_bfd_free_cached_info
doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore sometimes will result in memory leaks. This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info. Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true, ie. the default now frees objalloc memory. |

asan: ppc64_elf_get_synthetic_symtab heap buffer overflow
Fuzzed input files with sizes of .dynamic not a multiple of dynamic tag size can result in reading past the end of the buffer with the current simple checks. Fix that, and use the same check in other files that process input object .dynamic section. Remove use of bfd_uint64_t and similar
Requiring C99 means that uses of bfd_uint64_t can be replaced with uint64_t, and similarly for bfd_int64_t, BFD_HOST_U_64_BIT, and BFD_HOST_64_BIT. This patch does that, removes #ifdef BFD_HOST_* and tidies a few places that print 64-bit values. |

Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files. |

bfd: fix -Wunused errors with clang 13+
Clang 13 and 14 produce some -Wunused-but-set-{variable,parameter} for
situations where gcc doesn't. In particular, when a variable is set and
then used in a way to update its own value. For example, if `i` is only
used in this way:
int i = 2;
i++;
i = i + 1;
gcc won't warn, but clang will.
Fix all such errors found in an --enable-targets=all build. It would be
important for somebody who knows what they're doing to just make sure
that these variables can indeed be deleted, and that there a no cases
where it's a bug, and the variable should actually be used.
The first instance of this error fix by this patch is:

FIXME for merging of e_flags and .gnu.attributes
Code in the linker, present before the addition of .gnu.attributes support, results in shared libraries not being considered by BFD when merging e_flags and .gnu.attributes from input files to the output. That doesn't seem correct to me, but I don't know enough about all the various ABIs to change the behaviour with any confidence. So this patch merely punts on dynamic objects in merge_private_bfd_data target functions, with a FIXME for maintainer attention. I haven't excluded shared libraries from being considered where the target merge_private_bfd_data (a) already has code dealing with shared libraries, or (b) where that function just sets the output to the most constraining arch/mach combination and other fairly trivial merges, or (c) when the target has no shared library linker support. elf_backend_section_flags and _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data
I was looking at elf_backend_section_flags as a means of setting SEC_SMALL_DATA for .sdata, .sbss and the like, and condidered adding an asection* parameter to access the section name easily before realising that hdr->bfd_section of course makes the section available. So no new parameter needed. In fact the flagword* parameter isn't needed either, so out it goes. The patch also tidies some horrible code in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook that can change whether known ABI sections have sh_type and sh_flags set up depending on which of the bfd_make_section functions is used. (Some of those set section flags before _bfd_elf_new_section_hook is called, others leave the flags zero.) The function also had some hacks for .init_array and .fini_array to affect how _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data behaved for those sections. It's cleaner to do that in _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data. So that all goes and we now init sh_type and sh_flags for all known ABI sections in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook. _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data is changed to suit, and now doesn't just single out SHT_INIT_ARRAY and SHT_FINI_ARRAY but rather any of the special section types. The _bfd_elf_new_section_hook change resulting in +FAIL: ld-aarch64/erratum835769-843419 exposing some errors in the aarch64 backend. elfNN_aarch64_size_stubs should not be looking at linker created sections in the stub bfd. Nor should code like "symtab_hdr = &elf_tdata (input_bfd)->symtab_hdr" be run without first checking that input_bfd is ELF. * elf-bfd.h (elf_backend_section_flags): Remove flagword* param. * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Set section flags before calling elf_backend_section_flags with adjusted params. Use newsect->flags past that point. (_bfd_elf_new_section_hook): Always set sh_type and sh_flags for special sections. bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Move setting of OSABI to final_write_processing, after symbols are written. This allows OSABI to be set based on symbols actually written to the output rather than assuming input symbols will be output. Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data
Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the
patch commit

Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one does happen to need to return "out of memory". include/ * bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments.
