5226a6a892 Change the linker's heuristic for computing the entry point for binaries so that shared libraries default to an entry point of 0.
* ldlang.c (lang_end): When computing the entry point, only
	try the start address of the entry section when creating an
	executable.

ab4f385b3c Deprecate a.out support for NetBSD targets.
As discussed previously, a.out support is now quite deprecated, and in
some cases removed, in both Binutils itself and NetBSD, so this legacy
default makes little sense. `netbsdelf*` and `netbsdaout*` still work
allowing the user to be explicit about there choice. Additionally, the
configure script warns about the change as Nick Clifton requested.

One possible concern was the status of NetBSD on NS32K, where only a.out
was supported. But per [1] NetBSD has removed support, and if it were to
come back, it would be with ELF. The binutils implementation is
therefore marked obsolete, per the instructions in the last message.

With that patch and this one applied, I have confirmed the following:

--target=i686-unknown-netbsd
--target=i686-unknown-netbsdelf
  builds completely

--target=i686-unknown-netbsdaout
  properly fails because target is deprecated.

--target=vax-unknown-netbsdaout builds completely except for gas, where
the target is deprecated.

84139c5864 arm: fix fallout from recent thumb2 detection patch
The recent change to correct the detection of thumb2 object files
resulted in a ld test for veneering starting to fail.  The problem was
the test itself, which was incorrectly expecting thumb1 type far-call
veneers instead of the thumb2 flavour.  We already have a dump file of
the expected form, so the fix is to change the expected output
accordingly.

95c210664d AArch64: Relax thumb-plt testcases regexpr.
The regexpr in these two files are a bit strict in that they don't account for
the slight changes in tags in certain arm targets which cause our address
offsets to change.   This changes the tests to allow slight movement in
locations while still strictly checking the rest.

0942c7ab94 Change readelf's display of symbol names (when not in --wide mode) so that if they are going to be truncated then "[...]" is displayed at the end. Add a comment line option to disable this enhancement and restore the old behaviour.

10ca4b042d readelf: Consolidate --syms --use-dynamic with --dyn-syms
When reconstructing dynamic symbol table from the PT_DYNAMIC segment,
compute dynamic symbol table size from hash table.  For DT_HASH, the
number of dynamic symbol table entries equals the number of chains.
For DT_GNU_HASH/DT_MIPS_XHASH, only defined symbols with non-STB_LOCAL
indings are in hash table.  Since DT_GNU_HASH/DT_MIPS_XHASH place all
symbols with STB_LOCAL binding before symbols with other bindings and
all undefined symbols defined ones in dynamic symbol table, the highest
symbol index in DT_GNU_HASH/DT_MIPS_XHASH is the highest dynamic symbol
table index.

Rewrite print_dynamic_symbol to dump dynamic symbol table for --dyn-syms
and --syms --use-dynamic.

3ce23ca1de Arm: Skip Thumb2 PLT tests on NaCL.
NaCL does not support dynamic linking and so these tests should be
skipped under it.

a7618269b7 Arm: Fix LSB of GOT for Thumb2 only PLT.
When you have a Thumb only PLT then the address in the GOT for PLT0 needs to
have the Thumb bit set since the instruction used in PLTn to get there is
`ldr.w	pc` which is an inter-working instruction:

15ccbdd717 Arm: Fix thumb2 PLT branch offsets.
When I previously changed these offsets I had incorrectly used an offset of -2
for this Thumb2 PLT.  Unfortunately because we had no tests for this PLT I had
missed that the result was incorrect.

This patch fixes the offset to PC .-4 so that it correctly addresses the
previous instruction and adds a test for this PLT stub.

b4e87f2c1e Arm: Fix performance issue with thumb-2 tailcalls
We currently use a padding NOP after a Thumb to Arm interworking veneer (BX pc).
The NOP is never executed but may result in a performance penalty on some cores.

For this reason this patch changes the NOPs after Thumb to Arm veneers into B .-2
and adds a note to this in the source code for future reference.

This file is compiled and linked with "-march=armv8-m.main -mfloat-abi=hard

-Wl,--section-start,.gnu.sgstubs=0x190000 -ffunction-sections
-fdata-sections
-Wl,--gc-sections -g" options to generate an executable.

The executable generated does not contain any debug information of these
secure entry functions even though it contains secure entry functions in
the .text section.  This patch fixes this problem.

796d6298bb Arm: Fix Arm disassembler mapping symbol search.
Similar to the AArch64 patches the Arm disassembler has the same issues with
out of order sections but also a few short comings.

For one thing there are multiple code blocks to determine mapping symbols, and
they all work slightly different, and neither fully correct.  The first thing
this patch does is centralise the mapping symbols search into one function
mapping_symbol_for_insn.  This function is then updated to perform a search in
a similar way as AArch64.

Their used to be a value has_mapping_symbols which was used to determine the
default disassembly for objects that have no mapping symbols.  The problem with
the approach was that it was determining this value in the same loop that needed
it, which is why this field could take on the states -1, 0, 1 where -1 means
"don't know".  However this means that until you actually find a mapping symbol
or reach the end of the disassembly glob, you don't know if you did the right
action or not, and if you didn't you can't correct it anymore.

This is why the two jump-reloc-veneers-* testcases end up disassembling some
insn as data when they shouldn't.

Out of order here refers to an object file where sections are not listed in a
monotonic increasing VMA order.

The ELF ABI for Arm [1] specifies the following for mapping symbols:

  1) A text section must always have a corresponding mapping symbol at it's
     start.
  2) Data sections do not require any mapping symbols.
  3) The range of a mapping symbol extends from the address it starts on up to
     the next mapping symbol (exclusive) or section end (inclusive).

