0bbd2b1ad0 Re: Bug 23686, two segment faults in nm
The fix for pr23686 had a hole in the reloc address sanity check,
the calculation could overflow. Note that stabsize is known to be a
non-zero multiple of 12 so stabsize - 4 can't underflow.

	PR 23686
	* syms.c (_bfd_stab_section_find_nearest_line): Correct
	r->address sanity check.

717d4bd6d1 Generated docs and include files
bfd/doc/chew.c extracts documentation from source code comments
annotated with keywords, and generates much of bfd.h and libbfd.h from
those same comments. The docs have suffered from people (me too)
adding things like CODE_FRAGMENT to the source to put code into bfd.h
without realising that CODE_FRAGMENT also puts @example around said
code into the docs. So we have random senseless things in the docs.
This patch fixes that problem (well, the senseless things from
CODE_FRAGMENT), moves most of the code out of bfd-in.h, and improves a
few chew.c features. libbfd.h now automatically gets ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN
prototypes, and indentation in bfd.h and libbfd.h is better.

b8e81f19cb Use @deftypefn in chew output
When reading the BFD info manual, function definitions looked very
strange to me:

    *Synopsis*
	 long bfd_get_mtime (bfd *abfd);
       *Description*
    Return the file modification time (as read from the file system, or from
    the archive header for archive members).

The *Synopsis* and *Description* text in particular is very un-info-like.

To fix this, I tried removing the *Synopsis* text and having FUNCTION
use @deftypefn instead. However, this ended up requiring some new
state, because SYNOPSIS can appear without FUNCTION. This in turn
required "catstrif" (I considered adding FORTH-style if-else-then, but
in the end decided on an ad hoc approach).

After this the result looks like:

 -- Function: long bfd_get_mtime (bfd *abfd);
     Return the file modification time (as read from the file system, or
     from the archive header for archive members).

This patch also reorders a few documentation comments to ensure that
SYNOPSIS comes before DESCRIPTION. This is the more common style and
is also now required by doc.str.

	* syms.c (bfd_decode_symclass, bfd_is_undefined_symclass)
	(bfd_symbol_info): Reorder documentation comment.
	* doc/doc.str (synopsis_seen): New variable.
	(SYNOPSIS): Set synopsis_seen.  Emit @deftypefn.
	(DESCRIPTION): Use synopsis_seen.
	* doc/chew.c (catstrif): New function.
	(main): Add catstrif intrinsic.
	(compile): Recognize "variable" command.

d87bef3a7b Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

f3bc603561 stab nearest_line bfd_malloc_and_get_section
bfd_malloc_and_get_section performs some sanity checks on the section
size before allocating memory. This patch avails the stab
nearest_line code of that sanity checking, and tidies up memory
afterward.

	* coffgen.c (_bfd_coff_close_and_cleanup): Call _bfd_stab_cleanup.
	* elf.c (_bfd_elf_close_and_cleanup): Likewise.
	* syms.c (_bfd_stab_section_find_nearest_line): Set *pinfo earlier.
	Use bfd_malloc_and_get_section. Free malloc'd buffers on failure.
	Malloc indextable.
	(_bfd_stab_cleanup): New function.

	* libbfd.h: Regnerate.

6e7a29c7de bfd: Add bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt functions like bfd_find_nearest_line with
the addition of a parameter for specifying the filename of a supplementary
debug file such as one referenced by .gnu_debugaltlink or .debug_sup.

This patch focuses on implementing bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
support for ELF/DWARF2 .gnu_debugaltlink. For other targets this
function simply sets the invalid_operation bfd_error.

57698478b7 Don't encode reloc.size
I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout
r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which
should have been encoded as 3). Toss all that out, just use a byte

make the code independent of how reloc.size is encoded.

d1bcae833b ELF: Don't generate unused section symbols
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations.
With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused
section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are

With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes
Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes

The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB.

Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be
included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set
if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is
always included in the symbol table.

Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused
section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS
is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed.

Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to:

1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE.
2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend.
3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker
outputs.

4d1823674e PR26389, nm prints "c" for a common symbol with -flto and -fcommon
git commit 49d9fd42ac chose to make nm print 'C' for the normal
common section, and 'c' for other commons. This was an attempt to
make common symbols in .scommon and other small common sections show
a 'c' type without a section name comparison, but it failed for
nm --plugin on lto objects where normal common symbols are stashed in
a "plug" section. It's also wrong for large common symbols. So
instead set SEC_SMALL_DATA on sections created for small commons, and
key off that flag to show 'c' type. If your ELF target doesn't have
an elf_backend_symbol_processing function, then you won't see 'c' for
symbols in .scommon.

Note that due to bfd_decode_symclass decoding common symbols without
a chance for coff_section_type to treat .scommon specially, then
having .scommon in the array of special sections handled by
coff_section_type prior to 49d9fd42ac was entirely ineffective.
That fact escaped me when writing 49d9fd42ac. Unless .scommon
didn't have SEC_IS_COMMON set, which would be a little weird.

986f078366 bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many
places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are
lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use
size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A
32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and
processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some
of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There
no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically
all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't
need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have
something like
  symcount * sizeof (void *)
when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that
this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is
larger by far than that of a pointer.

bb2942085c Pass section when available to bfd_octets_per_byte
and other tidies. I think it's better to default to passing the
section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't
make a difference.

A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly,
not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer. As it happens,
the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to
one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour. However, it is
wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new
target. Besides fixing that, the patch also defines OCTETS_PER_BYTE
as one in target files where that is appropriate.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

a288c27099 PR24511, nm should not mark symbols in .init_array as "t"
This patch restricts the section names matched in coff_section_type,
a function that translates section names to symbol type, and arranges
to translate section flags to symbol type before looking at names.
The latter change resulted in various test failures due to improper
section flags being used in tests, and by the plugin support, so fix
that too.

The new test fails on many ELF targets that lack .init/fini_array
in their scripts. I've just xfailed those. pru-elf oddly defines
__init_array_begin rather than __init_array_start.  I've left that
target as a FAIL, and pj-elf too which reports an error for undefined
weak symbols.

	PR 24511
	* syms.c (coff_section_type): Only allow '.', '$' and numeric
	following the standard section names.
	(bfd_decode_symclass): Prioritize section flag tests in

d00dd7dc5e Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target
structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub
functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their
parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The
latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of
bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in
elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol.

b8871f357f Properly implement STT_COMMON
The BFD configure option, --enable-elf-stt-common, can't be to used to
verify STT_COMMON implementation with the normal binutils build. Instead,
this patch removes it from BFD. It adds --elf-stt-common=[no|yes] to ELF
assembler/objcopy and adds -z common/-z nocommon to ld.

A configure option, --enable-elf-stt-common, is added to gas to specify
whether ELF assembler should generate common symbols with the STT_COMMON
type by default.

Since BSF_KEEP_G is never used, it is renamed to BSF_ELF_COMMON for ELF
common symbols.
