5ab84cb8c8 ld: generate SFrame stack trace info for .plt.got
PR/32298 sframe: no SFrame stack trace info generated for .plt.got

Add support to generate SFrame stack trace info for .plt.got section.
Enhance the current definition of struct elf_x86_sframe_plt to include
initialized SFrame FDE/FREs applicable for .plt.got section. There are
two variants of .plt.got entries: 16 byte and 8 byte.

8 byte:
    ff 25 00 00 00 00     jmpq  *name@GOTPCREL(%rip)
    66 90                 xchg  %ax,%ax

16 byte:
    f3 0f 1e fa           endbr64
    ff 25 66 2f 00 00     jmpq  *name@GOTPCREL(%rip)
    66 0f 1f 44 00 00     nopw   0x0(%rax,%rax,1)

For the testcase, define some application symbols such that their PLT
entry is placed in .plt.got and ensure SFrame information is generated
with and without -z ibtplt.

ChangeLog:

a36d6ffd9b ld: fix wrong SFrame info for lazy IBT PLT
Fix PR/32296 sframe: wrong SFrame info for pltN and .plt.sec for -z ibtplt

The x86 psABI defines a 2-PLT scheme for IBT which uses .plt and
.plt.sec entries. It was observed that SFrame information for .plt.sec
section was incorrect. The erroneous assumption was that SFrame stack
trace information for .plt.sec with lazy binding is the same as SFrame
stack trace information for .plt with lazy binding. This is corrected
now by initializing a new SFrame PLT helper object
elf_x86_64_sframe_ibt_plt for lazy PLT with IBT.

Add a testcase where linking with -z ibtplt generates .plt.sec entries and
ensure correct SFrame information for it.

ChangeLog:
	PR/32296
	* bfd/elf64-x86-64.c (elf_x86_64_sframe_ibt_pltn_fre2): New
	definition elf_x86_64_sframe_ibt_plt.  Use it in

1f1b5e506b bfd/ELF: restrict file alignment for object files
While for executables properly aligning sections within the file can be
quite relevant, the same is of pretty little importance for relocatable
object files. Avoid passing "true" into
_bfd_elf_assign_file_position_for_section() when dealing with object
files, but compensate minimally by applying log_file_align in such
cases as a cap to the alignment put in place.

d774bf9b36 x86: Add tls check in gas
Assembler shouldn't accept invalid TLS instructions, TLS relocations
can only be used with specific instructions as specified in TLS psABI
and linker issues an error when TLS relocations are used with wrong
instructions or format. Since it is inconvenient for gcc to rely on
linker to report errors, adding TLS check in the assembler stage so
that gcc can know TLS errors earlier.

79937804a5 Don't trim trailing newline in run_host_cmd
Testcases like ld-elf/pr19719a.c that

on success ought to see the whole output for "string match".

5c7f6da432 readelf/objdump: Display SFrame fixed RA offset as 'f' in dump
For the SFrame FRE frame-pointer (FP) offset from CFA a 'u' is displayed
if it is unavailable.

For the SFrame FRE return-address (RA) offset from CFA a 'u' was
displayed if the ABI uses a fixed RA offset from CFA. By chance a
'u' was also displayed if the RA offset is unavailable, as the string
buffer was not initialized after formatting the FP offset. Note that it
could not occur that the FP offset was erroneously displayed as RA
offset, as the SFrame format cannot have a FRE with FP offset without
RA offset.

For the FRE RA offset display 'f' if the ABI uses a fixed RA offset
from CFA. Display a 'u' if it is unavailable.

76f05e1dfb readelf/objdump: Dump SFrame CFA fixed FP and RA offsets
The SFrame format allows architectures to specify fixed offsets from the
CFA, if any, from which the frame pointer (FP) and/or return address
(RA) may be recovered. These offsets are stored in the SFrame header.

For instance the SFrame generation in the assembler for x86 AMD64
specifies a fixed offset from the CFA, from which the return address
(RA) may be recovered.

When dumping the SFrame header, for instance in readelf/objdump with
option --sframe, do also dump the specified fixed offsets from the CFA,
if any, from which the frame pointer (FP) and return address (RA) may
be recovered.

Update the common SFrame test case verification patterns to allow for
the optional dumping of the CFA fixed FP/RA offsets. Update the x86-
specific SFrame and SCFI test case verification patterns to require a
CFA fixed RA offset of -8.

branches, it is safer to require glibc 2.36 for such binaries.

