ld: new options --ctf-variables and --ctf-share-types
libctf recently changed to make it possible to not emit the CTF variables section. Make this the default for ld: the variables section is a simple name -> type mapping, and the names can be quite voluminous. Nothing in the variables section appears in the symbol table, by definition, so GDB cannot make use of them: special-purpose projects that implement their own analogues of symbol table lookup can do so, but they'll need to tell the linker to emit the variables section after all. The new --ctf-variables option does this. The --ctf-share-types option (valid values "share-duplicated" and "share-unconflicted") allow the caller to specify the CTF link mode. Most users will want share-duplicated, since it allows for more convenient debugging: but very large projects composed of many decoupled components may want to use share-unconflicted mode, which places types that appear in only one TU into per-TU dicts. (They may also want to relink the CTF using the ctf_link API and cu-mapping, to make their "components" larger than a single TU. Right now the linker does not expose the CU-mapping machinery. Perhaps it should in future to make this use case easier.) For now, giving the linker the ability to emit share-duplicated CTF lets us add testcases for that mode to the testsuite. ld/ * ldlex.h (option_values) <OPTION_CTF_VARIABLES, OPTION_NO_CTF_VARIABLES, OPTION_CTF_SHARE_TYPES>: New. * ld.h (ld_config_type) <ctf_variables, ctf_share_duplicated>: New fields. * ldlang.c (lang_merge_ctf): Use them. * lexsup.c (ld_options): Add ctf-variables, no-ctf-variables, ctf-share-types. (parse_args) <OPTION_CTF_VARIABLES, OPTION_NO_CTF_VARIABLES, OPTION_CTF_SHARE_TYPES>: New cases. * ld.texi: Document new options. * NEWS: Likewise. |

ld: Add --export-dynamic-symbol and --export-dynamic-symbol-list
--export-dynamic-symbol-list is like a dynamic list, but without the symbolic property for unspecified symbols. When creating an executable, --export-dynamic-symbol-list is treated like --dynamic-list. When creating a shared library, it is treated like --dynamic-list if -Bsymbolic or --dynamic-list are used, otherwise, it is ignored, so that references to matched symbols will not be bound to the definitions within the shared library. Remove CR16C support
I think it is past time to remove CR16C support. CR16C was added in 2004, and only for ld. gas and binutils support is lacking, and there have been no commits to bfd/elf32-cr16c.c other than warning fixes or global maintainers making changes to all targets. I see no maintainer listed for CR16C, and no commits from anyone at NSC supporting the target. Furthermore, at the time the CR16 support was added in 2007, config.sub was changed upstream to no longer recognise cr16c as a valid cpu. That means the CR16C ld support is only available as a secondary target by configuring with, for example, --enable-targets=all or --enable-targets=cr16c-unknown-elf. AArch64: Implement choice between Cortex-A53 erratum workarounds. (PR ld/24373)
The Cortex-A53 erratum currently has two ways it can resolve the erratum when using the flag --fix-cortex-a53-843419: 1) If the address is within the range of an ADR instruction it rewrites the ADRP into an ADR, and those doesn't need the use of a veneer. 2) If the address is not within range, it adds a branch to a veneer which will execute the final bit of the erratum workaround and branch back to the call site. When we do this we always generate the veneers and we always align the size of the text section to 4KB. This is because we only know which workaround we can use after all linking has finished and all addresses are known. This means even though the veneers are not used, we still generate the section and we still change the size of the input section. This is problematic for small memory devices as this would require the user to take about a ~4KB hit in memory even though it's not even used. Since there's no real way to restart the linking process from the final write phase this patch solves the issue by allowing the user more control over which erratum workaround gets used. Concretely this changes the option --fix-cortex-a53-843419 to take optional arguments --fix-cortex-a53-843419[=full|adr|adrp] - full (default): Use both ADRP and ADR workaround. This is equivalent to not specifying any options and is the default behavior before this patch. - adr: Only use the ADR workaround, this will not cause any increase in binary size but linking will fail if the referenced address is out of range of an ADR instruction. - adrp: Use only the ADRP workaround, this will never rewrite your ADRP. In the cases where the user knows how big their binaries are the `adr` option would prevent the unneeded overhead. bfd/ChangeLog: PR ld/24373 * bfd-in.h (enum erratum_84319_opts): New (bfd_elf64_aarch64_set_options, bfd_elf32_aarch64_set_options): Change int to enum erratum_84319_opts. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * elfnn-aarch64.c (struct elf_aarch64_link_hash_table): Change fix_erratum_843419 to use new enum, remove fix_erratum_843419_adr. ld: Add --no-print-map-discarded option

[BFD, LD, AArch64, 3/3] Add --pac-plt to enable PLTs protected with PAC.
