Alan Modra	af969b14ae	PR 30569, always call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections ... This largely mechanical patch is preparation for a followup patch. For quite some time I've thought that it would be useful to call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections even when no dynamic objects are seen by the linker. That's what this patch does, with some renaming. There are no functional changes to the linker, just a move of the dynobj test in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections to target backend functions, replacing the asserts/aborts already there. No doubt some of the current always_size_sections functions could be moved to size_dynamic_sections but I haven't made that change. Because both hooks are now always called, I have renamed always_size_sections to early_size_sections and size_dynamic_sections to late_size_sections. I condisdered calling late_size_sections plain size_sections, since this is the usual target dynamic section sizing hook, but decided that searching the sources for "size_sections" would then hit early_size_sections and other functions.	2024-04-02 10:32:04 +10:30

Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.	2024-01-04 22:58:12 +10:30

I've also left one in gold.h that is protected by GCC_VERSION < 4003. I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which should have been encoded as 3). Toss all that out, just use a byte size instead. The changes outside of reloc.c in this patch should make the code independent of how reloc.size is encoded. * reloc.c (struct reloc_howto_struct): Increase size field by one bit. Comment. (HOWTO_RSIZE): Don't encode size. (bfd_get_reloc_size): Adjust, and make it an inline function. (read_reloc, write_reloc): Adjust. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * aout-ns32k.c: Include libbfd.h. Alan Modra	c94cb02662	HOWTO size encoding ... This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. Simon Marchi	9bc8e54b1f	bfd: fix -Wunused errors with clang 13+ ... Clang 13 and 14 produce some -Wunused-but-set-{variable,parameter} for situations where gcc doesn't. In particular, when a variable is set and then used in a way to update its own value. For example, if `i` is only used in this way: int i = 2; i++; i = i + 1; gcc won't warn, but clang will. Fix all such errors found in an --enable-targets=all build. It would be important for somebody who knows what they're doing to just make sure that these variables can indeed be deleted, and that there a no cases where it's a bug, and the variable should actually be used. Alan Modra	0f68420117	elf_backend_relocate_section int vs. bfd_boolean ... This functions was changed to return an int in commit ece5ef6079 but since bfd_boolean was an int typedef I lazily left all the ELF relocate_section functions as returning bfd_boolean, except the SPU one. Alan Modra	6b728d3286	FIXME for merging of e_flags and .gnu.attributes ... Code in the linker, present before the addition of .gnu.attributes support, results in shared libraries not being considered by BFD when merging e_flags and .gnu.attributes from input files to the output. That doesn't seem correct to me, but I don't know enough about all the various ABIs to change the behaviour with any confidence. So this patch merely punts on dynamic objects in merge_private_bfd_data target functions, with a FIXME for maintainer attention. I haven't excluded shared libraries from being considered where the target merge_private_bfd_data (a) already has code dealing with shared libraries, or (b) where that function just sets the output to the most constraining arch/mach combination and other fairly trivial merges, or (c) when the target has no shared library linker support. In (a) are: arc, arm, aarch64, riscv, sparc. In (b) are: bpf, cris, csky, m32r, m68k, mn10300, nios2, tilegx, tilepro, vax, visium, xtensa. Alan Modra	986f078366	bfd_size_type to size_t ... bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is Alan Modra	fd3619828e	bfd_section_* macros ... This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32.
