sim: unify reserved instruction bits settings Move these options up to the common dir so we only test & export them once across all ports. The setting only affects igen based ports, and they were turning this on by default, so keep the default in place.

sim: unify scache settings The cgen scache module is enabled by every cgen port, and with the same default value of 16k (which matches the common default value). Let's pull this option out of the individual ports (via CPPFLAGS) and into the common code (via config.h). The object itself is compiled only for cgen ports atm, so that part doesn't change. The scache code is initialized dynamically via the modules.c logic. That's why the profile code needs an additional CGEN_ARCH check. This will allow us to collapse arch configure files more. Merging the source files will require more future work, but integrating the cgen & non-cgen worlds itself will take a lot.

sim: move default model to the runtime sim state This kills off another compile-time option by moving the setting to the individual arch runtimes. This will allow dynamic selection by the arch when doing a single build with multiple arches. The sim_model_init rework is a little funky. In the past it was disabled entirely if no default model was set. We maintain the spirit of the logic by gating the fallback logic on whether the port has defined any models.

sim: hw: rework configure option & device selection The sim-hardware configure option allows builders to select a set of device models to enable. But this seems like unnecessary overkill: the existence of individual device models doesn't affect performance at all as they are only enabled at runtime if the config uses them, and individually these are all <5KB a piece. Stripping off a total of ~50KB from a ~1MB binary doesn't seem useful, and it's extremely unlikely anyone will ever bother. So let's simplify the configure/make logic by turning sim-hardware into a boolean option like many of the other sim options. Any ports that have unique device models will declare them in their Makefile instead of at configure time. This will allow us to (eventually) unify the setting into the common dir.

sim: overhaul & unify endian settings management The m4 macro has 2 args: the "wire" settings (which represents the hardwired port behavior), and the default settings (which are used if nothing else is specified). If none are specified, the arch is expected to support both, and the value will be probed based on the user runtime options or the input program. Only two arches today set the default value (bpf & mips). We can probably let this go as it only shows up in one scenario: the sim is invoked, but with no inputs, and no user endian selection. This means bpf will not behave like the other arches: an error is shown and forces the user to make a choice. If an input program is used though, we'll still switch the default to that. This allows us to remove the WITH_DEFAULT_TARGET_BYTE_ORDER setting. For the ports that set a "wire" endian, move it to the runtime init of the respective sim_open calls. This allows us to change the WITH_TARGET_BYTE_ORDER to purely a user-selected configure setting if they want to force a specific endianness. With all the endian logic moved to runtime selection, we can move the configure call up to the common dir so we only process it once across all ports. The ppc arch was picking the wire endian based on the target used, but since we weren't doing that for other biendian arches, we can let this go too. We'll rely on the input selecting the endian, or make the user decide.

sim: overhaul alignment settings management Currently, the sim-config module will abort if alignment settings haven't been specified by the port's configure.ac. This is a bit weird when we've allowed SIM_AC_OPTION_ALIGNMENT to seem like it's optional to use. Thus everyone invokes it. There are 4 alignment settings, but really only 2 matters: strict and nonstrict. The "mixed" setting is just the default ("unset"), and "forced" isn't used directly by anyone (it's available as a runtime option for some ports). The m4 macro has 2 args: the "wire" settings (which represents the hardwired port behavior), and the default settings (which are used if nothing else is specified). If none are specified, then the build won't work (see above as if SIM_AC_OPTION_ALIGNMENT wasn't called). If default settings are provided, then that is used, but we allow the user to override at runtime. Otherwise, the "wire" settings are used and user runtime options to change are ignored. Most ports specify a default, or set the "wire" to nonstrict. A few set "wire" to strict, but it's not clear that's necessary as it doesn't make the code behavior, by default, any different. It might make things a little faster, but we should provide the user the choice of the compromises to make: force a specific mode at compile time for faster runtime, or allow the choice at runtime. More likely it seems like an oversight when these ports were initially created, and/or copied & pasted from existing ports. With all that backstory, let's get to what this commit does. First kill off the idea of a compile-time default alignment and set it to nonstrict in the common code. For any ports that want strict alignment by default, that code is moved to sim_open while initializing the sim. That means WITH_DEFAULT_ALIGNMENT can be completely removed. Moving the default alignment to the runtime also allows removal of setting the "wire" settings at configure time. Which allows removing of all arguments to SIM_AC_OPTION_ALIGNMENT and moving that call to common code. The macro logic can be reworked to not pass WITH_ALIGNMENT as -D CPPFLAG and instead move it to config.h. All of these taken together mean we can hoist the macro up to the top level and share it among all sims so behavior is consistent among all the ports.

