50888e42dc gdb: change functions returning value contents to use gdb::array_view
The bug fixed by this [1] patch was caused by an out-of-bounds access to
a value's content. The code gets the value's content (just a pointer)
and then indexes it with a non-sensical index.

This made me think of changing functions that return value contents to
return array_views instead of a plain pointer. This has the advantage
that when GDB is built with _GLIBCXX_DEBUG, accesses to the array_view
are checked, making bugs more apparent / easier to find.

This patch changes the return types of these functions, and updates
callers to call .data() on the result, meaning it's not changing
anything in practice. Additional work will be needed (which can be done
little by little) to make callers propagate the use of array_view and
reap the benefits.

cd3f655cc7 gdb: add accessors for field (and call site) location
Add accessors for the various location values in struct field. This
lets us assert that when we get a location value of a certain kind (say,
bitpos), the field's location indeed contains a value of that kind.

Remove the SET_FIELD_* macros, instead use the new setters directly.
Update the FIELD_* macros used to access field locations to go through
the getters. They will be removed in a subsequent patch.

There are places where the FIELD_* macros are used on call_site_target
structures, because it contains members of the same name (loc_kind and
loc). For now, I have replicated the getters/setters in
call_site_target. But we could perhaps eventually factor them in a
"location" structure that can be used at both places.

Note that the field structure, being zero-initialized, defaults to a
bitpos location with value 0. While writing this patch, I tried to make
it default to an "unset" location, to catch places where we would miss
setting a field's location. However, I found that some places relied on
the default being "bitpos 0", so I left it as-is. This change could
always be done as follow-up work, making these places explicitly set the
"bitpos 0" location.

I found two issues to fix:

 - I got some failures in the gdb.base/infcall-nested-structs-c++.exp
   test. They were caused by two functions in amd64-tdep.c using
   TYPE_FIELD_BITPOS before checking if the location is of the bitpos
   kind, which they do indirectly through `field_is_static`. Simply
   move getting the bitpos below the field_is_static call.

 - I got a failure in gdb.xml/tdesc-regs.exp. It turns out that in
   make_gdb_type_enum, we set enum field values using SET_FIELD_BITPOS,
   and later access them through FIELD_ENUMVAL. Fix that by using
   set_loc_enumval to set the value.

3456e70c9d Use unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> when demangling
I noticed that some methods in language_defn could use
unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> rather than a plain 'char *'. This patch
implements this change, fixing up the fallout and changing
gdb_demangle to also return this type. In one spot, std::string is
used to simplify some related code, and in another, an auto_obstack is
used to avoid manual management.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 34.

d3fd12dfc5 gdb: add field::name / field::set_name
Add the `name` and `set_name` methods on `struct field`, in order to
remove `FIELD_NAME` and `TYPE_FIELD_NAME` macros. In this patch, the
macros are changed to use `field::name`, so all the call sites that are
used to set the field's name are changed to use `field::set_name`.
The next patch will remove the macros completely.

Note that because of the name clash between the existing field named
`name` and the new method, I renamed the field `m_name`. It is not
private per-se, because we can't make `struct field` a non-POD yet, but
it should be considered private anyway (not accessed outside `struct
field`).

328d42d87e gdb: remove current_top_target function
The current_top_target function is a hidden dependency on the current
inferior. Since I'd like to slowly move towards reducing our dependency
on the global current state, remove this function and make callers use

  current_inferior ()->top_target ()

There is no expected change in behavior, but this one step towards
making those callers use the inferior from their context, rather than
refer to the global current inferior.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* target.h (current_top_target): Remove, make callers use the
	current inferior instead.
	* target.c (current_top_target): Remove.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

8c2e4e0689 gdb: add accessors to struct dynamic_prop
Add setters, to ensure that the kind and value of the property are
always kept in sync (a caller can't forget one or the other). Add
getters, such that we can assert that when a caller accesses a data bit
of the property, the property is indeed of the corresponding kind.

Note that because of the way `struct dynamic_prop` is allocated
currently, we can't make the `m_kind` and `m_data` fields private. That
would make the type non-default-constructible, and we would have to call
the constructor when allocating them. However, I still prefixed them
with `m_` to indicate that they should not be accessed from outside the
class (and also to be able to use the name `kind` for the method).

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* gdbtypes.h (struct dynamic_prop) <kind, set_undefined,
	const_val, set_const_val, baton, set_locexpr, set_loclist,
	set_addr_offset, variant_parts, set_variant_parts,

	<m_kind>: ... this. Update all users to use the new methods

	<data>: Rename to...

