cpu to configuring glibc based on how
the compiler generates code, and it is natural to do so for
--without-fp as well; in most cases the soft-float and hard-float ABIs
are incompatible so you have no hope of building a working glibc with
an inappropriately configured compiler or libgcc.

This patch eliminates --without-fp, replacing it entirely by automatic
configuration based on the compiler. Configurations for which this is
relevant (coldfire / mips / powerpc32 / sh) define a variable
with_fp_cond in their preconfigure fragments (under the same
conditions under which those fragments do anything); this is a
preprocessor conditional which the toplevel configure script then uses
in a test to determine which sysdeps directories to use.

The config.make with-fp variable remains. It's used only by powerpc
(sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/Makefile) to add -mhard-float to various
flags variables. For powerpc, -mcpu= options can imply use of
soft-float. That could be an issue if you want to build for
e.g. 476fp, but are using --with-cpu=476 because there isn't a 476fp
sysdeps directory. If in future we eliminate --with-cpu and replace
it entirely by testing the compiler, it would be natural at that point
to eliminate that code as well (as the user should then just use a
compiler defaulting to 476fp and the 476 sysdeps directory would be
used automatically).

Tested for x86_64, and tested with build-many-glibcs.py that installed
shared libraries are unchanged by this patch.

0d93b7fd7c Add _Float64, _Float32x function aliases.
This patch continues filling out TS 18661-3 support by adding *f64 and
*f32x function aliases, supporting _Float64 and _Float32x, as aliases
for double functions. These types are supported for all glibc
configurations. The API corresponds exactly to that for _Float128 and
_Float64x. _Float32 aliases to float functions remain to be added in
subsequent patches to complete this process (then there are a few
miscellaneous functions in TS 18661-3 to implement that aren't simply
versions of existing functions for new types).

The patch enables the feature in bits/floatn-common.h, adds symbol
versions and documentation with updates to ABI baselines, and arranges
for the libm functions for the new types to be tested. As with the
_Float64x changes there are some x86 ulps updates because of header
inlines not used for the new types (and one other change to the
non-multiarch libm-test-ulps, which I suppose comes from using a
different compiler version / configuration from when it was last
regenerated).

Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py, with both
GCC 6 and GCC 7.

07ed18d26a Add elision tunables
This patch adds several new tunables to control the behavior of
elision on supported platforms[1]. Since elision now depends
on tunables, we should always *compile* with elision enabled,
and leave the code disabled, but available for runtime
selection. This gives us *much* better compile-time testing of
the existing code to avoid bit-rot[2].

Tested on ppc, ppc64, ppc64le, s390x and x86_64.

[1] This part of the patch was initially proposed by
Paul Murphy but was "staled" because the framework have changed
since the patch was originally proposed:

https://patchwork.sourceware.org/patch/10342/

[2] This part of the patch was inititally proposed as a RFC by
Carlos O'Donnell. Make sense to me integrate this on the patch:

446d22e91d Linux: Implement interfaces for memory protection keys
This adds system call wrappers for pkey_alloc, pkey_free, pkey_mprotect,
and x86-64 implementations of pkey_get and pkey_set, which abstract over
the PKRU CPU register and hide the actual number of memory protection
keys supported by the CPU. pkey_mprotect with a -1 key is implemented
using mprotect, so it will work even if the kernel does not support the
pkey_mprotect system call.

The system call wrapers use unsigned int instead of unsigned long for
parameters, so that no special treatment for x32 is needed. The flags
argument is currently unused, and the access rights bit mask is limited
to two bits by the current PKRU register layout anyway.

1faaf7035c plural.c: improve reproducibility
There is a subtle non-determinism when building glibc.
This depends on whether the glibc is built using the distibuted
file intl/plural.c or built using the generated file intl/plural.c.
These two files (intl/plural.c generated vs. distributed) are slightly
different, hence we may end up with slightly different libraries.

Originally, having "bison" installed was optional. So if "bison" was
not present, we always built libraries with the distributed plural.c.
If bison was installed, we *** may have *** replaced the distributed
file plural.c with a new plural.c generated from plural.y. if the
timestamps triggered this rule:

plural.c plural.y
	$(BISON) $(BISONFLAGS) $@ $^

Given that timestamps are not preserved in GIT repositories, the above
rule is not reliable without explicitly touching plural.c or plural.y.
In other words, the rule may or may not have fired.

In summary: there are two distinct sources of non-determinism:

1. Having "bison" installed or not
2. Having "bison" installed but timestamps poorly defined.

This patch fixes this by requiring "bison" being installed
and by always generating intl/plural.c from intl/plural.y.
(This is achieved by simply removing checked-in intl/plural.c)

	* configure.ac (BISON): Require to be present.
	* configure: Regenerated.
	* intl/Makefile (generated): Add plural.c.
[$(BISON) != no]: Make code unconditional.
	(plural.c): Change rule to $(objpfx)plural.c.
	($(objpfx)plural.o): Depend on $(objpfx)plural.c.
	* intl/plural.c: Remove.
	* manual/install.texi (Tools for Compilation): Document bison as
	required.
	* INSTALL: Regenerated.

a23aa5b727 Add _Float64x function aliases.
This patch continues filling out TS 18661-3 support by adding *f64x
function aliases on platforms with _Float64x support. (It so happens
the set of such platforms is exactly the same as the set of platforms
with _Float128 support, although on x86_64, x86 and ia32 the _Float64x
format is Intel extended rather than binary128.) The API provided
corresponds exactly to that provided for _Float128, mostly coming from
TS 18661-3. As these functions always alias those for another type
(long double, _Float128 or both), __* function names are not provided,
as in other cases of alias types.

Given the preparation done in previous patches, this one just enables
the feature via Makeconfig and bits/floatn.h, adds symbol versions,
and updates documentation and ABI baselines. The symbol versions are
present unconditionally as GLIBC_2.27 in the relevant Versions files,
as it's OK for those to specify versions for functions that may not be
present in some configurations; no additional complexity is needed
unless in future some configuration gains support for this type that
didn't have such support in 2.27. The Makeconfig additions for ia64
and x86 aren't strictly needed, as those configurations also get
float64x-alias-fcts definitions from
sysdeps/ieee754/float128/Makeconfig, but still seem appropriate given
that _Float64x is not _Float128 for those configurations.

A libm-test-ulps update for x86 is included. This is because
bits/mathinline.h does not have _Float64x support added and for two
functions the use of out-of-line functions results in increased ulps
(ifloat64x shares ulps with ildouble / ifloat128 as appropriate).
Given that we'd like generally to eliminate bits/mathinline.h
optimizations, preferring to have such optimizations in GCC instead,
it seems reasonable not to add such support there for new types. GCC
support for _FloatN / _FloatNx built-in functions is limited, but has
been improved in GCC 8, and at some point I hope the full set of libm
built-in functions in GCC, and other optimizations with
per-floating-type aspects, will be enabled for all _FloatN / _FloatNx
types.

Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py, with both
GCC 6 and GCC 7.

59d2cbb1fe Linux: Add memfd_create system call wrapper
The system call is somewhat obscure because it is closely related
to file descriptor sealing. However, it is also the recommended
way to create alias mappings, which is why it has more general use.

No emulation is provided. Except for the name of the
/proc/self/fd links, it would be possible to implement an
approximation using O_TMPFILE and tmpfs, but this does not appear
to be worth the added complexity.
