fd67aa1129 Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover
bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then
updates copyright messages as follows:

1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights.
2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external
author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite
files (which should have their copyright message removed).
3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes.
4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

6785fd72d5 PE dos_message
I was looking at dos_message and wondering why we have H_PUT_32
in _bfd_XXi_only_swap_filehdr_out but no H_GET_32 in pe_bfd_object_p.
On a big-endian machine this would result in scrambling the code and
strings constained in dos_message. Rather than fix the lack of
H_GET_32 in pe_bfd_object_p, I decided it doesn't make sense to store
dos_message internally as an array of ints.

ba75d1c55c _bfd_free_cached_info
doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this
function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would
be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything
about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this
function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when
creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away
symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to
tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the
target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore
sometimes will result in memory leaks.

This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the
target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info.
Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now
defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true,
ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.

90fd5049bd section_by_target_index memory leak
The rs6000 backend can call coff_section_from_bfd_index from its
object_p function via coff_set_alignment_hook. If the object doesn't
match, or another target matches too, then the hash table needs to be
freed via a cleanup.

717d4bd6d1 Generated docs and include files
bfd/doc/chew.c extracts documentation from source code comments
annotated with keywords, and generates much of bfd.h and libbfd.h from
those same comments. The docs have suffered from people (me too)
adding things like CODE_FRAGMENT to the source to put code into bfd.h
without realising that CODE_FRAGMENT also puts @example around said
code into the docs. So we have random senseless things in the docs.
This patch fixes that problem (well, the senseless things from
CODE_FRAGMENT), moves most of the code out of bfd-in.h, and improves a
few chew.c features. libbfd.h now automatically gets ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN
prototypes, and indentation in bfd.h and libbfd.h is better.

695c322803 coffgrok access of u.auxent.x_sym.x_tagndx.p
u.auxent.x_sym.x_tagndx is a union. The p field is only valid when
fix_tag is set. This patch fixes code in coffgrok.c that accessed the
field without first checking fix_tag, and removes a whole lot of code
validating bogus pointers to prevent segfaults (which no longer
happen, I checked the referenced PR 17512 testcases). The patch also
documents this in the fix_tag comment, makes is_sym a bitfield, and
sorts the selecter fields a little.

bfd/
	* coffcode.h (combined_entry_type): Make is_sym a bitfield.
Sort and comment on union selectors.
	* libcoff.h: Regenerate.

	* coffgrok.c (do_type): Make aux a combined_entry_type.  Test

22a95e1a37 Make coff backend data read-only
The bfd_coff_backend_data struct should be read-only, the only thing
preventing this is that objcopy writes to one of the fields,
_bfd_coff_long_section_names. This patch creates a copy of the field
in bfd coff_obj_tdata, which makes more sense anyway. When enabling
long section names the intent is to do so for a particular bfd, not
for all bfds that might happen to be using the target xvec.

bfd/

6e7a29c7de bfd: Add bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt functions like bfd_find_nearest_line with
the addition of a parameter for specifying the filename of a supplementary
debug file such as one referenced by .gnu_debugaltlink or .debug_sup.

This patch focuses on implementing bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
support for ELF/DWARF2 .gnu_debugaltlink. For other targets this
function simply sets the invalid_operation bfd_error.

20bed3bb35 COFF: use hash for string table also when copying / stripping
Otherwise the string table may grow and hence e.g. change a final binary
(observed with PE/COFF ones) even if really there's no change. Doing so
in fact reduces the overall amount of code, and in particular the number
of places which need to remain in sync.

Afaics there's no real equivalent to the "traditional_format" field used
when linking, so hashing is always enabled when copying / stripping.

breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

f717994fe8 [PATCH v2 2/2] coff-go32: support extended relocations
This patch extends the relocation and line number counters for
coff-go32 and coff-go32-exe to 32 bits. As I understand it works the
same as for PE-COFF:

If the number of relocations in an object file exceeds 65534, the
NRELOC field is set to 65535 and the actual number of relocations is
stored in the VADDR field of the first relocation entry.

Executable files have no relocations, and thus the NRELOC field is
repurposed to extend NLNNO to 32-bits.

4d095f5b5e coff-go32-exe: support variable-length stubs
The stub size in GO32 executables has historically been fixed at 2048
bytes, due to hardcoded limitations in bfd. Recent patches to djgpp by
Stas Sergeev (CC'd) have pushed the stub right up to this limit, so if
any further expansion is desired, this must first be patched in bfd.

This series includes three patches: The first changes the meaning of
the bfd->origin field slightly, so that target code can use this to
specify an offset into the file where the actual bfd is located.
The second patch then uses this to enable support for variable-sized
stubs in the coff-go32-exe format.
The final patch is only a cleanup, it normalizes function and variable
names in coff-stgo32.c so that they all begin with the same prefix.

cb001c0d28 bfd_cleanup for object_p
The object_p (and archive_p, core_file_p) functions are not supposed
to have any target specific malloc'd memory attached to the bfd on
their return. This should be obvious on a failure return, but it's
also true for a successful return. The reason is that even though the
object_p recognises the file, that particular target may not be used
and thus the bfd won't be closed calling close_and_cleanup for the
target that allocated the memory.

It turns out that the object_p bfd_target* return value isn't needed.
In all cases except ld/plugin.c the target is abfd->xvec and with
ld/plugin.c the target isn't used. So this patch returns a cleanup
function from object_p instead, called in bfd_check_format_matches to
tidy the bfd before trying a different target match. The only cleanup
that does anything at this stage is the alpha-vms one.

270f824531 bfd: don't produce corrupt COFF symbol table due to long ELF file name symbols
The re-writing logic in _bfd_coff_final_link() overwrote the ".file"
part of the symbol table entry, due to not coping with the auxiliary
entry generated in all cases.

Note that while I would have wanted to add a test case,
(a) I didn't spot any one testing the base functionality here, and
(b) I wasn't able to figure out proper conditionals to use in e.g.
ld-elf/elf.exp to check for the necessary PE/PE+ support (which
    varies by target).

fb167eb272 Merge bfd_find_nearest_line variants
When bfd_find_nearest_line_discriminator was added, not enough care

9c461f7dba Define bfd_find_line entry of BFD_JUMP_TABLE_SYMBOLS using NAME.
In https://www.sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2005-06/msg00082.html
HJ implemented bfd_find_line for DWARF2, but cheated a little in not
using the usual NAME##_find_line, saving quite a lot of boring
editing. However that shortcut probably contributed to
bfd_find_nearest_line_discriminator being implemented the same way,
and missing support for some targets.
