af969b14ae PR 30569, always call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections 
This largely mechanical patch is preparation for a followup patch.

For quite some time I've thought that it would be useful to call
elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections even when no dynamic objects are
seen by the linker.  That's what this patch does, with some renaming.
There are no functional changes to the linker, just a move of the
dynobj test in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections to target backend
functions, replacing the asserts/aborts already there.  No doubt some
of the current always_size_sections functions could be moved to
size_dynamic_sections but I haven't made that change.

Because both hooks are now always called, I have renamed
always_size_sections to early_size_sections and size_dynamic_sections
to late_size_sections.  I condisdered calling late_size_sections plain
size_sections, since this is the usual target dynamic section sizing
hook, but decided that searching the sources for "size_sections" would
then hit early_size_sections and other functions.

fd67aa1129 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:

1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
   author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
   files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

3318d80021 gcc-4.5 build fixes 
Trying to build binutils with an older gcc currently fails.  Working
around these gcc bugs is not onerous so let's fix them.

d87bef3a7b Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

c94cb02662 HOWTO size encoding 
This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a
value given in bytes.  This of course requires editing all target
uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify
new target HOWTOs.  Object files before/after this patch are
unchanged in .data and .rodata.

a2c5833233 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files 
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

2ad55ffca1 PR28163, Segment fault in function rl78_special_reloc 
Relocation offset checks were completely missing in the rl78 backend,
allowing a relocation to write over memory anywhere.  This was true
for rl78_special_reloc, a function primarily used when applying debug
relocations, and in rl78_elf_relocate_section used by the linker.

This patch fixes those problems by correcting inaccuracies in the
relocation howtos, then uses those howtos to sanity check relocation
offsets before applying relocations.  In addition, the patch
implements overflow checking using the howto information rather than
the ad-hoc scheme implemented in relocate_section.  I implemented the
overflow checking in rl78_special_reloc too.

	* elf32-rl78.c (RL78REL, RL78_OP_REL): Add mask parameter.
	(rl78_elf_howto_table): Set destination masks.  Correct size and
	bitsize of DIR32_REV.  Correct complain_on_overflow for many relocs
	as per tests in relocate_section.  Add RH_SFR.  Correct bitsize
	for RH_SADDR.  Set size to 3 and bitsize to 0 for all OP relocs.
	(check_overflow): New function.
	(rl78_special_reloc): Check that reloc address is within section.
	Apply relocations using reloc howto.  Check for overflow.
	(RANGE): Delete.
	(rl78_elf_relocate_section): Sanity check r_offset.  Perform
	overflow checking using reloc howto.

983cdaecc1 PR28176, rl78 complex reloc divide by zero 
This is a bit more than just preventing the divide by zero.  Most of
the patch is tidying up error reporting, so that for example, linking
an object file with a reloc stack underflow produces a linker error
rather than just displaying a message that might be ignored.

	(rl78_stack_push, rl78_stack_pop): New inline functions.
	(rl78_compute_complex_reloc): Add status and error message params.
	Use new inline stack handling functions.  Report stack overflow
	or underflow, and divide by zero.
	(rl78_special_reloc): Return status and error message from
	rl78_compute_complex_reloc.
	(rl78_elf_relocate_section): Similarly.  Modernise reloc error
	reporting.  Delete unused bfd_reloc_other case.  Don't assume
	DIR24S_PCREL overflow is due to undefined function.
	(rl78_offset_for_reloc): Adjust to suit rl78_compute_complex_reloc.

0f68420117 elf_backend_relocate_section int vs. bfd_boolean 
This functions was changed to return an int in commit ece5ef6079 but
since bfd_boolean was an int typedef I lazily left all the ELF
relocate_section functions as returning bfd_boolean, except the SPU
one.  In order to use _Bool or bool in place of bfd_boolean we need to
be fussy about the return types.

Some minor tidies.  Allocating memory for internal relocs and symbols
after reading external relocs is slightly better with fuzzed files.
You can at least do something about silly sizes that way.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros 
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions.  The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections.  Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma.  I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section.  This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

6c6bc89930 ELF: Don't set non_ir_ref_regular in check_relocs 
Since elf_link_add_object_symbols sets non_ir_ref_regular now, there is
no need to set non_ir_ref_regular in check_relocs.

We'd like to have the elf_link_hash_table srelplt field rather than
some private target field used to save short-cuts to a PLT relocation
section.  This save a little space but mainly is so that the generic

50e03d47b7 Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data 
Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors.  I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the
patch commit 4519d071.

1a72702bb3 Return void from linker callbacks 
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always
return true, so any code handling a false return is dead.  What's
more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen,
and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c.
The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition
error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic
failure".

This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always
return true.  I kept the return status for "notice" because that one
does happen to need to return "out of memory".

Various fixes to linker relaxation.  In general, we need to support
relaxing every branch, even if we don't relax it in the assembler,
so we can optionally defer relaxation to the linker.

* elf32-rl78.c (rl78_offset_for_reloc): Add more relocs.
(rl78_elf_relax_section): Add bc/bz/bnc/bnz/bh/bnh.  Fix reloc
choices.

* config/rl78-parse.y: Make all branches relaxable via
rl78_linkrelax_branch().
* config/tc-rl78.c (rl78_linkrelax_branch): Mark all relaxable
branches with relocs.
(options): Add OPTION_NORELAX.

0e1862bb40 Add output_type to bfd_link_info 
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE.
There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs.  This
patch adds an "output_type" field:

and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and
relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check
for output type and the "pic" field check if output is PIC.  Macros,

and bfd_link_pie, are provided to check for output features.