This is part of the patch series to add support for BTI and PAC in AArch64 linker. 1) This patch adds new definitions of PAC enabled PLTs and both BTI and PAC enabled PLTs. 2) It also defines the new dynamic tag DT_AARCH64_PAC_PLT for the PAC enabled PLTs. 3) This patch adds a new ld command line option: --pac-plt. In the presence of this option, the linker uses the PAC enabled PLTs and marks with DT_AARCH64_PAC_PLT. 4) In case both BTI and PAC are enabled the linker should pick PLTs enabled with both and also use dynamic tags for both. [BFD, LD, AArch64, 2/3] Add --force-bti to enable BTI and to select BTI enabled PLTs
This is part of the patch series to add support for BTI and PAC in AArch64 linker. 1) This patch adds a new ld command line option: --force-bti. In the presence of this option, the linker enables BTI with the GNU_PROPERTY_AARCH64_FEATURE_1_BTI feature. This gives out warning in case of missing gnu notes for BTI in inputs. 2) It also defines a new set of BTI enabled PLTs. These are used either when all the inputs are marked with GNU_PROPERTY_AARCH64_FEATURE_1_BTI or when the new --force-bti option is used. This required adding new fields in elf_aarch64_link_hash_table so that we could make the PLT related information more generic. 3) It also defines a dynamic tag DT_AARCH64_BTI_PLT. The linker uses this whenever it picks BTI enabled PLTs. All these are made according to the new AArch64 ELF ABI https://developer.arm.com/docs/ihi0056/latest/elf-for-the-arm-64-bit-architecture-aarch64-abi-2018q4 *** bfd/ChangeLog *** 2019-03-13 Sudakshina Das <sudi.das@arm.com> Szabolcs Nagy <szabolcs.nagy@arm.com> * bfd-in.h (aarch64_plt_type, aarch64_enable_bti_type): New. Add support for the C_SKY series of processors.
This patch series is a new binutils port for C-SKY processors, including support for both the V1 and V2 processor variants. V1 is derived from the MCore architecture while V2 is substantially different, with mixed 16- and 32-bit instructions, a larger register set, a different (but overlapping) ABI, etc. There is support for bare-metal ELF targets and Linux with both glibc and uClibc. This code is being contributed jointly by C-SKY Microsystems and Mentor Graphics. C-SKY is responsible for the technical content and has proposed Lifang Xia and Yunhai Shang as port maintainers. (Note that C-SKY does have a corporate copyright assignment on file with the FSF.) Mentor Graphics' role has been cleaning up the code, adding documentation and additional test cases, etc, to address issues we anticipated reviewers would complain about. bfd * Makefile.am (ALL_MACHINES, ALL_MACHINES_CFILES): Add C-SKY. Fix use of "command line X" in binutils doc
Binutils documentation uses a mix of spelling for the compound word "command-line X". According to [1]: "Sometimes compound words are written separately (nail polish), sometimes with a hyphen (short-sighted) and sometimes as one word (eyelashes). Often new compounds are written as two separate words and, as they become more familiar, they are either connected with a hyphen (-) or made into one word." I think command-line X is common enough in our industry that the two workds command and line should be connected. Since command-line is more common than commandline, I propose to update binutils documentation to consistently use "command-line" when this is used as an adjective to a noun (eg. command-line argument, command-line switch, command-line option and command-line flag). I've left occurences of "the command line" as is. I've also left gdb, sim and readline alone and have only touched public documentation (texi and NEWS files). ld: Add --enable-separate-code
This patch adds --enable-separate-code to ld configure to turn on -z separate-code by default and enables it by default for Linux/x86. This avoids mixing code pages with data to improve cache performance as well as security. To reduce x86-64 executable and shared object sizes, the maximum page size is reduced from 2MB to 4KB when -z separate-code is turned on by default. Note: -z max-page-size= can be used to set the maximum page size. We compared SPEC CPU 2017 performance before and after this change on Skylake server. There are no any significant performance changes. Everything is mostly below +/-1%. bfd/ * config.in: Regenerated. * configure: Likewise. * configure.ac: Add --enable-separate-code. Add -z undefs option to the ELF linker.
