Use better test for usable compiler in ld testsuite.
The ld testsuite includes numerous tests that depend on being able to compile and link programs with the C compiler. Some of these tests use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present, it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc. This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts to build an empty program and caches the result. [PATCH, LD, AArch64] Fix ifunc testisms
This patch fixes some ifunc testisms after H.J. Lu's patch to enable the use of IFUNC pointers in position dependent code for binutils. See PR LD/23169 in binutils bugzilla. The aarch64 ifunc error message test was changed to no longer expect this error message as this is now an accepted combination. This patch also disables the executable tests added by H.J. ld testsuite use of notarget
Much of the time it is better to use xfail rather than notarget to hide a testsuite failure no one is planning on fixing. 1) When a target is fixed, an inappropriate xfail results in XPASS whereas notarget is silent. Leaving in an inappropriate notarget entry risks the bug reappearing later, silently. 2) Tests might be used as a template for a new test, carrying over notarget and/or xfail. Define various symbols conditionally in shared libraries
The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". Fix Sparc, s390 and AArch64 targets so that they can handle relocs against ifunc symbols found in note sections.
Following on from PR 22929, I have found the same problem exists with
other ifunc supporting targets too. Plus see this link for the bug
being reported against the s390x binutils for Fedora rawhide:

So I am going to check in the patch below which applies the same
change that H.J. made for the x86_64 target to the other affected
targets. (Specifically: S390, AArch64 and Sparc). Plus it adds a new
test to the linker testsuite to make sure that this problem stays
fixed.
bfd * elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Move check for
relocations against non-allocated sections to before the code that
handles ifunc relocations.
* elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_relocate_section): Likewise.
* elfnn-aarch64.c (elfNN_aarch64_final_link_relocate): Treat
relocs against IFUNC symbols in non-allocated sections as relocs
against FUNC symbols.
* elfxx-sparc.c (_bfd_sparc_elf_relocate_section): Likewise.
ld * testsuite/ld-ifunc/ifuncmod5.s: New test. Checks that targets
that support IFUNC symbols can handle relocations against those
symbols in NOTE sections.
* testsuite/ld-ifunc/ifuncmod5.d: New file: Driver for the new
test.
* testsuite/ld-ifunc/ifunc.exp: Run the new test.

readelf ngettext fixes
This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. Support different ld --hash-style in the ld testsuite

x86-64: Improve PLT generation and synthetic PLT symbols
On x86-64, the procedure linkage table (PLT) is used to
1. Call external function.
2. Call internal IFUNC function. The best implementation is selected
for the target processor at run-time.
3. Act as the canonical function address.
4. Support LD_AUDIT to audit external function calls.
5. Support LD_PROFILE to profile external function calls.
PLT looks like:

GOT is an array of addresses. Initially the GOT entry of name1 is
filled with the address of the "push name1_reloc_index" instruction.
The function, name1, is called via "jmp *GOT[name1]" in the PLT entry.
Even when lazy binding is disabled by "-z now", the PLT0 entry may
still be used with LD_AUDIT or LD_PROFILE if PLT entry is used for
canonical function address.
When linker is invoked with "-z bndplt", a different PLT layout in .plt
is used:

instruction of the corresponding entry in .plt.
1. With lazy binding, when the external function, name1, is called the
first time, dynamic linker is called via PLT0 to update GOT[name1_index]
with the actual address of name1 and transfers control to name1
afterwards.
2. PLT is also used to call a local IFUNC function, name1, run-time
loader updates GOT[name1_index] when loading the module.
This patch
1. Remove PLT layout configurations from x86-64 backend_data.
2. Add generic, lay and non-lazy PLT layout configurations to x86-64
link_hash_table. Generic PLT layout includes the PLT entry templates,
information how to update the first instruction in PLT and PLT eh_frame
informaton, which are initialized in x86-64 setup_gnu_properties, based
on "-z bndplt" and target selection. PLT section alignment is also set
to PLT entry size for non-NaCl target.
3. Remove elf_x86_64_create_dynamic_sections. create_dynamic_sections
isn't always called, but GOT relocations need GOT relocations. Instead,
create all x86-64 specific dynamic sections with alignment to their entry
size in x86-64 setup_gnu_properties, which initializes elf.dynobj, so
that x86-64 check_relocs can be simplified.
4. Rewrite elf_x86_64_get_synthetic_symtab to check PLT sections against
all dynamic relocations to support both lazy and non-lazy PLTs.
There is no change in PLT. The only externally visible change is the
improvement of synthetic PLT symbols for .plt.got.

i386: Improve PLT generation and synthetic PLT symbols
On i386, the procedure linkage table (PLT) is used to
1. Call external function.
2. Call internal IFUNC function. The best implementation is selected
for the target processor at run-time.
3. Act as the canonical function address.
4. Support LD_AUDIT to audit external function calls.
5. Support LD_PROFILE to profile external function calls.
PLT looks like:

