s390: Do not replace brcth referencing undefined weak symbol
Branch Relative on Count High (brcth) is a conditional branch relative
instruction. It is not guaranteed that it only appears within loops
that sooner or later will take the branch. It may very well be used to
check a condition that will prevent the branch from ever being taken.
bfd/
* elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Do not replace brcth
referencing undefined weak symbol with a trap.
ld/
* testsuite/ld-s390/weakundef-1.s: Update test case accordingly.
* testsuite/ld-s390/weakundef-1.dd: Likewise.

IBM zSystems: Rewrite l(g)rl @GOTENT to larl for --no-pie
Regtested on s390x-redhat-linux. Rewriting l(g)rl @GOTENT to larl is unnecessarily guarded by bfd_link_pic(). There were no use cases for this in the past, but since recently the Linux Kernel on s390x is compiled with -fPIE and linked with --no-pie. Remove the unnecessary bfd_link_pic() check. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Don't check for bfd_link_pic() when rewriting lrl@GOTENT to larl. s390: Avoid reloc overflows on undefined weak symbols
Replace relative long addressing instructions of weak symbols, which will definitely resolve to zero, with either a load address of 0, a NOP, or a trapping insn. This prevents the PC32DBL relocation from overflowing in case the binary will be loaded at 4GB or more. bfd/ChangeLog: * bfd/elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Replace instructions using undefined weak symbols with relative addressing to avoid relocation overflows. ld/ChangeLog: * ld/testsuite/ld-s390/s390.exp: * ld/testsuite/ld-s390/8GB.ld: New test. * ld/testsuite/ld-s390/weakundef-1.dd: New test. * ld/testsuite/ld-s390/weakundef-1.s: New test. |

Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. |

IBM Z: Add support for HLASM extended mnemonics
Add extended mnemonics used in the HLASM assembler. All of them are just aliases for instructions we already support and help when assembling code which was written for the HLASM assembler. The HLASM mnemonics are documented here: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSENW6_1.6.0/com.ibm.hlasm.v1r6.asm/asmr1023.pdf See the 'Branching with extended mnemonic codes' chapter. objdump will still print the existing mnemonics with the exception of relative nop branches (i.e. conditional branches with an empty condition code mask). Now we have jnop and jgnop which will be used by objdump when possible. The same change have been applied to the LLVM assembler: https://reviews.llvm.org/D92185 opcodes/ * s390-opc.txt: Add extended mnemonics. gas/ * testsuite/gas/s390/esa-g5.s: Test new extended mnemonics. * testsuite/gas/s390/esa-g5.d: Likewise. * testsuite/gas/s390/esa-z900.s: Likewise. * testsuite/gas/s390/esa-z900.d: Likewise. * testsuite/gas/s390/zarch-z900.s: Likewise. * testsuite/gas/s390/zarch-z900.d: Likewise. ld/ * testsuite/ld-s390/tlsbin_64.dd: The newly added jgnop mnemonic replaces long relative branches with empty condition code mask. |