Currently we have no obvious way to revert the action of the "-z defs" command line option. The "--unresolved-symbols=ignore-in-object-files" does pretty much what is needed, but it is non-obvious and it also touches the setting for reporting unresolved symbol references from shared libraries. So I am proposing adding a "-z undefs" option to be the inverse of "-z defs". (I thought that "-z nodefs" might be confusing since it implies banning all definitions, rather than allowing them). In addition the description of the "-z defs" option in the linker documentation is misleading in one place, where it says: 'defs' Disallows undefined symbols in object files. Undefined symbols in shared libraries are still allowed. whereas later on it gets it right: '-z defs' Report unresolved symbol references from regular object files. This is done even if the linker is creating a non-symbolic shared library. The switch '--[no-]allow-shlib-undefined' controls the behaviour for reporting unresolved references found in shared libraries being linked in. * emultempl/elf32.em (_handle_option): Add support for "-z undefs" as the opposite of "-z defs". * ld.texinfo: Document the new option. Update the description of the -z defs option to make it clear that it does generate an error if an undefined symbol reference is found in an object file whilst creating a shared library. * NEWS: Document this new feature. |

x86: Support Intel IBT with IBT property and IBT-enable PLT
To support IBT in Intel Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET) instructions: https://software.intel.com/sites/default/files/managed/4d/2a/control-flow-enforcement-technology-preview.pdf #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_AND 0xc0000002 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_IBT (1U << 0) are added to GNU program properties to indicate that all executable sections are compatible with IBT when ENDBR instruction starts each valid target where an indirect branch instruction can land. GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_IBT is set on output only if it is set on all relocatable inputs. The followings changes are made to the Procedure Linkage Table (PLT): 1. For 64-bit x86-64, PLT is changed to PLT0: push GOT[1] bnd jmp *GOT[2] nop ... PLTn: endbr64 push namen_reloc_index bnd jmp PLT0 together with the second PLT section: PLTn: endbr64 bnd jmp *GOT[namen_index] nop BND prefix is also added so that IBT-enabled PLT is compatible with MPX. 2. For 32-bit x86-64 (x32) and i386, PLT is changed to PLT0: push GOT[1] jmp *GOT[2] nop ... PLTn: endbr64 # endbr32 for i386. push namen_reloc_index jmp PLT0 together with the second PLT section: PLTn: endbr64 # endbr32 for i386. jmp *GOT[namen_index] nop BND prefix isn't used since MPX isn't supported on x32 and BND registers aren't used in parameter passing on i386. GOT is an array of addresses. Initially, GOT[namen_index] is filled with the address of the ENDBR instruction of the corresponding entry in the first PLT section. The function, namen, is called via the ENDBR instruction in the second PLT entry. GOT[namen_index] is updated to the actual address of the function, namen, at run-time. 2 linker command line options are added: 1. -z ibtplt: Generate IBT-enabled PLT. 2. -z ibt: Generate GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_IBT in GNU program properties as well as IBT-enabled PLT. bfd/ * elf32-i386.c (elf_i386_lazy_ibt_plt0_entry): New. ld: Allow section groups to be resolved as part of a relocatable link
This commit adds a new linker feature: the ability to resolve section groups as part of a relocatable link. Currently section groups are automatically resolved when performing a final link, and are carried through when performing a relocatable link. By carried through this means that one copy of each section group (from all the copies that might be found in all the input files) is placed into the output file. Sections that are part of a section group will not match input section specifiers within a linker script and are forcibly kept as separate sections. There is a slight resemblance between section groups and common section. Like section groups, common sections are carried through when performing a relocatable link, and resolved (allocated actual space) only at final link time. However, with common sections there is an ability to force the linker to allocate space for the common sections when performing a relocatable link, there's currently no such ability for section groups. This commit adds such a mechanism. This new facility can be accessed in two ways, first there's a command line switch --force-group-allocation, second, there's a new linker script command FORCE_GROUP_ALLOCATION. If one of these is used when performing a relocatable link then the linker will resolve the section groups as though it were performing a final link, the section group will be deleted, and the members of the group will be placed like normal input sections. If there are multiple copies of the group (from multiple input files) then only one copy of the group members will be placed, the duplicate copies will be discarded. Unlike common sections that have the --no-define-common command line flag, and INHIBIT_COMMON_ALLOCATION linker script command there is no way to prevent group resolution during a final link, this is because the ELF gABI specifically prohibits the presence of SHT_GROUP sections in a fully linked executable. However, the code as written should make adding such a feature trivial, setting the new resolve_section_groups flag to false during a final link should work as you'd expect. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Don't initially mark SEC_GROUP sections as SEC_EXCLUDE. (bfd_elf_set_group_contents): Replace use of abort with an assert. (assign_section_numbers): Use resolve_section_groups flag instead of relocatable link type. (_bfd_elf_init_private_section_data): Use resolve_section_groups flag instead of checking the final_link flag for part of the checks in here. Support ELF SHF_GNU_MBIND and PT_GNU_MBIND_XXX
Mark an ALLOC section, which should be placed in special memory area, with SHF_GNU_MBIND. Its sh_info field indicates the special memory type. GNU_MBIND section names start with ".mbind" so that they are placed as orphan sections by linker. All input GNU_MBIND sections with the same sh_type, sh_flags and sh_info are placed in one output GNU_MBIND section. In executable and shared object, create a GNU_MBIND segment for each GNU_MBIND section and its segment type is PT_GNU_MBIND_LO plus the sh_info value. Each GNU_MBIND segment is aligned at page boundary. The assembler syntax: .section .mbind.foo,"adx",%progbits ^ 0: Special memory type. | 'd' for SHF_GNU_MBIND. .section .mbind.foo,"adx",%progbits,0x1 ^ 1: Special memory type. | 'd' for SHF_GNU_MBIND. .section .mbind.bar,"adG",%progbits,.foo_group,comdat,0x2 ^ 2: Special memory type. | 'd' for SHF_GNU_MBIND. bfd/ * elf.c (get_program_header_size): Add a GNU_MBIND segment for each GNU_MBIND section and align GNU_MBIND section to page size.