However there is no defined order between a symbol and it's corresponding
mapping symbol in the symbol table.  This means that while in general we look
up for a corresponding mapping symbol, we have to make at least one check of
the symbol below the address being disassembled.

When disassembling different PCs within the same section, the search for mapping
symbol can be cached somewhat.  We know that the mapping symbol corresponding to
the current PC is either the previous one used, or one at the same address as
the current PC.

However this optimization and mapping symbol search must stop as soon as we
reach the end or start of the section.  Furthermore if we're only disassembling
a part of a section, the search is a allowed to search further than the current
chunk, but is not allowed to search past it (The mapping symbol if there, must
be at the same address, so in practice we usually stop at PC+4).

lastly, since only data sections don't require a mapping symbol the default
mapping type should be DATA and not INSN as previously defined, however if the
binary has had all its symbols stripped than this isn't very useful.  To fix
this we determine the default based on the section flags.  This will allow the
disassembler to be more useful on stripped binaries.  If there is no section
than we assume you to be disassembling INSN.

c0c468d562 [ARM] Update bfd's Tag_CPU_arch knowledge
BFD's bfd_get_mach () function returns a bfd specific value representing
the architecture of the target which is populated from the Tag_CPU_arch
build attribute value of that target. Among other users of that
interfacem, objdump which uses it to print the architecture version of
the binary being examinated and to decide what instruction is available
if run with "-m arm" via its own mapping from bfd_mach_arm_X values to
feature bits available.

However, both BFD and objdump's most recent known architecture is
Armv5TE. When encountering a newer architecture bfd_get_mach will return
bfd_mach_arm_unknown. This is unfortunate since objdump uses that value
to allow all instructions on all architectures which is already what it
does by default, making the "-m arm" trick useless.

This patch updates BFD and objdump's knowledge of Arm architecture
versions up to the latest Armv8-M Baseline and Mainline, Armv8-R and
Armv8.4-A architectures. Since several architecture versions (eg. 8.X-A)
share the same Tag_CPU_arch build attribute value and
bfd_mach_arm values, the mapping from bfd machine value to feature bits
need to return the most featureful feature bits that would yield the
given bfd machine value otherwise some instruction would not disassemble
under "-m arm" mode. The patch rework that mapping to make this clearer
and simplify writing the mapping rules. In particular, for simplicity
all FPU instructions are allowed in all cases.

Finally, the patch also rewrite the cpu_arch_ver table in GAS to use the
TAG_CPU_ARCH_X macros rather than hardcode their value.

Many ELF targets arrange to emit a number of section symbols in
.dynsym for use by dynamic relocations.  This happens before the
dynamic relocations are output, and the need for those symbols
determined.  In most cases they are not needed.  A proper analysis of
the need for dynamic section symbols is target specific and tedious,
so this patch just excludes them in the obvious case when no
dynamic relocations are present.

The patch also runs the new pr23161 and pr23162 tests on more targets.

This also removes arm-netbsd (not arm-netbsdelf!), arm-openbsd, and
arm-riscix.  Those targets weren't on the obsolete list but they are
all aout, and it doesn't make all that much sense to remove arm-aout

This patch standardizes messages in ld, to better conform to the GNU
coding standard.  Besides issues of capitalization and full-stops,
I've
- Split up help messages for target options, so that adding a new
  option does not mean loss of translation for all the others.
- Embedded tabs have been removed, since a user might have tab stops
  set at other than 8 char intervals.
- Added missing program name (%P).  ld isn't the compiler.
- Put %F and %X first (and removed %X if %F was present).  These can
  go anywhere, but look silly in the m%Fiddle of a message, and
  choosing "%P%F:" in some messages but "%F%P:" in others leads to the
  likelihood of duplication in ld.pot.  Besides, the colon belongs

This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization.
I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very
unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to
allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very
unlikely to be 1 byte.

Then there are messages like this one:
"Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n"
I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ",
"there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n",
each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for
sentence construction in other languages.  For now I'm punting on this
one.

4062f504eb As Alan predicted at https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2017-10/msg00137.html the values in some Arm tests need updating after recent changes. These looked a bit spooky at first, but they are just a difference in the order we emit veneers and far jumps, so are not so scary after all.
Checked with an arm-none-eabi tester and an arm-none-linux-gnueabi tester with no issues.

6c699715f6 [ARM] PR ld/21402, only override the symbol dynamic decision on undefined weak symbol.
Similar as aarch64 backend, arm backend only overrides the decision on undefined
weak symbols. arm backend part already emits necessary relative relocation for
this case.

=== Context ===

This patch is part of a patch series to add support for ARMv8-R
architecture. Its purpose is to add support for ARMv8-R in the linker.

=== Patch description ===

This patch is composed of 3 changes:

1) The main change is the addition of the logic for merging a file whose
Tag_CPU_arch build attribute is 15 (ARMv8-R). Namely, all pre-ARMv8 are
merged into ARMv8-R as well as ARMv8-R itself. ARMv8-A (14) merges into
ARMv8-A. ARMv8-M Baseline (16) and Mainline (17) are not allowed to
merge merge with ARMv8-R. Note that merging only occurs if the two
profiles are identical or one is S (Application or Realtime) and the
other is R.

2) using_thumb_only, using_thumb2_bl, using_thumb2 and arch_has_arm_nop
are updated according to capabilities of ARMv8-R and their BFD_ASSERT
updated to reflect that the logic is valid for ARMv8-R.

3) 2 build attribute merging tests are added to test the first change.