All flags are therefore accepted by configure, but then it breaks when actually compiling a source file with -Werror. This is equivalent to this commit in gdb: 3e019bdc20eb81b91ab5bc774386201b874c0bac gdb: Use -Werror when checking for (un)supported warning flags We then see some other compilation errors when building with clang and -Werror, they can be dealt with later.

We don't have the ability to actually run tests against them, but that's due to a limitation in gas: it doesn't support multitarget. If that ever changes, we should be able to turn on our tests too. We can improve the test framework to fallback to a system toolchain if available to help mitigate that.

Lets switch the sim-watch core for monitoring pc events to the sim_pc_get API so this module works for all ports, and then we can delete this old back channel of snooping in the port's cpu state -- the code needs the pointer to the pc storage so that it can read out bytes and compare them to the watchrange. This also fixes the logic on multi-cpu sims by removing the limitation of only being able to watch CPU0's state.

sim: watchpoints: change sizeof_pc to sizeof(sim_cia) Existing ports already have sizeof_pc set to the same size as sim_cia, so simply make that part of the core code. We already assume this in places by way of sim_pc_{get,set}, and this is how it's documented in the sim-base.h API. There is code to allow sims to pick different register word sizes from address sizes, but most ports use the defaults for both (32-bits), and the few that support multiple register sizes never change the address size (so address defaults to register). I can't think of any machine where the register hardware size would be larger than the address word size either. We have ABIs that behave that way (e.g. x32), but the hardware is still equivalent register sized.

sim/opcodes: Allow use of out of tree cgen source directory When configuring with '--enbale-cgen-maint' the default for both the opcodes/ and sim/ directories is to assume that the cgen source is within the binutils-gdb source tree as binutils-gdb/cgen/. In the old cvs days, this worked well, as cgen was just another sub-module of the single cvs repository and could easily be checked out within the binutils-gdb directory, and managed by cvs in the normal way. Now that binutils-gdb is in git, while cgen is still in cvs, placing the cgen respository within the binutils-gdb tree is more troublesome, and it would be nice if the two tools could be kept separate. Luckily there is already some initial code in the configure.ac files for both opcodes/ and sim/ to support having cgen be located outside of the binutils-gdb tree, however, this was speculative code written imagining a future where cgen would be built and installed to some location. Right now there is no install support for cgen, and so the configure code in opcodes/ and sim/ doesn't really do anything useful. In this commit I repurpose this code to allow binutils-gdb to be configured so that it can make use of a cgen source directory that is outside of the binutils-gdb tree. Bump to autoconf 2.69 and automake 1.15.1 When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see: configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation Solution 1: Adjust the code based on the example at that URL. sim: or1k: add or1k target to sim This adds the OpenRISC 32-bit sim target. The OpenRISC sim is a CGEN based sim so the bulk of the code is generated from the .cpu files by CGEN. The engine decode and execute logic in mloop uses scache with pseudo-basic-block extraction and supports both full and fast (switch) modes. The sim does not implement an mmu at the moment. Merge all the configure checks that went into cconfig.h into SIM_AC_COMMON so we can drop the cconfig.h file altogether. Now there is only a single config.h file like normal.

Punt WITH_DEVICES and the two callbacks device_io_{read,write}_buffer. We can also punt the tconfig.h file as no port is using it anymore. This fixes in-tree builds that get confused by picking up the wrong one (common/ vs <port>/) caused by commit ae7d0cac8ce971f7108d270c. Any port that needs to set up a global define can use their own sim-main.h file that they must provide regardless.

sim: rename tconfig.in to tconfig.h Rather than manually include tconfig.h when we think we'll need it (which is error prone as it can define symbols we expect from config.h), have it be included directly by config.h. Since we know we have to include that header everywhere already, this will make sure tconfig.h isn't missed. It should also be fine as tconfig.h is supposed to be simple and only set up a few core defines for the target. This allows us to stop symlinking it in place all the time and just use it straight out of the respective source directory.

sim: unify target->subdir handling for default tests The testsuite subdir has a note about unifying the target->subdir logic, so do just that. The end goal here is to have `make check` work out of the box without having to delve into dejagnu internals. The target-specific logic is split out of the top level configure.ac file and into a dedicated configure.tgt similar to other subprojects (gdb and ld and etc...) with the difference that this file has to be included at the m4 level instead of the shell level. This is necessary only because autoconf requires AC_CONFIG_SUBDIRS be given a string literal and not a variable value. Then the toplevel and the testsuite configure files pull this in, the sim subdir gets expanded into testsuite/site.exp, and the default sim run code uses this info to set the sim path to the local compiled run file if it hasn't already been specified.