jmp PLT0
GOT is an array of addresses. Initially the GOT entry of name1 is
filled with the address of the "push name1_reloc_index" instruction.
The function, name1, is called via "jmp *GOT[name1]" in the PLT entry.
Even when lazy binding is disabled by "-z now", the PLT0 entry may
still be used with LD_AUDIT or LD_PROFILE if PLT entry is used for
canonical function address.
1. With lazy binding, when the external function, name1, is called the
first time, dynamic linker is called via PLT0 to update GOT[name1_index]
with the actual address of name1 and transfers control to name1
afterwards.
2. PLT is also used to call a local IFUNC function, name1, run-time
loader updates GOT[name1_index] when loading the module.
This patch
1. Remove PLT layout configurations from i386 backend_data.
2. Add generic, lay and non-lazy PLT layout configurations to i386
link_hash_table. Generic PLT layout includes the PLT entry templates,
information how to update the first instruction in PLT and PLT eh_frame
informaton, which are initialized in i386 setup_gnu_properties, based
on PIC and target selection. PLT section alignment is also set to PLT
entry size for non-NaCl/VxWorks target.
3. Remove elf_i386_create_dynamic_sections. create_dynamic_sections
isn't always called, but GOT relocations need GOT relocations. Instead,
create all i386 specific dynamic sections in i386 setup_gnu_properties,
which initializes elf.dynobj, so that i386 check_relocs can be simplified.
4. Rewrite elf_i386_get_synthetic_symtab to check PLT sections against
all dynamic relocations to support both lazy and non-lazy PLTs.

Run more ld tests when not native
Many of the ld tests are not run for cross builds, in some cases because the test needs to run a newly linked executable, and in others simply because it was easier to write the test for native only. Even when a test needs to run, it's good to compile and link to exercise the linker. So that's what this patch does. I've also rid us of the old ld_link procedure with all the HOSTING_CRT0 etc. setup. It's much simpler to just link with $CC. This does mean that a cross build with cross-compiler installed but no cross C-library will give lots of failures. If that turns out to be too annoying, I guess we can write a tcl procedure to detect it and not run all the extra tests. * Makefile.am (bootstrap): Delete rule. Enhance objdump so that it will use .got, .plt and .plt.got section symbols when disassembling, and it will use dynamic relocs to interpret entries in the PLT and GOT.
binutils * objdump.c (is_significant_symbol_name): New function. (remove_useless_symbols): Do not remove significanr symbols. (find_symbol_for_address): If an exact match for the specified address has not been found, try scanning the dynamic relocs to see if one of these matches the address. If so, use the symbol associated with the reloc. (objdump_print_addr_with_symbol): Do not print offsets to symbols with no value. (disassemble_section): Only use dynamic relocs if the user requested this. i386: Issue an error on non-PIC call to IFUNC in PIC object
On i386, IFUNC function must be called via PLT. Since PLT in PIC object uses EBX register, R_386_PLT32 relocation must be used to call IFUNC function even when IFUNC function is defined locally. Linker should issue an error when R_386_PC32 relocation is used to call IFUNC function. Don't generate PLT for IFUNC GOT/pointer reference
If a backend supports it, PLT entry isn't needed when all references to a STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols are done via GOT or static function pointers. For GOT entries, We generate dynamic R_*_GLOB_DAT relocations for preemptable symbols and R_*_IRELATIVE relocations for non-preemptable symbols to update them with real function address. For static pointer pointers, we generate dynamic pointer relocations and store them in: 1. .rel[a].ifunc section in PIC object. 2. .rel[a].got section in dynamic executable. 3. .rel[a].iplt section in static executable. We don't allocate GOT entry if it isn't used. bfd/ PR ld/20253 * elf-bfd.h (_bfd_elf_allocate_ifunc_dyn_relocs): Add an bfd_boolean argument. * elf-ifunc.c (_bfd_elf_create_ifunc_sections): Replace "shared object" with "PIC object" in comments. Optimize x86 GOT32X/GOTPCRELX relocations
R_386_GOT32X, R_X86_64_GOTPCRELX and R_X86_64_REX_GOTPCRELX relocations retrieve the symbol address via its GOT slot. If the symbol address is known at the link-time, we can use it directly by changing instruction encoding. Indirect branch can only be converted to PC relative direct branch. MOV can be changed to LEA or encoded differently with signed address. The subset of binary operations can be encoded only with signed address. If undefined weak symbol is resolved to zero link-time, we can use it as address. Zero addresss can't used with PC relative direct branch when PIC is true since the current PC is unknown. In 64-bit, 32-bit relocation for PC relatiave direct branch to zero may also overflow. Add -mrelax-relocations= to x86 assembler
The x86 relax relocations introduced in binutils 2.26 aren't supported by linker on Solaris older than Solaris 12. To use x86 assembler with older Solaris linker, this patch adds 1. A command line option -mrelax-relocations= to x86 assembler to control whether to generate relax relocations. 2. A configure option --enable-x86-relax-relocations to decide whether x86 assembler should generate relax relocations by default. Add R_X86_64_[REX_]GOTPCRELX support to gas and ld
This patch adds support for the R_X86_64_GOTPCRELX and R_X86_64_REX_GOTPCRELX relocations proposed in https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/x86-64-abi/n9AWHogmVY0 to gas and ld. It updates gas to generate R_X86_64_GOTPCRELX, R_X86_64_REX_GOTPCRELX if there is a REX prefix, relocation for memory operand, foo@GOTPCREL(%rip). With the locally defined symbol, foo, we convert mov foo@GOTPCREL(%rip), %reg to lea foo(%rip), %reg and convert call/jmp *foo@GOTPCREL(%rip) to nop call foo/jmp foo nop When PIC is false, convert test %reg, foo@GOTPCREL(%rip) to test $foo, %reg and convert binop foo@GOTPCREL(%rip), %reg to binop $foo, %reg where binop is one of adc, add, and, cmp, or, sbb, sub, xor instructions. bfd/ * elf64-x86-64.c: Include opcode/i386.h.