5d14b6e5d6 gdb: add field::type / field::set_type
Add the `type` and `set_type` methods on `struct field`, in order to
remoremove the `FIELD_TYPE` macro. In this patch, the `FIELD_TYPE`
macro is changed to use `field::type`, so all the call sites that are
useused to set the field's type are changed to use `field::set_type`.
The next patch will remove `FIELD_TYPE` completely.

Note that because of the name clash between the existing field named
`type` and the new method, I renamed the field `m_type`. It is not
private per-se, because we can't make `struct field` a non-POD yet, but
it should be considered private anyway (not accessed outside `struct
field`).

48448202d7 gdb: Convert language la_pass_by_reference field to a method
This commit changes the language_data::la_pass_by_reference function
pointer member variable into a member function of language_defn.

The interesting thing in this commit is that I have removed the
default_pass_by_reference function entirely. This function only ever
returned a language_pass_by_ref_info struct in its default state, so
all uses of this function can be replaced by just default
initialisation of a language_pass_by_ref_info variable.

There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

ceacbf6edf gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field.

Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots
are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function
attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening
with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a
really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it.

5e33d5f4e1 gdb: add type::num_fields / type::set_num_fields
Add the `num_fields` and `set_num_fields` methods on `struct type`, in
order to remove the `TYPE_NFIELDS` macro. In this patch, the
`TYPE_NFIELDS` macro is changed to use `type::num_fields`, so all the
call sites that are used to set the number of fields are changed to use
`type::set_num_fields`. The next patch will remove `TYPE_NFIELDS`
completely.

I think that in the future, we should consider making the interface of
`struct type` better. For example, right now it's possible for the
number of fields property and the actual number of fields set to be out
of sync. However, I want to keep the existing behavior in this patch,
just translate from macros to methods.

596dc4adff Speed up psymbol reading by removing a copy
I noticed that cp_canonicalize_string and friends copy a
unique_xmalloc_ptr to a std::string.  However, this copy isn't
genuinely needed anywhere, and it serves to slow down DWARF psymbol
reading.

This patch removes the copy and updates the callers to adapt.

This speeds up the reader from 1.906 seconds (mean of 10 runs, of gdb
on a copy of itself) to 1.888 seconds (mean of 10 runs, on the same
copy as the first trial).

7d79de9a4b Add support for variable field offsets
In Ada, a field can have a variable offset. This patch adds support
for this case to gdb, using the existing dynamic type resolution code.

Doing just this, though, would break C++ virtual base handling.

It turns out that virtual base handling only worked by the ugliest of
hacks. In particular, the DWARF reader would call decode_locdesc for
a virtual base location. Here's an example of such an expression from
gdb's m-static test case:

    <241>   DW_AT_data_member_location: 6 byte block: 12 6 48 1c 6 22 	(DW_OP_dup; DW_OP_deref; DW_OP_lit24; DW_OP_minus; DW_OP_deref; DW_OP_plus)

When examining this, decode_locdesc would treat DW_OP_deref as a no-op
and compute some answer (here, -24). This would be stored as the
offset.

Later, in gnu-v3-abi.c, the real offset would be computed by digging
around in the vtable.

This patch cleans up this area. In particular, it now evaluates the
location expression on demand.

Note there is a new FIXME in gnu-v3-abi.c. I think some of the
callers are incorrect here, and have only worked because this member
is unused. I will file a bug for this. I didn't fix this problem in
this series because I felt it was already too complex.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

62bf63d74d infcall, c++: collect more pass-by-reference information
Walk through a given type to collect information about whether the
type is copy constructible, destructible, trivially copyable,
trivially copy constructible, trivially destructible. The previous
algorithm returned only a boolean result about whether the type is
trivially copyable. This patch computes more info. Additionally, it
utilizes DWARF attributes that were previously not taken into account;
namely, DW_AT_deleted, DW_AT_defaulted, and DW_AT_calling_convention.

Tankut Baris Aktemur
9d084466d7 infcall, c++: allow more info to be computed for pass-by-reference values
In C++, call-by-value arguments that cannot be trivially copied are
implicitly passed by reference. When making an infcall, GDB needs to
find out if an argument is pass-by-reference or not, so that the
correct semantics can be followed. This patch enriches the
information computed by the language ops for pass-by-reference
arguments. Instead of a plain binary result, the computed information
now includes whether the argument is

  - copy constructible
  - destructible
  - trivially copyable
  - trivially copy constructible
  - trivially destructible

This information is stored in a struct named 'language_pass_by_ref_info'.

This patch paves the way for GDB's infcall mechanism to call the copy
ctor and the destructor of a pass-by-ref argument appropriately.

