ELF: Don't generate unused section symbols
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker outputs. bfd/ PR 27109 * aix386-core.c (core_aix386_vec): Initialize keep_unused_section_symbol to TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS. * aout-target.h (MY (vec)): Likewise. * binary.c (binary_vec): Likewise. * cisco-core.c (core_cisco_be_vec): Likewise. Silence warnings about incompatible plugins.
I have been looking at a Fedora bug report[1] from a user who was receiving warning messages from the BFD library about incompatible plugins. It turns out that they had both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the same plugin installed, and the BFD library was attempting to load all of them. After thinking about it for a while, it seemed to me that the simplest solution was to not warn about incompatible plugins whilst attempting to create a list of viable plugins. bfd_cleanup for object_p
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the target that allocated the memory. It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed. In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one. bfd/ * targets.c (bfd_cleanup): New typedef. PR24511, nm should not mark symbols in .init_array as "t"
This patch restricts the section names matched in coff_section_type, a function that translates section names to symbol type, and arranges to translate section flags to symbol type before looking at names. The latter change resulted in various test failures due to improper section flags being used in tests, and by the plugin support, so fix that too. The new test fails on many ELF targets that lack .init/fini_array in their scripts. I've just xfailed those. pru-elf oddly defines __init_array_begin rather than __init_array_start. I've left that target as a FAIL, and pj-elf too which reports an error for undefined weak symbols. bfd/ PR 24511 * syms.c (coff_section_type): Only allow '.', '$' and numeric following the standard section names. PR23254, ld.bfd mishandles file pointers while scanning archive
Best practice is to not mix lseek/read with fseek/fread on the same underlying file descriptor, as not all stdio implementations will cope. Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). For more details see: https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-02/msg00198.html PR 22823 Revert previous delta. Rewrite __start and __stop symbol handling
This arranges for __start and __stop symbols to be defined before garbage collection, for all target formats. That should allow the COFF and PE --gc-sections to keep a singleton orphan input section, a feature lost by 2017-06-13 commit |

Enable 64-bit archives in ar and ranlib
Since existing ld and gold support the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives, we can use the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives as 64-bit archives. Since the plugin target is used to create archive in plugin-enabled ar, we need a way to enable 64-bit archives in the plugin target. This patch adds --enable-64-bit-archive to bfd to force 64-bit archives in ar and ranlib. Since both 64-bit MIPS and s390 ELF targets currently use 64-bit archives, 64-bit archives are enabled by default for them. 64-bit archive is generated automatically if the archive is too big. Merge linker plugin handling into BFD plugin support
Linker plugin_maybe_claim is the interface of linker plugin support. This patch extracts linker plugin_maybe_claim into plugin_object_p and makes it available to BFD via a new function: void register_ld_plugin_object_p (const bfd_target *(*) (bfd *)); bfd_plugin_object_p calls plugin_object_p registered by linker first. Define bfd_find_line entry of BFD_JUMP_TABLE_SYMBOLS using NAME.
In https://www.sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2005-06/msg00082.html HJ implemented bfd_find_line for DWARF2, but cheated a little in not using the usual NAME##_find_line, saving quite a lot of boring editing. BFD: Add support for more than one plugin in lib/bfd-plugins
ar, nm and ranlib currently lack the ability to handle more than one plugin in lib/bfd-plugins. This patch reshuffles the logic in plugin.c to add this functionality. One can now place both llvm and gcc plugins in this directory and have them loaded automatically. Mixed gcc/llvm archives are also supported (but not very useful until ld.bfd and ld.gold also would load multiple plugins and use them to claim different object files).
