Avoid letting exceptions escape gdb_bfd_iovec_fileio_close (PR gdb/28080)
Before PR gdb/28080 was fixed by the previous patch, GDB was crashing like this: (gdb) detach Detaching from program: target:/any/program, process 3671843 Detaching from process 3671843 Ending remote debugging. That's the reason for the std::terminate. The previous patch fixed things such that the exception above isn't thrown anymore. However, it's possible that e.g., the remote connection drops just while a user types "nosharedlibrary", or some other reason that leads to objfile::~objfile, and then we end up the same std::terminate problem. Thus frame #8 seems like a good place to swallow exceptions. More so since in this spot we already ignore target_fileio_close return errors. That's what this commit does. Without the previous fix, we'd see: (gdb) detach Detaching from program: target:/any/program, process 2197701 Ending remote debugging. gdb: move bfd_open_from_target_memory to gdb_bfd
This function allows to create a BFD handle using an accessible memory range in a target memory. gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix Avoid hash table corruption in gdb_bfd.c
gdb caches BFDs that come from ordinary files. This code turns out to have a bug where the hash table can become corrupted, causing gdb to crash. When gdb_bfd_open opens the BFD, it uses fstat to get the BFD's mtime. This is used when inserting the entry into gdb_bfd_cache. Then, the function creates the gdb_bfd_data object as a side effect of calling new_reference. This object is used when finding objects in the hash table, and its constructor uses bfd_get_mtime. So, if the file changes between the time the BFD is put into the cache and the time that this object is created, the hash table will be incorrect. When the BFD is later deleted, its entry in the hash table will not be found, and at this point the hash table will point to invalid memory. This patch fixes the bug by ensuring that the mtime, and other relevant attributes comgin from stat, that are used for insertion are also used when creating the gdb_bfd_data. This obsoletes an earlier patch that had split this into two parts (surrounding a patch to use bfd_stat more consistently). Make exec-file-mismatch compare build IDs
The patch makes GDB do exec-file-mismatch validation by comparing build IDs instead of the current method of comparing filenames. Currently, the exec-file-mismatch feature simply compares filenames to decide whether the exec file loaded in gdb and the exec file the target reports is running match. This causes false positives when remote debugging, because it'll often be the case that the paths in the host and the target won't match. And of course misses the case of the files having the same name but being actually different files (e.g., different builds). gdb: use bfd_get_section_contents to read section contents in is_linked_with_cygwin_dll
The function is_linked_with_cygwin_dll currently uses gdb_bfd_map_section to get some section contents. This is not ideal because that memory, which is only used in this function, can't be released. Instead, it was suggested to use bfd_get_full_section_contents. However, bfd_get_full_section_contents returns a newly allocated buffer, which is not very practical to use with C++ automatic memory management constructs. I decided to make gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents, a small alternative to bfd_get_full_section_contents. It is a small wrapper around bfd_get_section_contents which returns the full contents of the section in a gdb::byte_vector. gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents could be used at many places that already allocate a vector of the size of the section and then call bfd_get_section_contents. Removes vec.c and vec.h from the source tree, and remove all the
remaining includes of vec.h. There should be no user visible changes
after this commit.
I did have a few issues rebuilding GDB after applying this patch due
to cached dependencies, I found that running this command in the build
directory resolved my build issues without requiring a 'make clean':

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Remove unnecessary casts of NULL
I noticed some unnecessary casts of NULL. This removes all the unnecessary ones, leaving only ones where we must ensure that NULL has pointer type for passing through varargs. Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). Remove new_bfd_ref
For gdb_bfd_ref_ptr, gdb already had a convenience function like the new gdb_ref_ptr::new_reference -- called new_bfd_ref. This patch removes it in favor of the new common function. While doing this I also noticed that the comment for gdb_bfd_open was incorrect (in a way related to reference counting), so this patch updates the comment as well. Fix gdb segv when objfile can't be opened
This fixes PR 16577.
This patch changes gdb_bfd_map_section to issue a warning rather than an error
if it is unable to read the object file, and sets the size of the section/frame
that it attempted to read to 0 on error.
The description of gdb_bfd_map_section states that it will try to read or map
the contents of the section SECT, and if successful, the section data is
returned and *SIZE is set to the size of the section data. This function was
throwing an error and leaving *SIZE as-is. Setting the section size to 0
indicates to dwarf2_build_frame_info that there is no data to read, otherwise
it will try to read from an invalid frame pointer.
Changing the error to a warning allows this to be handled gracefully.

Use class to manage BFD reference counts
This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref. If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next patch. I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD. I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. Class-ify ui_out
This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by
turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class
hierarchy. ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new
class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update.
In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and
ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate.
In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is
extended for CLI, TUI and MI.
It's a bit hard to maintain a ChangeLog for such a big patch, I did my
best but I'm sure there are some missing or outdated info in there...

Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for the mailing list. This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example: - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...) - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form of a void pointer - "user data" passed to some function This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted. Here's the ChangeLog entry. Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case more often than not). The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc. Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't know. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. Warn when accessing binaries from remote targets
GDB provides no indicator of progress during file operations, and can appear to have locked up during slow remote transfers. This commit updates GDB to print a warning each time a file is accessed over RSP. An additional message detailing how to avoid remote transfers is printed for the first transfer only. gdb/ChangeLog: * target.h (struct target_ops) <to_fileio_open>: New argument warn_if_slow. gdb: Improve cache matching criteria for the bfd cache.
Within gdb open bfd objects are reused where possible if an attempt is made to reopen a file that is already being debugged. To spot if the on disc file has changed gdb currently examines the mtime of the file and compares it to the mtime of the open bfd in the cache. A problem exists when the on disc file is being rapidly regenerated, as happens, for example, with automated testing. In some cases the file is generated so quickly that the mtime appears not to change, while the on disc file has changed. This patch extends the bfd cache to also hold the file size of the file, the inode of the file, and the device id of the file; gdb can then compare filename, file size, mtime, inode, and device id to determine if an existing bfd object can be reused. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdb_bfd.c (struct gdb_bfd_data): Add size, inode, and device id field. Move vgdb special case into remote_filesystem_is_local
Valgrind GDB (vgdb) presents itself as a remote target but works on the local filesystem. gdb_bfd_open contained a special case to make vgdb work with "target:" sysroots, but the implementation meant that GDB would fall back to the local filesystem if *any* to_fileio_open method failed with ENOSYS for *any* reason. This commit moves the vgdb special case to remote_filesystem_is_local to allow the fallback to be restricted only to the specific case that remote file transfer is unsupported. Make gdb_bfd_open able to open BFDs using target fileio
This commit updates gdb_bfd_open to access files using target fileio functions if the supplied path starts with "target:" and if the local and target filesystems are not the same. This allows users to specify "set sysroot target:" and have GDB access files locally or from the remote as appropriate. The new functions in gdb_bfd.c are copies of functions from remote.c.