Peeter Joot
34877895ca Adjust byte order variable display/change if DW_AT_endianity is present.
- Rationale:
It is possible for compilers to indicate the desired byte order
interpretation of scalar variables using the DWARF attribute:
   DW_AT_endianity

A type flagged with this variable would typically use one of:
   DW_END_big
   DW_END_little
which instructs the debugger what the desired byte order interpretation
of the variable should be.

The GCC compiler (as of V6) has a mechanism for setting the desired byte
ordering of the fields within a structure or union. For, example, on a
little endian target, a structure declared as:
   struct big {
       int v;
       short a[4];
   } __attribute__( ( scalar_storage_order( "big-endian" ) ) );
could be used to ensure all the structure members have a big-endian
interpretation (the compiler would automatically insert byte swap
instructions before and after respective store and load instructions).

- To reproduce
GCC V8 is required to correctly emit DW_AT_endianity DWARF attributes
in all situations when the scalar_storage_order attribute is used.

A fix for (dwarf endianity instrumentation) for GCC V6-V7 can be found
in the URL field of the following PR:
   https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=82509

- Test-case:
A new test case (testsuite/gdb.base/endianity.*) is included with this
patch.

Manual testing for mixed endianity code has also been done with GCC V8.
See:
   https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=82509#c4

- Observed vs. expected:

Without this change, using scalar_storage_order that doesn't match the
target, such as

struct otherendian
{
  int v;
} __attribute__( ( scalar_storage_order( "big-endian" ) ) );

would behave like the following on a little endian target:

   Breakpoint 1 at 0x401135: file endianity.c, line 41.
   (gdb) run
   Starting program: /home/pjoot/freeware/t/a.out
   Missing separate debuginfos, use: debuginfo-install glibc-2.17-292.el7.x86_64

   Breakpoint 1, main () at endianity.c:41
   41        struct otherendian o = {3};
   (gdb) n
   43        do_nothing (&o); /* START */
   (gdb) p o
   $1 = {v = 50331648}
   (gdb) p /x
   $2 = {v = 0x3000000}

whereas with this gdb enhancement we can access the variable with the user
specified endianity:

   Breakpoint 1, main () at endianity.c:41
   41        struct otherendian o = {3};
   (gdb) p o
   $1 = {v = 0}
   (gdb) n
   43        do_nothing (&o); /* START */
   (gdb) p o
   $2 = {v = 3}
   (gdb) p o.v = 4
   $3 = 4
   (gdb) p o.v
   $4 = 4
   (gdb) x/4xb &o.v
   0x7fffffffd90c: 0x00    0x00    0x00    0x04

(observe that the 4 byte int variable has a big endian representation in the
 hex dump.)

7f6aba03b9 Introduce metadata style
This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb
to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output
from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the
inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb
traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>".

I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is
difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the
implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions.

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

3d6e9d2336 Make exceptions use std::string and be self-managing
This changes the exception's "message" member to be a shared_ptr
wrapping a std::string. This allows removing the stack of exception
messages, because now exceptions will self-destruct when needed. This
also adds a noexcept copy constructor and operator= to gdb_exception,
plus a "what" method.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

8b88a78e63 target_stack -> current_top_target() throughout
The recent C++ification of target_ops replaced references to the old
"current_target" squashed target throughout with references to a
"target_stack" pointer. I had picked the "target_stack" name very
early in the multi-target work, and managed to stick with it, even
though it's a bit of a misnomer, since it isn't really a "target
stack" object, but a pointer into the current top target in the stack.
As I'm splitting more pieces off of the multi-target branch, I've come
to think that it's better to rename it now. A following patch will
introduce a new class to represent a target stack, and "target_stack"
would be _its_ ideal name. (In the branch, the class is called
a_target_stack to work around the clash.)

Thus this commit renames target_stack to current_top_target and
replaces all references throughout. Also, while at it,
current_top_target is made a function instead of a pointer, to make it
possible to change its internal implementation without leaking
implementation details out. In a couple patches, the implementation
of the function will change to refer to a target stack object, and
then further down the multi-target work, it'll change again to find
the right target stack for the current inferior.

e86ca25fd6 Remove TYPE_TAG_NAME
TYPE_TAG_NAME has been an occasional source of confusion and bugs. It
seems to me that it is only useful for C and C++ -- but even there,
not so much, because at least with DWARF there doesn't seem to be any
way to wind up with a type where the name and the tag name are both
non-NULL and different.

So, this patch removes TYPE_TAG_NAME entirely. This should save a
little memory, but more importantly, it simplifies this part of gdb.

