readelf: report DF_1_PIE as "Position-Independent Executable"
I finally found time to teach readelf to identify PIEs in the file header display and program header display. So in place of "DYN (Shared object file)" which isn't completely true, show "DYN (Position-Independent Executable file)". It requires a little bit of untangling code in readelf due to process_program_headers setting up dynamic_addr and dynamic_size, needed to scan .dynamic for the DT_FLAGS_1 entry, and process_program_headers itself wanting to display the file type in some cases. At first I modified process_program_header using a "probe" parameter similar to get_section_headers in order to inhibit output, but decided it was cleaner to separate out locate_dynamic_sections. binutils/ * readelf.c (locate_dynamic_section, is_pie): New functions. (get_file_type): Replace e_type parameter with filedata. Call is_pie for ET_DYN. Update all callers. (process_program_headers): Use local variables dynamic_addr and dynamic_size, updating filedata on exit from function. Set dynamic_size of 1 to indicate no dynamic section or segment. Update tests of dynamic_size throughout. * testsuite/binutils-all/x86-64/pr27708.dump: Update expected output. ld/ * testsuite/ld-pie/vaddr-0.d: Update expected output. gdb/ * testsuite/lib/gdb.exp (exec_is_pie): Match new PIE readelf output. |

MIPS/opcodes: Do not use CP0 register names for control registers
The CP0 control register set has never been defined, however encodings for the CFC0 and CTC0 instructions remained available for implementers up until the MIPS32 ISA declared them invalid and causing the Reserved Instruction exception[1]. Therefore we handle them for both assembly and disassembly, however in the latter case the names of CP0 registers from the regular set are incorrectly printed if named registers are requested. This is because we do not define separate operand classes for coprocessor regular and control registers respectively, which means the disassembler has no way to tell the two cases apart. Consequently nonsensical disassembly is produced like: cfc0 v0,c0_random Later the MIPSr5 ISA reused the encodings for XPA ASE MFHC0 and MTHC0 instructions[2] although it failed to document them in the relevant opcode table until MIPSr6 only. Correct the issue then by defining a new register class, OP_REG_CONTROL, and corresponding operand codes, `g' and `y' for the two positions in the machine instruction a control register operand can take. Adjust the test cases affected accordingly. While at it swap the regular MIPS opcode table "cfc0" and "ctc0" entries with each other so that they come in the alphabetical order. read_leb128 overflow checking
There is a tiny error left in dwarf.c:read_leb128 after Nick fixed the signed overflow problem in code I wrote. It's to do with sleb128 values that have unnecessary excess bytes. For example, -1 is represented as 0x7f, the most efficient encoding, but also as 0xff,0x7f or 0xff,0xff,0x7f and so on. None of these sequences overflow any size signed value, but read_leb128 will report an overflow given enough excess bytes. This patch fixes that problem, and since the proper test for signed values with excess bytes can easily be adapted to also test a sleb byte with just some bits that overflow the result, I changed the code to not use signed right shifts. (The C standard ISO/IEC 9899:1999 6.5.7 says signed right shifts of negative values have an implementation defined value. A long time ago I even used a C compiler for a certain microprocessor that always did unsigned right shifts. Mind you, it is very unlikely to be compiling binutils with such a compiler.) bfd/ * wasm-module.c: Guard include of limits.h. (CHAR_BIT): Provide backup define. nds32_elf_get_relocated_section_contents
nds32_elf_get_relocated_section_contents uses nds32_get_section_contents to read sections contents, but nds32_get_section_contents has the wrong behaviour as it calls bfd_malloc_and_get_section. binutils testsuite: replace unresolved with unsupported
You'd think "unresolved" would be correct for an objcopy test when the assembler refuses to assemble one of our source files. After all, the test of objcopy hasn't been run. However, "unresolved" results in runtest returning with an error status. If instead we report "unsupported", runtest returns success. Which is a little less confusing to a user who doesn't see any errors reported unless they look in log files. * testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp: Report "unsupported" when gas or ld fails to build a testcase rather than "unresolved". ELF: Don't generate unused section symbols
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. ELF: Support .noinit and .persistent sections
The ".persistent" section is for data that should be initialized during load, but not during application reset. The ".noinit" section is for data that should not be initialized during load or application reset. Targets utilizing the elf.sc linker script template can define HAVE_{NOINIT,PERSISTENT}=yes to include the .noinit or .persistent output sections in the generated linker script. Support SHF_GNU_RETAIN ELF section flag
The SHF_GNU_RETAIN section flag is an extension to the GNU ELF OSABI. It is defined as follows: ========================================================= Section Attribute Flags +-------------------------------------+ | Name | Value | +-------------------------------------+ | SHF_GNU_RETAIN | 0x200000 (1 << 21) | +-------------------------------------+ SHF_GNU_RETAIN The link editor should not garbage collect the section. ========================================================= The .section directive accepts the "R" flag, which indicates SHF_GNU_RETAIN should be applied to the section. There is not a direct mapping of SHF_GNU_RETAIN to the BFD section flag SEC_KEEP. Keeping these flags distinct allows SHF_GNU_RETAIN sections to be explicitly removed by placing them in /DISCARD/. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf-bfd.h (enum elf_gnu_osabi): Add elf_gnu_osabi_retain. x86: Support GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] marker
GCC 11 supports -march=x86-64-v[234] to enable x86 micro-architecture ISA levels: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=97250 Update GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros: https://gitlab.com/x86-psABIs/x86-64-ABI/-/merge_requests/13 in x86 ELF binaries to indicate that micro-architecture ISA levels required to execute the binary: #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_NEEDED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_LO + 2) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_AND_LO + 2) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V2 (1U << 0) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V3 (1U << 1) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V4 (1U << 2) The previous GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros are deprecated and renamed to GNU_PROPERTY_X86_COMPAT_2_ISA_1_XXX. In addition to EM_X86_64, GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] marker can be used by ld.so to detect the x86-64-v4 shared library placed in an x86-64-v2 directory by mistake on an x86-64-v2 machine to avoid crashes on x86-64-v4 instructions. Add -z x86-64-v[234] linker command line option to mark x86-64-v[234] ISA level as needed. Recognize DW_LANG_C11 in readelf testsuite.
readelf_wi_test checks the DW_AT_LANGUAGE is recognized by matching against ANSI C. But for the new DWARF5 DW_LANG_C11 readelf simply prints "C11", not prefixed with ANSI (DW_LANG_C is "non-ANSI C", DW_LANG_C89 is "ANSI C" and DW_LANG_C99 is "ANSI-C99"). Adjust the testcase instead of readelf because C11 seems a fine name. binutils/ChangeLog: * testsuite/binutils-all/readelf.exp (readelf_wi_test): Also recognize DW_LANG_C11. |

