gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field. Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (TYPE_FIELD): Remove. Replace all uses with type::field. |

gdb: add type::fields / type::set_fields
Add the `fields` and `set_fields` methods on `struct type`, in order to remove the `TYPE_FIELDS` macro. In this patch, the `TYPE_FIELDS` macro is changed to the `type::fields`, so all the call sites that use it to set the fields array are changed to use `type::set_fields`. The next patch will remove `TYPE_FIELDS` entirely. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (struct type) <fields, set_fields>: New methods. (TYPE_FIELDS): Use type::fields. Change all call sites that modify the propery to use type::set_fields instead. Change-Id: I05174ce68f2ce3fccdf5d8b469ff141f14886b33 |

gdb: remove TYPE_NFIELDS macro
Remove `TYPE_NFIELDS`, changing all the call sites to use `type::num_fields` directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed and coccinelle. gdb: add type::num_fields / type::set_num_fields
Add the `num_fields` and `set_num_fields` methods on `struct type`, in order to remove the `TYPE_NFIELDS` macro. In this patch, the `TYPE_NFIELDS` macro is changed to use `type::num_fields`, so all the call sites that are used to set the number of fields are changed to use `type::set_num_fields`. The next patch will remove `TYPE_NFIELDS` completely. I think that in the future, we should consider making the interface of `struct type` better. For example, right now it's possible for the number of fields property and the actual number of fields set to be out of sync. However, I want to keep the existing behavior in this patch, just translate from macros to methods. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (struct type) <num_fields, set_num_fields>: New methods. (TYPE_NFIELDS): Use type::num_fields. Change all call sites that modify the number of fields to use type::set_num_fields instead. Change-Id: I5ad9de5be4097feaf942d111077434bf91d13dc5 |

gdb: remove unnecessary NULL checks before xfree
I was inspired by a series of patches merged by Alan Modra in the other projects, so I did the same in GDB with a bit of Coccinelle and grep. This patch removes the unnecessary NULL checks before calls to xfree. They are unnecessary because xfree already does a NULL check. Since free is supposed to handle NULL values correctly, the NULL check in xfree itself is also questionable, but I've left it there for now. gdb/ChangeLog: * coffread.c (patch_type): Remove NULL check before xfree. * corefile.c (set_gnutarget): Likewise. * cp-abi.c (set_cp_abi_as_auto_default): Likewise. * exec.c (build_section_table): Likewise. * remote.c (remote_target::pass_signals): Likewise. * utils.c (n_spaces): Likewise. * cli/cli-script.c (document_command): Likewise. * i386-windows-tdep.c (core_process_module_section): Likewise. * linux-fork.c (struct fork_info) <~fork_info>: Likewise. |

Change get_objfile_arch to a method on objfile
This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method, objfile::arch. To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol reading. gdb: introduce objfile text_section_offset and data_section_offset methods
The pattern objfile->section_offsets[SECT_OFF_TEXT (objfile)] ... appears very often, to get the offset of the text section of an objfile. I thought it would be more readable to write it as: objfile->text_section_offset () ... so I added this method and used it where possible. I also added data_section_offset, although it is not used as much. gdb/ChangeLog: * objfiles.h (ALL_OBJFILE_OSECTIONS): Move up. (SECT_OFF_DATA): Likewise. (SECT_OFF_RODATA): Likewise. gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

Change section_offsets to a std::vector
This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros. Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird things. objfile_relocate did: - std::vector<struct section_offsets> - new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections)); ... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements needed. This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset: - std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections, - { { offset } }); ... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of vector type. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-01-08 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * xcoffread.c (enter_line_range, read_xcoff_symtab) (process_xcoff_symbol, xcoff_symfile_offsets): Update. * symtab.h (MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS): Update. Change some arguments to gdb::string_view instead of name+len
Just some code cleanup. This change has a few benefits: - Shorter argument list in the functions - If the caller needs to calculate the string, they no longer need to explicitly call strlen - It is easy to pass std::string to this (done in one place currently) This also updates a couple of places that were passing 0/1 to a bool parameter. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-10-29 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * coffread.c (record_minimal_symbol): Update. Change SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS to be an rvalue

bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. Delay allocation of dbx_symfile_info
I noticed that elfread.c always allocates a dbx_symfile_info, even though this is only ever needed in the unusual case of reading stabs in ELF. Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files. |

Avoid internal errors when stepping outside 'main' on MinGW
When one steps with "next" past the 'main's 'return' statement in MinGW programs built by mingw.org's tools, PC lands in a function whose symbol is not in any symtab. GDB then looks up the nearest symbol, and should find none, because all those with addresses below PC are not real functions. Having unresolved symbols, whose address is zero, in minsyms tricked GDB into using these bogus symbols, which then caused assertion violation and internal_error. See the discussion at https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-12/msg00176.html for more details. gdb/ChangeLog 2018-12-28 Eli Zaretskii <eliz@gnu.org> * coffread.c (coff_symtab_read): Don't record in minsyms symbols that are unresolved. This avoids triggering an internal error when stepping outside of 'main' in MinGW programs. |

Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A few standard approaches are used here: * Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable; * Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash; * Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash, including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header. I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined. gdb/ChangeLog 2018-10-04 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * ctf.c (SET_ARRAY_FIELD): Rename "u32". * p-valprint.c (pascal_val_print): Split inner "i" variable. * xtensa-tdep.c (xtensa_push_dummy_call): Declare "i" in loop header. * xstormy16-tdep.c (xstormy16_push_dummy_call): Declare "val" in more inner scope. * xcoffread.c (read_xcoff_symtab): Rename inner "symbol". * varobj.c (varobj_update): Rename inner "newobj", "type_changed". * valprint.c (generic_emit_char): Rename inner "buf". * valops.c (find_overload_match): Rename inner "temp". Introduce buildsym-legacy.h
This introduces a new header, buildsym-legacy.h, and changes all the symbol readers to use it. The idea is to put the function-based interface, that relies on the buildsym_compunit global, into a separate header.