A few minor test suite adjustments were needed. In some situations
the new code does not yield identical output to the old code.

f6ac5f3d63 Convert struct target_ops to C++
I.e., use C++ virtual methods and inheritance instead of tables of
function pointers.

Unfortunately, there's no way to do a smooth transition. ALL native
targets in the tree must be converted at the same time. I've tested
all I could with cross compilers and with help from GCC compile farm,
but naturally I haven't been able to test many of the ports. Still, I
made a best effort to port everything over, and while I expect some
build problems due to typos and such, which should be trivial to fix,
I don't expect any design problems.

* Implementation notes:

- The flattened current_target is gone. References to current_target
  or current_target.beneath are replaced with references to
  target_stack (the top of the stack) directly.

- To keep "set debug target" working, this adds a new debug_stratum
  layer that sits on top of the stack, prints the debug, and delegates
  to the target beneath.

  In addition, this makes the shortname and longname properties of
  target_ops be virtual methods instead of data fields, and makes the
  debug target defer those to the target beneath. This is so that
  debug code sprinkled around that does "if (debugtarget) ..." can
  transparently print the name of the target beneath.

  A patch later in the series actually splits out the
  shortname/longname methods to a separate structure, but I preferred
  to keep that chance separate as it is associated with changing a bit
  the design of how targets are registered and open.

- Since you can't check whether a C++ virtual method is overridden,
  the old method of checking whether a target_ops implements a method
  by comparing the function pointer must be replaced with something
  else.

  Some cases are fixed by adding a parallel "can_do_foo" target_ops
  methods.  E.g.,:

    +  for (t = target_stack; t != NULL; t = t->beneath)
	 {
    -      if (t->to_create_inferior != NULL)
    +      if (t->can_create_inferior ())
	    break;
	 }

  Others are fixed by changing void return type to bool or int return
  type, and have the default implementation return false or -1, to
  indicate lack of support.

- make-target-delegates was adjusted to generate C++ classes and
  methods.

  It needed tweaks to grok "virtual" in front of the target method
  name, and for the fact that methods are no longer function pointers.
  (In particular, the current code parsing the return type was simple
  because it could simply parse up until the '(' in '(*to_foo)'.

  It now generates a couple C++ classes that inherit target_ops:
  dummy_target and debug_target.

  Since we need to generate the class declarations as well, i.e., we
  need to emit methods twice, we now generate the code in two passes.

- The core_target global is renamed to avoid conflict with the
  "core_target" class.

- ctf/tfile targets

  init_tracefile_ops is replaced by a base class that is inherited by
  both ctf and tfile.

- bsd-uthread

  The bsd_uthread_ops_hack hack is gone. It's not needed because
  nothing was extending a target created by bsd_uthread_target.

- remote/extended-remote targets

  This is a first pass, just enough to C++ify target_ops.

  A later pass will convert more free functions to methods, and make
  remote_state be truly per remote instance, allowing multiple
  simultaneous instances of remote targets.

- inf-child/"native" is converted to an actual base class
  (inf_child_target), that is inherited by all native targets.

- GNU/Linux

  The old weird double-target linux_ops mechanism in linux-nat.c, is
  gone, replaced by adding a few virtual methods to linux-nat.h's
  target_ops, called low_XXX, that the concrete linux-nat
  implementations override. Sort of like gdbserver's
  linux_target_ops, but simpler, for requiring only one
  target_ops-like hierarchy, which spares implementing the same method
  twice when we need to forward the method to a low implementation.
  The low target simply reimplements the target_ops method directly in
  that case.

  There are a few remaining linux-nat.c hooks that would be better
  converted to low_ methods like above too. E.g.:

   linux_nat_set_new_thread (t, x86_linux_new_thread);
   linux_nat_set_new_fork (t, x86_linux_new_fork);
   linux_nat_set_forget_process

  That'll be done in a follow up patch.

- We can no longer use functions like x86_use_watchpoints to install
  custom methods on an arbitrary base target.

  The patch replaces instances of such a pattern with template mixins.
  For example memory_breakpoint_target defined in target.h, or
  x86_nat_target in x86-nat.h.

- linux_trad_target, MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux

  The code in the new linux-nat-trad.h/c files which was split off of
  inf-ptrace.h/c recently, is converted to a C++ base class, and used
  by the MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux ports.

- BSD targets

  The

    $architecture x NetBSD/OpenBSD/FreeBSD

  support matrix complicates things a bit. There's common BSD target
  code, and there's common architecture-specific code shared between
  the different BSDs. Currently, all that is stiched together to form
  a final target, via the i386bsd_target, x86bsd_target,
  fbsd_nat_add_target functions etc.

