The "HOWTO size encoding" patch put 1 as the HOWTO size arg for numerous howtos that are unused, describe dynamic relocs, are markers, or otherwise are special purpose reloc howtos that don't care about the size. The idea was to ensure no howto changed by inspecting object files. Alan Modra	c94cb02662	HOWTO size encoding ... This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.	2022-01-02 12:04:28 +10:30
Simon Marchi	9bc8e54b1f	bfd: fix -Wunused errors with clang 13+ ... Clang 13 and 14 produce some -Wunused-but-set-{variable,parameter} for situations where gcc doesn't. In particular, when a variable is set and then used in a way to update its own value. For example, if `i` is only used in this way: int i = 2; i++; i = i + 1; gcc won't warn, but clang will. Fix all such errors found in an --enable-targets=all build. It would be important for somebody who knows what they're doing to just make sure that these variables can indeed be deleted, and that there a no cases where it's a bug, and the variable should actually be used. This functions was changed to return an int in commit ece5ef6079 but since bfd_boolean was an int typedef I lazily left all the ELF relocate_section functions as returning bfd_boolean, except the SPU one. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is Alan Modra	fd3619828e	bfd_section_* macros ... This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Nick Clifton	12ef3f5a7c	Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts. ... GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. Alan Modra	1a72702bb3	Return void from linker callbacks ... The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. Rather than searching the output for a specific named section, it's better, where possible, to use a linker created dynamic section to set a dynamic tag's value.