MIPS/LD: Set symtab's `sh_info' correctly for IRIX emulations
Correct ELF linker code so as to set the `sh_info' value of the static symbol table section according to the section symbols vs other symbols split where required by the selection of the IRIX compatibility mode for MIPS target. Add a `elf_backend_elfsym_local_is_section' hook for that purpose, returning TRUE if it is only STB_LOCAL/STT_SECTION symbols that are to be considered local for the purpose of this split rather than all STB_LOCAL symbols. We do it already in generic ELF code, and have done it since 1993, with the `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook, affecting GAS and `objcopy', so these tools produce correct ELF output in the IRIX compatibility mode, however if such output is fed as input to `ld -r', then the linker's output is no longer valid for that mode. The relevant changes to generic ELF code are: commit |

binutils, testsuite: allow compilation before doing run_dump_test
The CTF assembler emitted by GCC has architecture-dependent pseudos in it, and is (obviously) tightly tied to a particular set of C source files with specific types in them. The CTF tests do run_dump_test on some candidate input, link it using the run_dump_test ld machinery, and compare objdump --ctf output. To avoid skew, we'd like to be able to easily regenerate the .s being scanned so that the .c doesn't get out of sync with it, but since GCC emits arch-dependent pseudos, we are forced to hand-hack the output every time (quite severely on some arches, like x86-32 and -64, where every single pseudo used is not only arch-dependent but undocumented). To avoid this, teach run_dump_test how to optionally compile things given new, optional additional flags passed in in the cc option. Only sources with the .c suffix are compiled, so there is no effect on any existing tests. The .s files go into the tmpdir, from which existing run_dump_test code picks them up as usual. binutils/ * testsuite/lib/binutils-common.exp (run_dump_test): Add 'cc' option. |