  This introduces new fbsd_nat_target, obsd_nat_target and
  nbsd_nat_target classes that serve as base/prototype target for the
  corresponding BSD variant.

  And introduces generic i386/AMD64 BSD targets, to be used as
  template mixin to build a final target. Similarly, a generic SPARC
  target is added, used by both BSD and Linux ports.

- bsd_kvm_add_target, BSD libkvm target

  I considered making bsd_kvm_supply_pcb a virtual method, and then
  have each port inherit bsd_kvm_target and override that method, but
  that was resulting in lots of unjustified churn, so I left the
  function pointer mechanism alone.

e95a97d41a Fix watching structs in C++
Some of the watchpoint logic depends on the fact that the head of the
value chain represents the user-specified value to watch. Thus no
additional values should be added to the value chain after that. However,
if a watchpoint is defined for a C++ structure/class object, then run-time
type information (RTTI) may be present. Thus, while constructing the
value chain for the watchpoint, the dynamic type is fetched by
gnuv3_rrti_type, which invokes value_addr, which then adds a new value to
the head of the value chain. This new value represents the pointer to the
structure instead of the structure itself.

With such a "polluted" value chain the watchpoint logic does not recognize
when the user intended to watch a struct, and can_use_hardware_watchpoint
returns zero. Instead of a hardware watchpoint, a software watchpoint
will then be set for no apparent reason.

This is fixed by adding an early exit to gnuv3_rtti_type when the input
value is not a dynamic class object.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

	* gdb.cp/watch-cp.cc: New test.
	* gdb.cp/watch-cp.exp: New file.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* gnu-v3-abi.c (gnuv3_rtti_type): Add early exit if the given
	value is not a dynamic class object.

77b7c781e9 Make init_type/arch_type take a size in bits
This changes the interfaces to init_type and arch_type to take the
type length in bits as input (instead of as bytes). The routines
assert that the length is a multiple of TARGET_CHAR_BIT.

For consistency, arch_flags_type is changed likewise, so that now
all type creation interfaces always use length in bits.

All callers are updated in the straightforward manner.

The assert actually found a bug in read_range_type, where the
init_integer_type routine was called with a wrong argument (probably
a bug introduced with the conversion to use init_integer_type).

fc4007c969 Remove make_cleanup_htab_delete
This removes make_cleanup_htab_delete in favor of destructors,
building on an earlier patch that added the htab_up typedef.

2f408ecb92 Use ui_file_as_string throughout more
This replaces most of the remaining ui_file_xstrdup calls with
ui_file_as_string calls. Whenever a call was replaced, that led to a
cascade of other necessary adjustments throughout, to make the code
use std::string instead of raw pointers. And then whenever I added a
std::string as member of a struct, I needed to adjust
allocation/destruction of said struct to use new/delete instead of
xmalloc/xfree.

The stopping point was once gdb built again. These doesn't seem to be
a way to reasonably split this out further.

Maybe-not-obvious changes:

 - demangle_for_lookup returns a cleanup today. To get rid of that,
   and avoid unnecessary string dupping/copying, this introduces a
   demangle_result_storage type that the caller instantiates and
   passes to demangle_for_lookup.

 - Many methods returned a "char *" to indicate that the caller owns
   the memory and must free it. Those are switched to return a
   std::string instead. Methods that return a "view" into some
   internal string return a "const char *" instead. I.e., we only
   copy/allocate when necessary.

4d01a485d2 'struct expression *' -> gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<expression>
This patch makes parse_expression and friends return a unique_ptr
instead of raw pointer [1]:

  typedef gdb::unique_malloc_ptr<expression> expression_up;

and then adjusts the codebase throughout to stop using cleanups to
manage lifetime of expression pointers.

Whenever I found a structure owning an expression pointer, I made it
store a unique_ptr instead of a raw pointer, which then requires using
new/delete of the holding structure, instead of XNEW/xfree.

[1] - I'd like to set the rule that types named with an "_up" suffix
      are unique_ptr typedefs.

Note I used gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr instead of gdb::unique_ptr, simply
because we still use xmalloc instead of new to allocate expression
objects. Once that's changed, all we need to do is change the
expression_up typedef and the smart pointer will then call delete
instead of xfree.

9c37b5aed9 Remove Java support
This patch removes the Java support from gdb. gcj has not seen much
development or use for years now, and was recently removed from GCC.
This patch changes gdb to follow; in the unlikely event that there are
still users using gcj, they can continue to use an older gdb to debug.
Or, they can debug in C++ mode.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 24.