Extend the glibc version dependency of GLIBC_ABI_DT_RELR for DT_RELR to
also add GLIBC_2.36 version dependency for -z mark-plt on the shared C
library if it provides a GLIBC_2.XX symbol version.

260aa570ed Fix ld/x86: reduce testsuite dependency on system object files
commit eab996435f
Author: Jan Beulich <jbeulich@suse.com>
Date:   Tue Nov 7 13:58:32 2023 +0100

    ld/x86: reduce testsuite dependency on system object files

changed some C compiler tests to assembler/linker tests which introduced
2 problems:

1. It broke x32 binutils tests since --64 was passed to assembler, but
-m elf_x86_64 wasn't passed to linker.
2. -nostdlib was passed to C compiler driver to exclude standard run-time
files which should be avoided with -r option for linker tests.

Fix them by passing -m elf_x86_64 to linker and removing -nostdlib for
linker tests with -r.

	PR ld/30722
	* testsuite/ld-x86-64/x86-64.exp: Pass -m elf_x86_64 to linker
	for tests with --64. Remove -nostdlib for tests with -r.

eab996435f ld/x86: reduce testsuite dependency on system object files
PR ld/30722
Tests looking for certain .note-section recorded properties may not
involve object files from the underlying platform (e.g. via using the C
compiler for linking): Such object files may themselves have similar
note sections, and hence they may influence the overall outcome.

For now convert just the tests known to be affected by crt*.o coming
with "ISA v3 needed" notes. Eventually other tests ought to be
converted, too.

fa4f2d46f9 x86: Fix DT_JMPREL/DT_PLTRELSZ when relocs share a section
If a linker script does not place the PLT relocations and "normal"
relocations in separate ELF sections, `ld` will currently output incorrect
values for DT_JMPREL and DT_PLTRELSZ - they cover the entire ELF section,
rather than just the PLT relocations

Don't ignore the extent of the BFD section - use the size of the srelplt
BFD section and its offset from the output_secttion

2902e6682d /DISCARD/ in ld testsuite
The canonical form to discard all sections not mentioned earlier in
the script is
  /DISCARD/ : { *(*) }
not
  /DISCARD/ : { *(.*) }
".*" happens to work with the usual section names starting with a dot,
but let's not promote something not quite right.

02d2a36902 PR10957, Missing option to really print section+offset
Many of the reloc error messages have already been converted from

63e8fb8625 Support NEXT_SECTION in ALIGNOF and SIZEOF
This patch is aimed at making __bss_start properly aligned with the
first of any bss-style sections following. Most of the work here
involves keeping track of the last output section seen when processing
the linker script.

You can almost align __bss_start properly by using
${RELOCATING+. = ALIGN(${DATA_SDATA-${NO_SMALL_DATA-ALIGNOF(.${SBSS_NAME}) != 0 ? ALIGNOF(.${SBSS_NAME}) : }}${BSS_PLT+ALIGNOF(.plt) != 0 ? ALIGNOF(.plt) : }ALIGNOF(.${BSS_NAME}));}
and changing every place that defines NO_SMALL_DATA to use " ", but
having two .plt sections (marked SPECIAL) on some backends foils that
idea. The problem is that you only want to pick up the following
.plt, not the one preceeding __bss_start in the data segment if the
backend decides that is the proper .plt section.

Perhaps that could be fixed too, but I decided instead to extend the
linker script a little. THIS_SECTION and PREV_SECTION could easily be
added too.

	* ld.texi (ALIGNOF, SIZEOF): Update and mention NEXT_SECTION.
	* ldexp.c (output_section_find): New function.
	(fold_name <ALIGNOF, SIZEOF>): Use output_section_find.
	(exp_fold_tree): Add os parameter. Adjust all calls.
	(exp_fold_tree_no_dot, exp_get_vma, exp_get_power): Likewise.
	* ldexp.h (struct ldexp_control): Add last_os.
	(exp_fold_tree, exp_fold_tree_no_dot): Update prototypes.
	(exp_get_vma, exp_get_power): Likewise.
	* ldlang.c: Pass last output section to expression folder
	calls throughout file.
	(open_input_bfds): Add os parameter to track last os seen.
	(lang_size_sections_1): Rename output_section_statement param
	to current_os.  Track last os.
	(lang_do_assignments_1): Track last os.
	* scripttempl/arclinux.sc: Align to ALIGNOF NEXT_SECTION
	before defining __bss_start.