Dynamic TLS section symbols
It is possible to create shared libraries on PowerPC using -ftls-model=inital-exec or -ftls-model=local-exec. The first is half reasonable, getting you a shared library that can't be dlopen'd but otherwise is reasonable. The second is quite bad. Not only do you lose being able to dlopen, the library also has dynamic text relocations. Worse, the TPREL16_LO, TPREL16_HA and other TPREL16 dynamic relocs emitted were wrong, resulting in wrong values being applied by ld.so. Using the first TLS section symbol in dynamic relocations for local TLS symbols doesn't work. It's wrong because TLS symbols used by TLS relocs have values relative to the TLS segment, whereas the TLS section symbols are addresses. This patch instead uses a symbol index of zero which is used elsewhere by PowerPC on dynamic TLS relocs. It's not strictly ABI compliant to use a non-TLS symbol with TLS relocs but symbol index zero can be interpreted as "no symbol". Not using the first TLS section symbol means it doesn't need to be dynamic. S/390: Prevent GOT access rewrite for certain symbols
When dereferencing a GOT slot with lgrl or lg we rewrite this using larl to get rid of the extra memory access. However, we cannot do this for: - symbols marked for absolute addressing - symbols at odd addresses (larl can handle only even addresses) Fixed with the attached patch. bfd/ChangeLog: 2018-09-17 Andreas Krebbel <krebbel@linux.ibm.com> * elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Prevent rewriting of GOT accesses with larl for ABS or misaligned symbols. ld/ChangeLog: 2018-09-17 Andreas Krebbel <krebbel@linux.ibm.com> * testsuite/ld-s390/gotreloc-1.s: Add tests for ABS and misaligned symbol. S/390: Improve partial relro support for 64 bit
Currently on S/390 the .got.plt always comes first which prevents the GNU_RELRO segment from being extended across the non-plt GOT entries. Just swapping both unfortunately is not that simple since our ABI requires the _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ symbol to point to the very beginning of the entire GOT. Of the 3 magic GOT entries the first is accessed via got pointer while second and third are being accessed via DT_PLTGOT. In order to keep them together we make DT_PLTGOT to point to the .got instead of .got.plt. However, this violates an assumption in the dynamic linker prelink undo code about the GOTPLT entries starting at DT_PLTGOT + 3. We got rid of this requirement with a Glibc patch already in version 2.24: https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-06/msg01302.html So the S/390 relro GOT layout will look like this with this patch: +----------------------------------+ |got[0]: DYNAMIC | <--- _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ == DT_PLTGOT .got |got[1]: link_map parm | |got[2]: &_dl_runtime_resolve | +----------------------------------+ | | non-plt GOT entries | | | | +----------------------------------+ | | <--- .gotplt, PLT GOT entries | | | | | | +----------------------------------+ The patch detects the current layout in size_dynamic_section in order to deal also with linker scripts not generated by this ld version. With partial relro enabled we pick a linker script where .got and .got.plt are swapped which then triggers the rest of the logic. ld/ChangeLog: 2018-07-18 Andreas Krebbel <krebbel@linux.ibm.com> * emulparams/elf64_s390.sh: Define GENERATE_RELRO_SCRIPT and SEPARATE_GOTPLT. * testsuite/ld-s390/gotreloc_64-relro-1.dd: New test. * testsuite/ld-s390/gotreloc_64-norelro-1.dd: Renamed from ... * testsuite/ld-s390/gotreloc_64-1.dd: ... this. * testsuite/ld-s390/s390.exp: Split the GOT testcase into two. bfd/ChangeLog: 2018-07-18 Andreas Krebbel <krebbel@linux.ibm.com> * elf-s390-common.c (s390_gotplt_after_got_p): New function. (elf_s390_size_dynamic_sections): Move space for magic GOT entries from .got.plt to .got if necessary and pick the right location for _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_. (elf_s390_relocate_section): Use the wrapper functions from elf-s390-common.c to deal with both possible layouts (either .got or .got.plt first). (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_sections): Likewise. (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Make the location of the GOT magic entries conditional. |

Define various symbols conditionally in shared libraries
The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". ld: Remove PF_X from PT_PHDR segment
It was reasonable to mark PT_PHDR segment with PF_X for compatibility with UnixWare and Solaris linkers 20 years ago. But it is inappropriate today when the primary OS of GNU ld is Linux. This patch removes PF_X from PT_PHDR segment as gold does. Tested natively on Linux/x86 as well as crosss-binutils for alpha-linux, ia64-linux, powerpc64-linux, powerpc-linux, s390-linux, s390x-linux, sparc64-linux and sparc-linux. bfd/ PR ld/22423 * elf.c (_bfd_elf_map_sections_to_segments): Remove PF_X from PT_PHDR segment. ld/ PR ld/22423 * testsuite/ld-alpha/tlsbin.rd: Replace "R E " with "R +" for PT_PHDR segment. * testsuite/ld-alpha/tlsbinr.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-ia64/tlsbin.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-powerpc/tlsexe.r: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-powerpc/tlsexe32.r: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-powerpc/tlsexetoc.r: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-s390/tlsbin.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-s390/tlsbin_64.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-sparc/tlssunbin32.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-sparc/tlssunbin64.rd: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr22423.d: New test. |

readelf ngettext fixes
This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. For now I'm punting on this one. Changes to readelf output require lots of testsuite adjustment.. binutils/ * dwarf.c (read_uleb128): Properly pluralize messages. Support different ld --hash-style in the ld testsuite
When ld is running with something other than --hash-style=sysv by default, numerous tests need tweaking. Most of the changes just add --hash-style=sysv. Properly place the NULL STT_FILE symbol revistited
I was having a little closer look at what is going on here and noticed that HJ unconditionally emits a NULL STT_FILE symbol before emitting forced local symbols. That means we really don't need a second pass over forced local symbols. The only reason for two passes is when some forced local symbol can be emitted before the NULL STT_FILE. So I set about removing the second pass, updating the testsuite all over again. It's also unnecessary to emit the NULL STT_FILE when no previous file symbol has been emitted. bfd/ PR ld/17975 * elflink.c (struct elf_outext_info): Remove need_second_pass and second_pass. (elf_link_output_extsym): Delete code handling second forced local pass. Move code emitting NULL STT_FILE symbol later, so that it can be omitted if forced local is stripped. Don't emit the NULL STT_FILE if no file symbols have been output. (bfd_elf_final_link): Remove second forced local pass. * elf32-ppc.c (add_stub_sym): Set linker_def on linker syms.
